What are we going to do once all the water is gone? Thanks to the worst drought in more than 1,000 years, the western third of the country is facing the greatest water crisis that the United States has ever seen. Lake Mead is now the lowest that it has ever been since the Hoover Dam was finished in the 1930s, mandatory water restrictions have already been implemented in the state of California, and there are already widespread reports of people stealing water in some of the worst hit areas. But this is just the beginning. Right now, in a desperate attempt to maintain somewhat “normal” levels of activity, water is being pumped out of the ground in the western half of the nation at an absolutely staggering pace. Once that irreplaceable groundwater is gone, that is when the real crisis will begin. If this multi-year drought stretches on and becomes the “megadrought” that a lot of scientists are now warning about, life as we know it in much of the country is going to be fundamentally transformed and millions of Americans may be forced to find somewhere else to live.
Simply put, this is not a normal drought. What the western half of the nation is experiencing right now is highly unusual. In fact, scientists tell us that California has not seen anything quite like this in at least 1,200 years…

Now it may be the worst drought California’s seen in that length of time but I suspect not since California’s plant life is adapted to drought conditions. Besides, no one’s been around measuring rainfall in all that time and tree rings will only tell you so much - only about the immediate vicinity of the tree they come from.

I live in eastern Washington near the Tri Cities. It is a low elevation desert bewteen 350 and 600 feet above sea level, with an average annual rainfall around 7 inches. The only reason the Columbia Basin has any water for irrigation is from the government construction projects to provide it.
So when we hear its a low water year or drought that means the snow pack in the mountains is low and less water diverted to the irrigation projectss.

I live in California our water problems are not from the drought it self it is from years of mismanaging our water resources her in California. the democratic party is more concerned with high speed rail in the central valley then it is with solving our water problems. where I live the water problems would be over if they would just stop divert the water they our sending into the San Francisco bay.

Understood, and I was not directing my comment at folks such as yourself. I lived in Cali when I was a kid (Santa Ana, Los Angeles, Lancaster) and recall the Aqueduct being constructed. That monstrosity is the single most tangible reason why Cali is facing a drought. The huge influx of illegals is another significant part. Brown has F'd up that beautiful state in numerous ways, but he is not the only one.
You are absolutely correct about so-called 'environmentalists' as they have done more than their fair share to destroy the state as well. Odd how these environmentalists are staunchly liberal in their social views yet so conservative with respect to the environment. Hypocrisy or cognitive dissonance???
I generally have tried to temper my comments, keeping in mind that even in the bluest states, there are solid conservatives who deserve our support, help, and even compassion. I made a point of not even joking about “The Big One” that will cause the land of fruit and nuts to fall into the ocean.

They should be more concerned, no, in an absolute panic, about the worldwide crisis of an AIR shortage!!!
Sure, people have been breathing air for years, even decades, but today, so many people are taking deep breaths, far more than their fair share, that soon we will reach PEAK AIR, and there won’t be any air left for people to breathe.
The only solution is a one world government run from the UN, paid for with international taxes for breathing, paid for by the modern industrial western nations, who breathe more than anyone else.
The cause of this is not due to a draught! It is due to years of environazi practices of standing in the way of water storage.

I was born in California and have lived here all of my life. I remember the drought of 1976. I remember putting a brick in the toilet tank. The water reservoir levels were as low or lower than they are now. The population of California was lower then than now. Who invited millions of illegals to move into California? I am trying to remember who was governor of California in 1976. Does anybody out there remember who was governor of California in 1976? Why isn’t Arizona suffering from this drought like California is? Hmmmm?

Die. If you are dumb enough not to use an existing technology to extract clean water from what covers 75% of the earth, then you do not deserve to live.
We built the Alaska pipeline 40 years ago. Take a hint. Build a national pipeline network, desalinate water and send it inland.
