New Obama guidelines: Lean meat has role in healthy diet

New federal dietary guidelines, which were released early Thursday morning, tell Americans to follow a healthy eating pattern that includes a variety of vegetables, fruit, grains, fat-free dairy, oils and a variety of proteins, including lean meats.

The recommendations for what Americans should and shouldn't be eating, which the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) update together every five years, created unprecedented controversy in 2015 when the federally appointed panel of nutritionists that helps draft them considered environmental concerns in recommending that people should eat less meat.

The USDA and HHS relented to industry outrage and promised environmental the environment would not be considered, but congressional leaders wanted to be sure, adding language to the year-end $1.1 trillion spending bill requiring the agencies to conduct a “comprehensive review” of the guidelines and the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee within 30 days.

Groups in the meat industry were relieved to see that lean meats had ultimately been left in the description of a healthy diet. The agencies note in the guidelines that lean meat was also included in the description of a healthy diet in the 2010 guidelines.

“It is clear the agencies took great care in reviewing the science as well as comments on the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee report to develop a common sense policy document that all Americans can use to help them make healthy food choices,” Barry Carpenter, the president and CEO of the North American Meat Institute, said in a statement.

The guidelines note that there is strong evidence to support that eating less meat, including processed meats, reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. They add that a 2,000-calorie diet should be limited to 26 ounces of meat, poultry and eggs per week.

Environmental groups, however, weren’t so happy, saying the agencies failed to provide clear guidance on lowering meat consumption despite strong scientific evidence from the advisory committee on the need for Americans to eat less meat for health, food security and environmental reasons.

“Given the huge health and environmental costs of diets high in factory farmed meat, the lack of clear guidance on lowering meat consumption does a disservice to the public and our future food security,” Kari Hamerschlag, senior program manager with Friends of the Earth, said in a statement. “The administration has clearly put the financial interests of the meat industry over the weight of the science and the health of the American people.”

The guidelines, which were originally due out by the end of 2015, also recommend Americans limit their sodium to 2,300 milligrams a day, consume less than 10 percent of calories per day from added sugars and less than 10 percent of calories from saturated fats.

In tandem with the recommendations, USDA and HHS recommend Americans of all ages meet the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans to help promote health and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

“Americans should aim to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight,” the wrote in the guidelines. “The relationship between diet and physical activity contributes to calorie balance and managing body weight.”

When it comes to what Americans should be drinking, the federal government says Americans should limit alcohol to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men.

And though caffeine is not a nutrient, the guidelines say three to five 8-ounce cups of coffee a day can be incorporated into healthy eating patterns.

“This guidance on coffee is informed by strong and consistent evidence showing that, in healthy adults, moderate coffee consumption is not associated with an increased risk of major chronic diseases, like or premature death, especially from cardiovascular disease,” the guidelines say. “However, individuals who do not consume caffeinated coffee or other caffeinated beverages are not encouraged to incorporate them into their eating pattern.”

“Lean meat”. They’re still stuck on the low fat high carb stupid train, illustrating as usual that whatever fad is in vogue can usually be safely ignored. Eat like your grandma did, and you’ll be fine.

There’s a scripture that says something to the effect that if you eat your food with gratitude to your Father for providing it, it will nourish you. I don’t believe that means entirely in a spiritual way, either.

Agreed and reference the meat. I could not careless what this administration tells me to do. I will eat what I want and I guarantee that I am in better shape than most of them and can out run, push up, pulls ups, sit ups than them.

Makes me laugh when I see some fat overweight person telling me what I should eat when they are in no good of a shape.

Judging by Monica’s endorsement, Jenny Craig is evidently the only diet plan that allows you to eat POTUS!

What’s the point of fat free dairy? Anyone? I accidentally bought some “Land O Lakes” fat free half and half once. The cartons are very similar, and it was terrible.

Half and Half is all about the fat! You can’t do fat free in half and half. Fat is the whole point! You might as well add white colored water (skim milk) to your coffee. Yuck!

I am 75 years old. I play vigorous tennis matches 3-4 times a week and have been active in sports my whole life. I have zero physical problems. My diet would send the health whore industry into catatonic fits. I just don’t overdo any of the so called “junk” that I eat. (except maybe extra cheese pizza)

‘Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee ‘

Save money, close this useless committee and let its staff get private sector jobs.

What the HELL is “Fat Free Half and Half”???? One of the “Half”s refers to CREAM! What, is a pint of “Fat Free Half and Half”, just 8 oz of milk, or what?

Yeah, but then they might contaminate the GOOD part of the country. I think you have to imprison them for life, or ship them off to some socialist hellhole where they'll fit in.

I guess that explains why Obama comes off as a snake and bugs us so darn much... he took on the properties of what he ate.

Eat like they tell you to and you will be heavy and need meds.

People need fat in their diet . Real butter / extra virgin olive oil / coconut oil are good fats and if you eat them you don’t get fat . Stay away from
vegetable oils like canola and corn oil etc and margarine (terrible for you)

Eggs are great for you .

meat or eggs + veggies = lean body

Bread and flour products are terrible for you . Our white flour has been stripped of it’s nutrients and the chemical they add to it to keep it from caking destroys your gut flora. If you want to lose weight the best thing to do is do not eat anything made with flour including pasta .
Plus all it does is make your blood sugar go up and make you gain more weight.

don’t use table salt - they add a chemical to it to keep it from clumping that is terrible for your body . It isn’t the salt that is bad for you but the chemical they add to it . Get some real salt and put it into a pepper grinder (pink Himilayan etc ) or use Kosher salt.

Yogurt - most of the stuff in the grocery store is not good for you , it’s biologically dead . Better than Yogurt is Kefir . Yogurt is easy to make in a crock pot , Kefir is easier to make for many people because it can be made at room temperature. It’s the probiotics in them that you want.

Sauerkraut and homemade kosher pickles (these are not canned but fermented ) are really good for you too and loaded with probiotics

Lots of links on the net to make this stuff like this one .

Animal fats are good for you. No need to trim off the fat. Butter and eggs are also healthy foods. They’ve been lying for decades.

The saddest thing is to see these weird adults in charge of rearing children who wind up deprived of adequate nutrition because of their vegan parents’ ignorance. Some of these children die and others are damaged for life. If you know parents such as this, turn them in as unfit parents before it is too late. A local baby was starved to death by her parents’ evil fixation that the child shouldn’t have any fat on her body...just horrible.
