Rubio Explains to Trump What The Nuclear Triad Is
Washington Free Beacon ^ | December 15, 2015 | Daniel Bassali

When Donald Trump could not answer Hugh Hewittss question on the nuclear triad during the fifth GOP debate Tuesday night, Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) was kind enough to take the time to explain what the nuclear triad was to him and any other Americans who may not have known.

Trump was asked to offer his opinion on which leg of the nuclear triad, decried by many as outdated, he believed was most crucial to update. The Republican frontrunner did not appear to understand the topic.

In his original answer, Trump said it was important to have a strong leader with sound judgment during perilous times. He then trailed off to talking about opposing the Iraq War and how important limiting nuclear proliferation is. The response did not touch on Hewitt's question, so he asked again.

"I think for me nuclear – the power, the devastation is very important to me," Trump said in his second attempt.

Someone should ask Rubio about his gay lisp.

He should’ve said:

If nothing else last night illustrated what a limited amount of foreign affairs acumen Donald Trump truly has.

The Donald had a few good ideas and has brought to the forefront topics that needed to be addressed but that’s about it.

Frankly he’s nothing more than a skillful carnival barker who has his supporters so snake-fascinated they can’t think straight.

I’ve been glued to politics and policy since the summer of 2012 and that was the first time I heard “Triad”.

Trump may not know the jargon, in the same way he does not now the same classified info as Senators on Foreign Affairs committees would know. Why should he at this point??

What he DOES know is how to be a leader, how to hire competent people, and how to layout a plan for such people to use their specific knowledge to implement.

I’m sorry, but if you are really butthurt by Trump not being familiar with the “Triad” term, you are clearly not tuned in to the bigger problems our nation is dealing with.

Hewitt showing his ass again, throwing a question at Trump on an obscure subject. A search of Free Republic's archives brings up one thread on the subject in all the years of FR's existence, an article from National Defense Magazine, not exactly a magazine in every office and home.

Could the Nuclear Triad Become a Bi-ad?

I'd heard of the nuclear triad at some point over the years, but didn't immediately recall what it meant. It hardly ranks up there with "Mutually Assured Destruction" and "First Strike Capability" which are terms that have been frequently heard for decades.

For Hewitt to throw out a question asking a candidate to discuss the merits of bombers, ICBMs and submarines as delivery mechanisms for nuclear warheads was just plain stupid in a presidential debate. Hewitt showing his ass and trying try make Trump look bad.

Maybe next debate some showoff moderator will ask for a discussion of the merits of various fighter aircraft and minesweepers in the US arsenal.

“If nothing else last night illustrated what a limited amount of foreign affairs acumen Donald Trump truly has.”

That’s why you have a Sec of State, Chief of Staff, and Sec of Defense to address these matters.

All of the previous debates proved how limited in economic matters the other candidates are, so what’s your point???

Our nation is going down the financial toilet, and a poor economy will destroy us before foreign policy will.

From the debate transcript. A few minutes earlier Carson said:

CARSON: “And speaking of that, our Military needs to be upgraded. You know, you look at things like our Ohio Class submarines, they’re 25 years old. Our minuteman 3 missiles — they are 34 years old. Our B-52 bombers — 50 years old. You know, if we don’t get the military right nothing else matters.”

The next time Hewitt got to ask a question, he asked Trump the following:

HEWITT: Mr. Trump, Dr. Carson just referenced the single most important job of the president, the command, the control and the care of our nuclear forces. And he mentioned the triad. The B-52s are older than I am. The missiles are old. The submarines are aging out. It’s an executive order. It’s a commander-in-chief decision. What’s your priority among our nuclear triad?

So Hewitt no only used the term “Triad”, he explicitly defined it for Trump. And like I said, Hewitt had told Trump the question would be on the test a couple of weeks ago.

Trump could have given a non-committal answer, like “We have to upgrade all of them.”

Instead, we got this:

TRUMP: Well, first of all, I think we need somebody absolutely that we can trust, who is totally responsible; who really knows what he or she is doing. That is so powerful and so important. And one of the things that I’m frankly most proud of is that in 2003, 2004, I was totally against going into Iraq because you’re going to destabilize the Middle East. I called it. I called it very strongly. And it was very important.

[Side note. No one has found any Trump comments criticizing the Iraq invasion prior to the invasion. His first public comments critical of the invasion were in August 2004, 17 months after the invasion.]

But we have to be extremely vigilant and extremely careful when it comes to nuclear. Nuclear changes the whole ball game. Frankly, I would have said get out of Syria; get out — if we didn’t have the power of weaponry today. The power is so massive that we can’t just leave areas that 50 years ago or 75 years ago we wouldn’t care. It was hand-to-hand combat.

The biggest problem this world has today is not President Obama with global warming, which is inconceivable, this is what he’s saying. The biggest problem we have is nuclear — nuclear proliferation and having some maniac, having some madman go out and get a nuclear weapon. That’s in my opinion, that is the single biggest problem that our country faces right now.

HEWITT: Of the three legs of the triad, though, do you have a priority? I want to go to Senator Rubio after that and ask him.

TRUMP: I think — I think, for me, nuclear is just the power, the devastation is very important to me.

I was NOT a “set up”!

If you listened to half of the radio interview Hugh has done with Trump, you would know he’s brought up the subject of the nuclear triad MANY times.

Hugh has had Trump on at least a dozen times in the last 6 months.

I am sure I have heard of it. But I had no idea what it was. Of course, everyone in DC knows, so this was a way of trying to say an outsider has no business in government. It is not necessary to know everything if you are willing to get the best advisers and learn from them. Your job as President is to make the big decisions not to control every detail.

Trump had to explain corporate inversion to other candidates when they asked what it was. Knowing what that is and how to fix it is higher on my list than the nuclear triad.

Ditto and agree with all of the above.

It was meant to be a gotcha question, by Salem hack Hewitt. Thanks for the reasoned replies....rather than pompous, RINOesque snit.

It's just a name. Had Trump been asked: How are nuclear warheads delivered? he would have
answered correctly.

Just Hewitt throwing out a tad bit of gotcha. GOPe lapdogs must do what they are sent
out to do.

So when you open the nuclear football, there’s a prompt that asks “Which leg of the nuclear triad would you like to launch?” And if you don’t answer in two seconds, the football explodes in your face.

Actually, I think Trump knows there are nukes on subs, planes, and in silos. Does anyone really need to know that this is referred to as a “triad”. You could call it “the trinity” or “Manny, Moe, and Jack”.

I tend not to hold these kind of trivialities against politicians, even the ones I don’t like.
