Democrats risk loss of Boxer’s Senate seat if some don’t curb ambitions: Thomas Elias

After all, a Senate seat is a plum job anywhere, but especially for Democrats in California, where it’s been decades since any of them lost a reelection bid for statewide office. Whoever takes Boxer’s place can expect to become the state’s senior senator after 2018, when the then-85-year-old Dianne Feinstein is also widely expected to retire.

But ambitious Democrats should beware: Their eagerness, even greed, could do in their party’s hold on Boxer’s spot. It has happened before in California, and very recently.

The field of potential Democratic candidates for Boxer’s slot is large, possibly going beyond obvious prospects like Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, state Attorney General Kamala Harris, state Treasurer John Chiang, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and his predecessor Antonio Villaraigosa. Less obvious might be Silicon Valley moguls like Facebook chief executive Sheryl Sandberg and billionaire hedge fund operator Tom Steyer, of late a financial angel for liberal causes.

They have a strange system in CA. The top two vote getters in the primary battle in November. It’s possible the democrats could split their vote and two republicans could be on top.

I don’t think it will be a major problem because four major offices are likely opening in the next four years. Brown is term limited so both governor and lieutenant governor are opening in 2018. Boxer’s seat is opening in 2016 and Feinstein isn’t likely to run in 2018 when she’ll be 84. There should be opportunity enough for all of them.

It is only necessary, therefore, to recommend that full use be made of the resource; and to remark that, besides the direct benefit to be drawn from these artificial divisions, they will tend to smother the true and natural one, existing in all societies, between the few who are always impatient of political equality and the many who can never rise above it; between those who are to mount to the prerogatives and those who are to be saddled with the burdens of the hereditary government to be introduced - in one word, between the general mass of the people, attached to their republican government and republican interests, and the chosen band devoted to monarchy and Mammon. It is of infinite importance that this distinction should be kept out of sight. The success of the project absolutely requires it.

11. As soon as sufficient progress in the intended change shall have been made, and the public mind duly prepared according to the rules already laid down, it will be proper to venture on another and a bolder step toward a removal of the constitutional landmarks.

I’m afraid California is lost in terms of a Senate seat. There is an outside chance that we could find a Mark Kirk type that could squeeze through - but I seriously doubt that any real conservative can any longer win at the state level in California.

Hoping I’m wrong but doubting that I am.

Who? That's the right question. A Republican with a large enough public profile (like Arnold Schwarzenegger) could win, but where is that individual? California's GOPe doesn't like personality cults that compete with its establishment. If a famous, forty-ish Hollywood actor announced he was running for Senate as a Reagan Republican, the California GOP would go all-out to torpedo him in favor of one of "their guys."
