U.S.-Led Forces Formally Ending Afghanistan Combat Mission Withdrawal Leaves Afghan Forces to Battle Taliban Largely on Their Own By MARGHERITA STANCATI KABULU.S.-led forces in Afghanistan are formally ending their combat mission on Sunday, leaving Afghan forces to battle a still-resilient Taliban insurgency largely on their own.
The change in mission, which will be marked by a ceremony in Kabul on Sunday, is largely symbolic. A

US Deaths And Treasure In Vain?
Don’t know. But it’s high time we stopped pouring our borrowed billions down that rahole.
We may have lost the war, but at least we won a battle (or tied).
Today the Taliban is probably more powerful and pervasive than it was in 2001. The US squandered a huge human and material treasure. Neither the security of the US or Afghanistan was enhanced. It would be nice to say that the US has learned that interference in these alien cultures is a futile endeavor but it does not seem that the experience in Iraq and Afghanistan has taught our leaders anything.
Some nations (in fact most nations) can’t be “built.”
I doubt Taliban can ever be prevented from returning to power, excepting a permanent US presence there. Unfortunately, Pakistan seems to be the real enemy.
Simply ban any and all Pakistanis from entering the USA.
Ok well we made things worse that they were before so we will be leaving now. See ya.
Active Duty ping.
Our Troops and Spooks are protecting Taliban crops of poppy, and keeping them from breaking.
Good. Bring the rest of our men and women home, let the muzzies kill each other and their demon god can sort them out.
.... This move is not about America .... It's about the promises that the self appointed "Demigod" made at the beginning of the term of office as the President of the United States.
.... He swore that he would uphold the Constitution of the United States of America ..... this man lied.
You nailed it. He wanted to simply keep looney left-wing “campaign promises” regardless of American regional security interests.
Everytime he opens his mouth he is lying, are doing something ungodly.
I’m sure I’ll get flamed really bad for this, but we should’ve gone in, got the job done, then brought our military home.
A powerful empire invades Afghanistan to make them “behave”. And it fails?
Much like Vietnam, both Iraq and Afghanistan were attempts to bring Western cultural values of freedom and goverernance to places that did not want it. When a nation is a majority moslem, Republic ideals will not be accepted. They want a tyrant type of control as was present in the tribal cultural of Mohammed. If we havelewrned anything is that iIslam is a lie and those those that follow it will never ally themselves with the freedom loving natioins of the world. We should never provide material a isn’t in such conuntries believing that there will be a return of generosity.... There will not and therefore, only total warfare should be handed over until the enemy within is destroyed. Save the lives of our men and women , not the host population who have time and again where their alligence falls....and it has never been with the US!
True enough, nation-building is a dud when tried on a society of fanatic Muslims. (Moderates might be easier, but the shift from moderate to fanatic is dreadfully easy in the mideast.)
A token tyrant like the Shah that Jimmy Carter chased away, is maybe the best that can be hoped. He does not bother the moderates but any serious attempt to push him away is met with the iron fist. But again America may not want to sponsor such a thing. The sons of Ishmael are our problem children today.
The Constitution of Afghanistan is officially Islamic. The problem is ISLAM. Islam is inherently and incurably evil. Since the problem was not only ignored but strenuously and officially denied it was impossible to solve right from the beginning.
I was amazed to hear that the Afghan Taliban declared that the school massacre by the Pakistan Taliban was “un-Islamic. Could there be some hope there????
The Iraq distraction was really wastedyears. We should have concentrated on Afghanistan. My son was 82nd Airborne in Gulf War I. Three months before Bush II went into Iraq I asked my son how many troops we should have if we invaded, which we did in March 2003 with under 200,000. My son said 1/2 million and he was right. He also did tours in Afghanistan in 2006 and 2013, and in 2013 said we were wasting lives and money there.
Before the Soviet invasion Afghanistan was making some progress, some women were becoming educated and working at meaningful jobs. The Soviet war totally destroyed modern progress by reinforcing war like anti women tribal behavior. The Taliban stopped all education for women and made them house slaves with no right to even go outside without a male escort.
