The Beltway is abuzz over Scott Walker.
The Wisconsin governor is the talk of Washington Republicans following his much-heralded speech in Iowa last weekend during the states first 2016 candidate cattle call.
Walkers strong showing in the Hawkeye State is reverberating back in D.C., where donors, kingmakers and lawmakers in both houses of Congress are talking about him as a top-tier candidate in the crowded GOP field.
He should feel pretty good about this past weekend, said Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), who organized the Iowa Freedom Summit. So far, this week has been pretty good for Scott Walker. The governor has been making moves toward a White House run, hiring some top GOP staffers and launching a new fundraising organization on Tuesday. Hell be in Washington on Friday to deliver a high-profile speech to a leading conservative organization, his first public speech in D.C. since his 2014 reelection win.
Walker has long drawn praise from disparate parts of his party, though questions have lingered about his charisma.
Hard-line conservatives love his high-profile battles with Wisconsins unions and successful push for legislation on a number of their priorities, including lower taxes, tightened restrictions on abortions and loosened ones on guns.
He seems like a great guy, and he gave a tremendous speech, said Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), a leading Tea Party conservative who also spoke at the Iowa confab.
Establishment-leaning Republicans love that hes shown how to govern and win three elections in four years in a state that usually leans Democratic.
Hes got a great record in Wisconsin, and I think hes great, said Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), a member of Senate GOP leadership.

“Watch for the long knives to come out very soon, especially from the Left.”
The left is going to throw everything at the wall to see what sticks, BUT after our HORRIFIC secret ‘John Doe’ investigation of him, and winning THREE elections in 4 years, I would be GREATLY surprised if they can find anything on him at all.
Believe me, they have tried...and on a National level! He is who he appears to be, warts and all. :)
He’s been taking classes. I’m pretty sure he’ll have his degree when push comes to shove. :)
I have a feeling...This thing is going to turn for Scott Walker.
I have never actively campaigned for anyone. I can’t wait to knock on doors and make calls for this guy!
And, yeah, I don't like Walker's squishy statements on immigration either. But it still beats the hell out of being a full fledged invader subsidizer like BO or an invader enabler like Jeb Bush.
Please see my post #24.
Walker caved and gave in when the Courts allowed queers to marry in Wisconsin.
That is a deal breaker.
Persona Non Grata.
Given his proven conservative record and the fact that the Unions and Democrats hate him, he is fine with me. Don’t know about Cruz. He has no record, just speeches.
Sarah yes. Cruz no. Cruz is the best of the best of the best in this party. It’s really not even close. Whether he’s the best candidate has yet to be seen. He is a much more articulate person than Walker or anyone else in the field. Walker needs to earn this and prove he can win. I don’t want a coronation, whether it’s on the establishment side or base voters. Any of these guys need to earn their place and show they can run a crafty and viable general election campaign.
Frankly, I think the GOP-E of 2015 is vastly more corrupt, more liberal, and more degenerate than the GOP-E of 1980.
Any candidate that the GOP-E seems comfortable with is a candidate I immediately distrust.
Walker with Hannity...
Besides that, the issue of not having a DC voting track record is not something that usually works out well for us.
I'm thinking that if it has to be a gov who doesn't have a DC voting record, Jindal might be a better choice. And that Indian ethnic vote could be really useful in close states.
I can vote for Walker. My fear is that IF he wins the nomination he will pick an establishment RINO as his Veep. Think Ronald Reagan in 1980. What a nightmare fort America that turned out to be.
There is a valid argument for that. There is an even more valid argument for conservatives needing at least tepid cooperation (or at least not overwhelming opposition) from the GOPe to elect one of our own.
just out of curiosity, do we think that Walker could actually win Wisconsin?
I find that hard to believe. Yes, he won statewide 3 times. But I’m not sure he would win in a presidential race. But who knows the answer to that question? Curious to hear some opinion.....
See, you ARE a tolerant guy!
No degree should be a plus given that a Yale gentleman's C gave us G. W. Bush and John Kerry; being a Rhodes scholar, Clinton; affirmative action at Harvard and Princeton, both Obamas; and, sadly Annapolis - Carter and McCain.
Hopefully chained to the other half
Walker does have a record of cleaning up a mess. Whoever wins will inherit a real mess. We aren’t electing a chief debater or speech-maker. Walker just needs to get right on immigration.
My hope is that either Walker or Cruz takes out the other and Paul fairly early, then appropriates a few of Paul’s less looney themes into his own campaign. I think either of them can make Santorum/Carson/Huckster irrelevant. Conservatives are going to have to unite to beat the GOPe.
He’s got a PhD from the University of Hard Knocks.
same here, so long as Walker is also conservative on social issues too unlike Rand paul and the liberaltarians and RINOs we have
