The decline of Rand Paul
washingtonpost.com ^ | May 26, 2015 | Dana Milbank

Rand Paul took a left turn on his journey to the Republican nomination, and now his hopes now seem to be headed south.

The libertarian senator from Kentucky’s new book, “Taking a Stand,” came out Tuesday, and it is chock full of lines that would position Paul well — if he were running against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

On the environment: “You’ll find I’m a tree hugger, literally…I’m a Republican who wants clean air, clean water, and the life-extending miracle of electricity. I compost.”

Rand Paul On Shutdown: "Even Though It Appeared I Was Participating In It, It Was A Dumb Idea"
I said throughout the whole battle that shutting down the government was a dumb idea. Even though it did appear as if I was participating in it, I said it was a dumb idea. And the reason I voted for it, though, is that it's a conundrum. Here's the conundrum. We have a $17 trillion debt and people at home tell me you can't give the president a blank check. We just can't keep raising the debt ceiling without conditions. So unconditionally raising the debt ceiling, nobody at home wants me to vote for that and I can't vote for that. But the conundrum is if I don't we do approach these deadlines. So there is an impasse. In 2011, though, we had this impasse and the president did negotiate. We got the sequester. If we were to extend the sequester from discretionary spending to all the entitlements we would actually fix our problem within a few years.

Rand Paul: Time for GOP to soften war stance
...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.

Rand Paul's immigration speech
...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.

Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.

Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.

Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.

If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...

This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.

Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.

Rand Paul calls on conservatives to embrace immigration reform
Latinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but "Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration." ...he would create a bipartisan panel to determine how many visas should be granted for workers already in the United States and those who might follow... [and the buried lead] "Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers...

Rand Slams Congress for Funding Egypt's Generals: 'How Does Your Conscience Feel Now?'
Sen. Rand Paul is hammering his fellow senators for keeping billions in financial aid flowing to Egypt's military -- even as Cairo's security forces massacre anti-government activists. [by "anti-government activists" is meant church-burning Christian-murdering jihadists]

Try to make sense if you can. Why would Paul plagiarize something he didn’t believe?

He has a long history of plagiarism. First you've heard of it?

The only thing that Paul is right on is foreign policy.

Not one more drop of blood or one more cent in nation building. Another war is existential to us.

Of course he isn’t responsible for them. But he shares far too many of them to be considered remotely conservative. And he expresses them all on his own.

Close — Paul isn’t right on anything. He’s a demagogic and a Democrat-in-all-but-name.

I would ask you to put your finger on the part of the Constitution where it says that the Federal government can tell you what vegetables you can grow, carry, or smoke.

If individual states want to outlaw drugs, that's a different issue. They can write their Constitutions to allow it, but the US Constitution has something called "The Bill of Rights" and the last article of it, Amendment X says, "if you don't see a power enumerated here, the Feds don't have it."

Also try justifying the legality of depriving an accused person of his liberty or property without due process -- which is exactly what "asset forfeiture laws" do.

Oh, wait, you won't be able to find that, because the Constitution specifically OUTLAWS it in both the aforementioned Bill of Rights and Amendment XIV.

Has the Patriot Act really made us safer? That's a debate we should have. Generally, most pols are very long on scaremongering, and very, very short on justification.

Paul is not my guy. But I'm struggling hard to find much difference between his "liberal" tendencies and those of, say, Mike Huckabee or most of the Republicans in the Senate and about half of the people in the House.

So, your "argument" is ad hominem. Here's the bad news: that's not actually an argument at all. It's a fallacy.

Not surprising that you don't know that, since you're claiming he would steal and then articulate positions which he doesn't actually support. Logic much?

Again, I am going to repeat my question, in the off chance that you'll actually read it and respond to it. There are three quotes in my OP from Paul. They are the first three pull-quotes from the article. With which of them do you disagree?

Off the shelf? None of them. There are probably quotes from Hitler, Stalin, Napoleon or LBJ that you’d agree with. Does that mean they’d be good GOP nominees, were they alive today?

Even Paul followers cannot justify his positions, although some have tried using the same old crap....” What he meant to say...”. Its over for Paul, he knows it as do his followers.

Their main goal now is to keep Cruz or Rubio from getting the nomination.

None of those quotes are outside of the Republican mainstream. Dana Milbank is a Communist/Democrat operative trying to fool Republican primary voters into thinking they are, though. Some Republicans will be stupid enough to fall for it.

Rand Paul is consistent.

“Rand Paul to steer clear of Mississippi runoff”

“Rand Paul: It’s a ‘misnomer’ to say McConnell isn’t conservative”

“Rand Paul To Campaign for Romney”

March, 2013—”Rand Paul endorses Mitch McConnell in 2014 Senate race, won’t back tea party challenge”

“A week after about 150 tea party activists rallied in opposition to U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander’s re-election” “Rand Paul of Kentucky said here Monday that he hopes Alexander doesn’t get an opponent and wins re-election.”

Rand Paul isn’t running for state office, he is running for federal office.

His pro-choice, pro-gay, pro-drug, anti-conservative views make him unsuitable for federal office.

The GOP as a national party does not need to “evolve” on fundamental conservative issues.
