When Donald Trump could not answer Hugh Hewittss question on the nuclear triad during the fifth GOP debate Tuesday night, Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) was kind enough to take the time to explain what the nuclear triad was to him and any other Americans who may not have known.
Trump was asked to offer his opinion on which leg of the nuclear triad, decried by many as outdated, he believed was most crucial to update. The Republican frontrunner did not appear to understand the topic.
In his original answer, Trump said it was important to have a strong leader with sound judgment during perilous times. He then trailed off to talking about opposing the Iraq War and how important limiting nuclear proliferation is. The response did not touch on Hewitt's question, so he asked again.
"I think for me nuclear â the power, the devastation is very important to me," Trump said in his second attempt.

I first heard of the Nuclear Triad just after the Cuban Missile Crises, I was twelve.
Fifteen years later, I was a keyturner for one leg of that triad and played various roles in the operation of that triad for the rest of my career.
Over the last 20 years, not so many people know the term and that it was tied to the more commonly known term, nuclear deterrence.
I seriously doubt that the Rube knows much more of the specifics than just the term that is related to nuclear deterrence.
The strength of current version of that triad is fading quickly thanks to Clinton, Bush, and the muslim dictator while the Russians are rebuilding their version.

That was my thought at the time. The way they went to Rubio and the way he answered smelled fishy. I thought Trump handled it well by saying nuclear weapons were important to him.
Without having a clearance to know what is really going on in the strategic forces, one can’t say much more about it in sixty seconds. And what one would say about it would come under the “Generals shouldn’t be talking on TV” rubric.
I’m sure Trump is familiar with missiles subs and planes and that all three can carry bombs... It was a stupid question.
It’s an outdated term because it’s not limited to three anymore.
I bet you got some stories....
Yes. You and Rubio are so much smarter than everyone else.
And Rubio’s gay lisp makes him extra-extra superior.
It also was a great question...
Can't wait to see the posted excuses...
That being said most Americans would not know what the nuclear triad is either ...
But, most Americans are not running for POTUS...
Yes. It’s not a fault to not be an absolute expert with a wiki like encyclopedic brain about everything. Unreasonable and stupid expectation.
Trump had to explain corporate inversion to other candidates when they asked what it was. Knowing what that is and how to fix it is higher on my list than the nuclear triad.
What is interesting is Hugh Hewitt asked the question, and he told Trump one of the times when he interviewed him on the radio he was going to ask the question. Hewitt told all of the candidates he was going to ask the question.
Hewitt raised it on the basis of the age of the Ohio class submarines, and his being from Ohio, usually after talking Ohio State or Cleveland Browns football.
I am not a Trump supporter and do not hate or dislike him I just don’t think he is the best man for the job, but that question was an obvious set up and sending the question again to Rubio was planned, whether Rubio was in on the set up is I think a legitimate question, it was a plan all to perfectly executed.
CRUZ 2016!
Did Hewitt us the exact term?
No, it was a policy question on updating the US military, not a “gotcha”.
Someone should ask Rubio a question to expose his lack of financial background. Presidents and Senators are routinely destroying our economy with their ignorance on this issue yet they’re never expected to even get up to speed.
Rubio handled it well. He could have been a jerk and hammered Trump for his ignorance, but instead he took the high road. I’m not a Rubio fan, but he earned respect in his response.
That’s nothing. I bet he does not even know how many nails in the feet of a horse for the shoes.
Exactly, amazing how many get stuck in irrelevance. Don’t even know that the current political battle has changed. Did you read Laz’s post 85 here? http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/3372298/posts?page=85#85
It’s well worth clicking through and reading his post “Elitist vs. Populist”.
Really explains a lot and matches what is going on. I’ve been framing what’s happening with Trump as people sick of elitists for a while now but never put it all together like Laz did. The battlefield has changed, people need to stop acting like Don Quixote fighting imaginary enemies. That how you lose a war.
You are right. I didnt know what the nuclear triad is and most people dont care if Trump doesnt know. He knows now and will be briefed on a lot of other stuff none of us know about should he become president. It was not a serious gaffe like a “oops” moment where your brain goes blank.
i’m 78 years old and I’ve never seen or heard of necular triad and have no idea what it is!
He doesn’t have to know nuclear programs right now. Why would he dive headlong into defense when he’s just a candidate. I assure you, if Trump is elected, he’ll know more about defense than any Senator before he takes office. Unlike these prima donnas we currently have, the man works 18 hours a day and totally devotes himself to the task at hand.
And he’s smarter than most.
