How Donald Trump Courted the Right Wing Fringe
PoliticalWire.com ^ | 11/27/2015 | Taegan Goddard

McKay Coppins: “Trump’s dominance in this year’s presidential primary race has often been described as a mysterious natural phenomenon: the Donald riding a wild, unpredictable tsunami of conservative populist anger that just now happens to be crashing down on the Republican establishment. But in fact, Trump spent years methodically building and buying support for himself in a vast, right-wing counter-establishment — one that exists entirely outside the old party infrastructure and is quickly becoming just as powerful.”

“These forces have asserted themselves repeatedly in the fight over the future of the Republican Party. But Trump came to understand their power earlier than most. When no one was watching, he was assuming command of this Fringe Establishment, building an army of activists and avatars that he would eventually deploy in his scorched-earth assault on the GOP’s old guard, on his rivals in the primary field — and, as an early test case in the winter of 2014, on me.”

Why do people keep describing me as right wing fringe? I’m finding it offensive!

Fringe establishment...

That group was the bedrock of the party. It wasn’t the fringe.

We can’t help it if the party “fringed” itself, and that’s exactly what it did.

Trump didn’t set up this big plot to appeal to the fringe of anything.

He went to the bedrock of Reaganism. And guess what, all those of who have been trying to tell the Republican party it had it’s head firmly implanted, were right!!!!

The party marginalized itself out of existence trying to wind over Democrats with Democrats stances.

One again GOPe, what nut-case Leftist is going to buy into Leftism (slightly more right), when they can have the real thing for the same vote?

Fringe. Yeah, let’s talk fringe, a party that is supposed to be right of Obama, and only forces him to use his veto five times in seven years.

Don’t give me that they weren’t in control carp either. In nearly two years they have force his hand about once in every 110 days.

Good point, but I never saw Ward and June Cleaver in church; I do recall their “sending” the boys to Sunday school on an episode or two. And I saw ever episode I suppsoe over time. Remember, June always said “I suppose”.

We gave you your chance four years ago with Mitt Romney, who was the polar opposite of Donald Trump. He ended up getting shellacked, proving the adage that nice guys finish last.

The Democrats play for keeps. We could have nominated one of our "nice younger candidates" as you point out, but Clinton would have run them over like a freight train. Shrillary Clinton is a nasty, vile, scheming Marxist who if elected, will make us pine for the days of Obama. If we are going to beat this old shrew in November, we are going to have to get down and dirty. Another polished nice guy like Mitt Romney, Jebbie Bush or Marco Rubio is not going to cut it this year.

I love how these clowns use the word fringe to describe every group they disagree with. Trump has the support of more working class democrats then any other republican since Reagan. Conservatives aren’t the only ones who are tired of being sold out in favor of illegals or some other special interest group. Trump’s support comes from a wide variety of people.

Church doesn’t make you a Christian. But your observation is quite interesting. The strong cultural Christianity of that time probably made it an understood fact.

No one ever saw a toilet on a TV show until All In The Family. But we assumed that they all pooped.

I can’t stand Trump because he has brought an unprecedented level of crudeness, nastiness, old man’s bile and anti-intellectualism to this campaign - one in which we actually started out with some good younger candidates.

I don't disagree. I am also fearful that this was inevitable (and really started in presidential races with Clinton, with roots in the '60s counter-culture that has now become our modern anti-culture).

If you are a Carlist in Spain and the Anarchists and Communists are destroying your country, Franco starts looking pretty good even if he isn't your first choice.

There has been a long brewing need to purge the Republican Party of its plutocrats, and bring in a lot of decent folks who have bought into the Democrat Party on the vapors of past generations.

Our bigger fight is for the culture itself, but the political fight is part of that, too.

Ironically "Leave It To Beaver" was the TV show that first showed a toilet on TV. There was quite the battle with the censors at the time but since the toilet was an integral part of the plot (Wally and Beaver hid a pet alligator in the toilet tank), the censors ultimately allowed it. But in Elvis Presley style, they only allowed the toilet to be shown from the tank up. Just like Elvis' pelvis, the bowl itself was still verboten on TV.

strong conservatives follow Cruz almost exclusively.

Trump's support is NOT from the very conservative part of the Republican Party. . . . The very conservative portion of the Republican Party is trending Cruz. . . .

That would include me. I do not trust the RINO noncon Trump to think, talk, act, or govern as a social and constitutional conservative.

Trump has a pretty high % for us to be called just a “fringe”.

The rest of the field would wish for Trump’s numbers!

Fox News is hate speech aimed at Trump.

Fox has lied non stop that Trump made up all about Muzzies cheering in New Jersey, but WAPO and New Jersey papers ran stories 14 years ago saying just what Trump said and hundreds of people witnesses back up Trump

Fox News show with 4 women and a male this morning are serving up a big lie Crap Sandwich that Trump insulted a cripple.

Already disproven , hope they keep pushing this Trump will sue them. Read Trump’s statement. The reporter did the Wapo story about 14 years ago.

I guess we should all know a person’s race, religion or if they can walk or see by reading their stories.

Fox News stop shilling for the GOPee.

Stop killing our front runner. Trump will cream Hillary uniting the old Reagan Democrats, veterans, and win a landslide.
