McConnell and Reid may have just set a 51-vote threshold for passing Obamacare repeal
Washington Examiner ^ | July 24, 2015 | Timothy P. Carney

Posted on 07/24/2015 11:17:28 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Next week, Senate Republicans could pass Obamacare repeal with a simple 51-vote majority as part of the long-term highway bill, according to Sen. Mike Lee.

The Utah Republican laid out the argument in a press release after party leaders set the sequencing of votes:

"The first Obamacare vote on Sunday will have a 60 vote threshold, and Democrats will likely block it," Lee continued. "But thanks to the sequencing of the votes we just locked in, Republicans will have the opportunity resurrect that Obamacare amendment later on in the process, and put it back before the Senate in a manner that only requires a simple-majority vote."

After cloture is reached on the Export-Import Bank amendment, senators will still be allowed to offer germane amendments to the highway bill, each of which would only require a simple-majority to pass. If the Chair rules that the Obamacare amendment is non-germane, Senate Rule 22 also allows any senator to appeal that ruling to the full Senate. At that point, a simple-majority of Senators would have the power to add the Obamacare repeal amendment to the highway bill.

If Lee is correct, then Democrats, in order to save Obamacare, would need to kill the highway bill — and thus their effort to restart the expired Export-Import Bank. (Unless, of course, Republicans bail Democrats out and sink the repeal efforts.)

I agree. And if Trump falls off the bandwagon, I may or may not hop off using his head as a step down to help him back up.

Put their records side by side and youl find that it is truth.

Compare romneys record as gov with Barry’s record as senator. Apples to apples. Because we have to judge what mit WOULD have done. And they are mirror images.

I don’t trust McConnell or any gop leadership.

I think McConnell and other gop leaders are just playing to the media and trying to make themselves look like they are doing something.

Think what Cruz said just this week about McConnell lying and also this from Cruzs book.

Cruz on leadership corruption and sellout......

That Tuesday lunch began with our leadership saying, “We’re asking every Republican senator here, to affirmatively consent to lower the threshold for Harry Reid to take up the debt ceiling, from 60 votes to 50 votes. And we were told, everyone of you should agree for two reasons.

Number one, if we do this, it will happen, and hallelujah, hallelujah, that’s what we want. We want trillions more in debt with no spending reforms, because we’re scared of this issue. We don’t want to have a political fight on this.

But number two, if we do this, the Democrats will have the votes to do it on their own, which means all of us Republicans can vote no. And we can go home and tell our constituents, we opposed the thing we just consented to allow happen.

Now, I was sitting there — to be honest, I hadn’t gone to lunch intending to pick a fight, but as I listened to that, I was astonished and I raised my hand, and I said, “There’s no universe in which I can consent to doing that. I spent two years campaigning across Texas, telling Texas, if you elect me, I’ll fight with every breath in my body to stop the out of control spending and debt that are bankrupting our kids and grandkids.”

If were to do that, I think it would be both dishonest and unfaithful to the men and women who elected me.

Obama did nothing as senator.

Norm, you’ve got more sense than this. Come on...

Obama is more Conservative than Romney?

You’re marginalizing yourself with that idea.

If you truly believe this, then you think that Romney would have done everything Obama has and even more worse things.

Now, a good chunk of Trump’s voters are also Reagan Democrats, and there’s no evidence that Cruz will be able to reel those voters in for himself.

You’re kidding right? Have you heard Cruz speak.
He sounds better than Reagan at this point. It obviously had to happen but he has violated Reagan’s 11th commandment. It’s resonating with all Americans that hear him, just like Trump’s message.

I believe Cruz will draw more Blue Dog Dems to his campaign.

So far no polls suggest he’s had any such success with that demographic.

Norm, your position is that you thought going into an Obama second term, you thought Obama was closer to the Conservative ideal than Mitt Romney.

I’ve been careless in my reference to Romney as if he was a Conservative in our discussion, because he is not a Conservative. The idea he is less close to it than Obama is IMO borderline crazy talk?

It wouldn’t matter if you were the only guy on the forum that thought so if you were right, but I don’t see how you could be, and I don’t think anyone here would come to the same conclusion.

You expected Romney to be worse at:

Race baiting
Pushing the homosexual, transexual, and cross dressing agenda
Championing Islam in the U. S.
Using Executive orders to legalize illegal immigrants
Pushing IRS abuses of Conservatives
Destroy our military capabilities
Appoint die-hard unqualified anti-U. S. leftists to high level departments and political appointments
Drive off our allied nations
Display weakness to our enemies
Supply weapons to terrorists
Have members of a terrorist organization advise him inside the White House
Do his best to declare Islamic Holidays and destroy Christian ones
Partner with the most extreme leftists on planet earth
Seek to destroy Christian churches in our nation
Immigrate over 100,000 Syrians into the U. S. knowing their teachings about the U. S.
Abandon Israel and worse
Surrender Iraq to ISIS
Help ISIS get started
Facilitate Iran getting nuclear weapons
Sign an agreement that said the U. S. would defend Iran’s nuclear program against attack

I could go on, and others will.

Norm, it took you months to miss by this much?

Let me see if I can find them, but I saw polls of all voters from several states that showed Cruz second behind Jeb. This was before Trump started his destruction of the media.

Also keep in mind, Trump, and Cruz have been meeting for months. It’s no accident that their names keep coming up together.
I believe they are pulling a rope a dope on the media.

I don’t think they’re working together, I think they just both know they share a good chunk of the same voters.

Of course, there’s still a 67 vote threshold for overriding the inevitable veto.

I’m sure our gov. knows, as well as the Russians and Chinese.

They aren’t going to reveal the truth because O is the best thing that happened to both countries in history, and they love the USA being both diminished on the world stage and internally destroyed here.

In fact, he may be their “Manchurian Candidate”.

The veto will also flush ExIm. He can have one, but not the other.

Obama has already prevailed on the attaching provisions game. He just treats it as shutting down the government, in this case highways.

This is a pointless exercise in McConnell/Paul grandstanding.

Plus I may have been too optimistic in my reading of the vote schedule. McConnell may push through ExIm on a prior issue.
