LOS ANGELES — Four California schools will be forced to change mascots after Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation barring public schools from using the "Redskins" name for sports teams.
It was one of three sports-related bills Brown approved Sunday. He also signed a measure that bans using or possessing smokeless tobacco on the playing field at professional baseball parks and another that recognizes competitive cheerleading as a high school sport.
The mascot legislation will prevent public schools from using a term that American Indians regard as offensive. It goes into effect in 2017.
Only four schools still use the name. Messages seeking comment from school officials were not immediately returned Monday, a federal holiday.

Los Angeles must be renamed. There can be no government religion and proclaiming a city to be the angels is religious influence over the whole city and county.
The same is true for San Diego that is named for a Catholic idol.
Then there is Cucamonga that is just a mistake in naming anything

Instead of the insulting Redskins, can we call a team The Foreskins?
The governor needs to change his last name.
Calling himself “Brown” is very offensive to our brown skinned, uninvited guests from south of the border.
Who has actually determined that American indians are offended by that term? And how have they determined that?

Thankfully, this change won’t affect my team, the Pasadena Palefaces.
