McDonald's Latest Sales Are Worse Than Expected
Forbes ^ | 9 March 15 | Staff

Posted on 03/09/2015 4:13:51 PM PDT by SkyPilot

McDonald's MCD +0.6% worldwide sales fell a more than expected 1.7% in February, marking nine consecutive months of declines.

This comes a week after new CEO Steve Easterbrook assumed the top job. Easterbrook, who has said he considers himself an ‘internal activist,’ is faced with reviving the lagging sales that cost previous CEO Don Thompson his job.

U.S. sales fell 4%, as the fast food giant continues to face heavy competition from fast casual chains like Chipotle and Panera.

“Consumer needs and preferences have changed,” said the company in a statement. “McDonald’s current performance reflects the urgent need to evolve with today’s consumers, reset strategic priorities and restore business momentum.”

Last week, McDonald’s announced it would start to phase out the use of chickens that are raised with human antibiotics.

Sales in Asia, where the company is still being punished by customers following a food safety scandal last year, declined by 4.4%. “Rebuilding brand trust by strengthening McDonald’s quality and value perceptions is one of APMEA’s top priorities for 2015,” the company said.

Total sales were partially offset by a 0.7% gain in Europe sales, where the company saw strength in the U.K. and Germany but still faces headwinds in Russia.

The 1.7% worldwide sales decline reported by McDonald’s was much worse than estimates of a 0.3% decline, according to analysts polled by research firm Consensus Metrix, and is telling of how much work the company has left to do under Easterbrook. Last month the company reported a 1.8% decline.

Shares of McDonald’s declined 1% to $96.14 in premarket trading and are up 5% over the last 12 months.

That’s why they are failing. No one goes to a burger joint to get a salad.

Olive Garden and Red Lobster recently tried these "new menu items." Salads. Healthy Wraps. Stuff like that.

Total failure.

No one goes to Red Lobster for a bean curd wrap.

You do know why they didn’t mention the black ad push / white flight - which I didn’t even mention because I was not sure of that.

It’s not politically correct to notice and report that. Those liberal rags won’t mention anything real that’s politically incorrect to most of their readers.

Once again, you post derogatory comments about McD applicable to your neighborhood, not mine.

You need to open your eyes, into the real world.

WHAT? You don’t go to BLAKES LOTTABURGER?

I used to like GEORGE AND JOHNS in Farmington NM, till McDonalds came to town and stole all their business. George and John’s burgers were great!

When I am in NM, I eat at Blakes.

In other words, people are promoted to their level of incompetence.

Of course comparing any $5.50 item to any $1.00 item is going to need to take value into account.

True.

I remember when I was in college waaaay back, we determined the most food we could get for our scrounged singles, quarters, and dimes was Jack in the Box and Taco Bell.

Not great food, but when the bars had closed, it was pretty good for throwing down some nickels and dimes.

> “It’s not the cheapest fastest place to eat anymore.” <

Who is cheaper? What I want from a fastfood restaurant is fast cheap food. I’m pleased that McDonald’s still offers items for a dollar each. Let people who want and can afford high-quality food go somewhere else. In the last couple of months I used the drive-through several times to order two McChickens and a Grilled Onion Chedder Burger for $3.21, including tax. (At the same site where they offered those tiny 15-cent burgers about half a century ago.) I took my meal home and consumed it with a beverage of my choice, and was full and satisfied.

You folks who don’t like McDonald’s, tell me where I can get three items (with meat in them) for about three dollars — and fast. Sure, there’s better food elsewhere, but some of us who are retired on very little money, and who are relatively easy to please when it comes to food, want cheap food that we can get without waiting. I don’t like seeing people rooting for a source of such food to go out of business.

[I don’t eat out much myself — and wouldn’t recommend that meal often for health’s sake — but it’s good to know that McDonald’s is still selling items for a dollar each.]

“For years their advertisements seem to have been aimed at minorities.”

I noticed that to, and I figured that someone was kissing up to the black CEO, who has been fired.

I’m not rooting for McDonald’s to go under. They just aren’t so cheap relative to their competitors anymore. When times were good they got expensive and now that the economy has been beaten down, McDonald’s prices are the same. Ok so they have some dollar value items. Great. There’s still cheaper places to eat. McDonald’s just isn’t at the price point they used to be. so some families have to cut back on that expenditure.

I remember quite well the first McDonald’s I ever saw. It was in Ft. Walton Beach around 1962. They had no place to eat inside and only a few concrete tables outside.

The burgers were not tiny. They weren’t large either. They were 15 cents.

The one thing which surprised me was “they were good” I repeat: They were good. The fries were better than good.

The real difference is they tasted good. They no longer do.

I eat at McDonalds (usually just drive through) when I’m traveling and don’t want to get off the highway. The only other time I get their stuff is during Lent, because their filet of fish sandwich is better than that of the other fast food joints.

That said, I think when they started to get downwardly mobile and direct their ads and their image to the “Mickey D” crowd and white college student wimps looking for loose change under their sofa cushions, they drove away a lot of people who had previously just thought of it as a nice safe no-hassle place to eat in a hurry.
