Bells will ring across the country and in Lynchburg on Thursday to mark the 150th anniversary of Gen. Robert E. Lees surrender to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in Appomattox, the symbolic end of four years of bloodshed.
A historic bell will be rung at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park at 3 p.m., the time the surrender occurred. People at historic sites, schools, parks, government buildings and within communities throughout Lynchburg and the country will join in at 3:15 p.m., ringing bells for four continuous minutes, representing the four years of fighting.

It’s just a long time-out.
It's hard to understand the slave comparison since you are free to leave at any time.
Come now everyone knows it was not a Civil War - it was “The War between the States.” it was fought over States Rights not a centralized big government.
“It’s hard to understand the slave comparison since you are free to leave at any time.”
The best slave is the slave who thinks he’s free.
And those who think they are slaves? What are they?
“And those who think they are slaves? What are they?”
Why don’t you enlighten us all about it. :-)
Of course, Southerners thought they were free leave back in 1861.
Pretty ironic, isn’t it.
I would have to defer to you on that one.
Yeah, especially when you consider their secession being motivated by protecting their right to keep slaves and all.
Yeah, but that’s the part that we all know and is so obvious. I’m simply pointing out the irony in what you said, as it has only become self evident in recent years.
Ironic too that, those who fought for the union because they wanted to free slaves, had no qualms about denying Southerners their freedom to secede and freedom to form a new country...essentially enslaving them to the north’s will.
Probably shouldn’t attacked Sumter if you wanted to be left alone.
Yeh I figured. LOL!
I totally agree. It was a stupid thing to do as it gave Lincoln the excuse he needed to start the war. (Yeah, I know. Depends on which side of the fence you are on.) But the bigger point is, without Sumter, the whole thing would have had to play out in the courts first. Maybe there still would have been a war, maybe not.
I find this to be the most interesting aspect of the whole episode. Most people do not understand that the issue of secession has NOT been settled...only the issue of unilateral secession. It’s also why I engage and follow these debates. The are very educational at many levels.
And I missed it?
I guess I'll just have to wait for the next one.
After that it could be that there would have been forces that would have stepped in and said "no secession". Then there would be no doubt that it would have been unification via aggression. As it stands now, the war was a response to an attack, as almost all of ours wars have been.
