MONESSEN, Pa —At least five students at a Westmoreland County middle school were given word puzzles based on the erotic novel and movie "Fifty Shades of Grey" this week, and school district officials said they are investigating how it happened.

James Carter said the word search, filled with explicit sexual terms, was passed out Monday to his son and other students in his eighth-grade class at Monessen Middle School.

"I asked my son who passed it out, and he said the teacher passed it out," Carter told said. "I don't think this is what they should be doing in the eighth-grade level."

Carter said he went to the school Tuesday afternoon but administrators wouldn't answer his questions about the word search.

At a school board meeting Tuesday night, Monessen City School District officials said they could not comment on who gave the puzzles to students, citing personnel issues.

"We just learned of this issue yesterday," solicitor John Toohey said. "An investigation will occur."

Board member Roberta Bergstedt, who was not at the meeting, said in an email that the puzzles were passed out by mistake.

School district officials would not comment on whether any teachers or staff have been disciplined.

My daughter lives in Monessen about 2 blocks from this school. Monessen is a old run down steel mill town. This "puzzle" is all the buzz in town and the folks do not like it.

Based on the amount of hype coming from Hollywood about “Fifty Shades of Grey” — I just heard a commercial for Vermont Teddy Bears advertising a FSG bear gift for Valentines Day(!) — the movie must be a real turkey. It sounds to me that this will be a flop at the box office as soon as it hits theaters. We shall see. The stupidity of the American public for hype is legendary.

By mistake? I highly doubt it. The teacher knows exactly what she passes out.

If a teacher passes out something like that "by mistake" that is so out of place in the classroom, she should be fired because she is a mindless idiot and should not be teaching. Period.

Someone should publish the name of the teacher who passed out the puzzle...and let the chips fall where they may.

You got that right. The same old Rat local politicians get voted in over & over and are corrupt. The tax collector was busted for taking parking meter quarters. When he was popped his pants pockets were full of quarters. The code enforcement officer had a borough gas card for his city issued vehicle. They have him on film filling up has family's cars all waiting in line at the gas station. The Amish sections are getting worse with shootings and drugs.

“she should be fired because she is a mindless idiot and should not be teaching. “

Isn’t an assumption of gender being made here?

yikes,I clicked on that link. I will confess, despite the term being self explanatory (I guess), I have no idea of the “why” of a b___ plug.

Me neither. Perhaps we should ask the Vice President what a butt plug is used for.

Not a huge number of guys have read FSG. The overwhelming majority are women. So...looks like an assumption based on short odds.

If it has to be censored on the evening news, then why would you think it was acceptable to give to middle school students?

"the movie must be a real turkey. It sounds to me that this will be flop at the box office"

Supposedly it is doing well in advanced ticket sales-But I think it won't do well after the first week. While some people might like reading about S & M stuff, it is not so "fun" to actually see on the big screen IMO. (There was a movie made back in the 80's called 9 1/2 Weeks about this same subject matter. As I recall- It didn't do that well at the box office, in spite of all the hype before it's release.)

As for the "teacher" who gave the puzzle to eighth graders- Fire the perv- No excuses.
