Hey Republicans, This Is How You Beat Trump—For Real [the Daily Beast wants to save the GOP]
Daily Beast ^ | 17 Feb 16 | Stuart Stevens

A few months ago I wrote that Donald Trump was probably going to withdraw before the Iowa caucuses rather than face the embarrassment of defeat. Wrong. He did lose Iowa, seemed momentarily humbled, but then quickly reverted to form by asserting that he really won. He went on to a landslide victory in New Hampshire and now leads in South Carolina.

While much of the political world speculates that Trump may be creating a new kind of candidacy largely immune to normal attacks, let me make another assertion (that may prove as wrong as the previous): Donald Trump should be easy to defeat. What makes him not a “normal” candidate actually makes him more vulnerable rather than stronger. Let me explain.

In a Republican primary, Trump lacks both an ideological or geographic base. For all the focus on his bigoted remarks about Mexicans and Muslims, Trump has won self-identified moderate voters in both Iowa and New Hampshire. In Iowa, he lost conservatives and very conservatives but won them in NH (in a landslide victory like he had in NH, it’s hard to win everything.) In a party that is increasingly dominated by the South and Sunbelt, Trump lives on Fifth Avenue.

In a Republican primary, Trump lacks both an ideological or geographic base.

That's a little nonsensical. Eisenhower didn't have an "ideological or a geographical base." He managed to win the whole country.

I'm not saying Trump is Eisenhower, or that he'll win, but having a "base" of one's own may not be as valuable as having broad appeal.

I'm also a little confused. Stevens's guy, Romney, didn't have much of a base either. True, he lost -- thanks in no small part to Stevens -- but it's hard for Stuart Stevens to play the "no base" card now.

>> Mexico was gonna pay for it <<

Sure, but since they’re gonna pay for it, they’re gonna insist on using a Mexican contractor and Mexican labor.

Furthermore, it will be built on their side of the Rio Grande, so as to avoid Davis-Bacon requirements.

The Daily Beast is not your friend. Their critique is full of typical flaws. This is NOT a standard college political science campaign. This has been rewritten and dors not fot into standard political campaign manuals. Stop selling us this “this is the way it has always been” BS.

that chorus is only going to get louder from others.

Yeah, because you and your ilk are so good at persuasion.

It has nothing to do with persuasion and everything to do with mathematics. You SprayTan shirts don’t have enough to win nationally and you are constantly alienating the only base trump can turn to.

>>I feel no compulsion to support the nominee of the Republican Party if I think that candidate is a wreck. I am no longer a registered Republican. It’s the candidates job to earn my vote, not mine to hold my nose yet again. I will assess the field at the time of the General Election and make my decision then.

Good choice. Your strong principles will be a great solace after this final free election.

Why dont you stick to bashing Trump, instead of others that may not agree with you.

TY so much for saying this!

Feelings are high.

Trump supporters may be wrong, but they are second to none in their love of America. Maybe Trump is a total charlatan, but his campaign is based on love of America, and his supporters are down to Earth people who love that message.

Personally, having watched the man several hundred times in debates, rallies, town forums and many interviews by people of ALL stripes, I would be very surprised if he were insincere.

Repeating “Trump is a liberal” 10,000 times is not persuading anybody, but at least it expresses a genuine “argument” to not support Trump.

Attacks on Trump supporters themselves has become vile, and has no good possible effect.

And here is a consideration: what if Trump is an effective conservative president? Being wrong about a candidate is one thing, but being vile in attacking his supporters would be (or ought to be) a disgraceful and shameful memory.

If so-called “conservatives” and the GOPe do overt things to derail Trump, it will be the death of those conservatives and the GOPe.

I've been following your graphic posts with a BIG smile.

I've watched almost every single one of those rally's online,
yet the only way I've EVER seen the SIZE of the house
was when pics, such as yours are posted.

Very GOOD and useful tactic. Carry on!

A few more spray tanning sessions we can compare Trump to Idi Amin.

You're fortunate to even engage a response using jr. high caliber replies such as that.

Get it ALL out of your system and then realize that you ACTUALLY BOLSTER Trump's support and supporters.

Sorry to tell you.. you're a DIM-BULB of the lowest magnitude.

Is has nothing to do with persuasion? So you comparing Trump and his supporters to foreign mass murdering dictators is not meant to influence or persuade?

Btw is that the same base of corrupt GOP insiders/supporters who made it clear long ago they vote for Hillary or Bush over Trump?

all I want him to do as President is break everything. Break all political alliance.

A very GOOD goal.

If I'm NOT mistaken we're already better than halfway there.

I think what Trump has done thus far has really CHANGED the paradigm PERMANENTLY.

If he's elected the establishment and system have hell to pay.

If Trump is NOT lected the establishment and system will have hell to pay.

My point: Trump has already OPENED far too many eyes and minds for things to ever stay the same.

Persuading people to vote your way is the definition of electoral politics.

Persuasion is the sine qua non of American campaigns.

But good luck with your "approach," which consists of smearing those who don't support your guy as fascists.

Of course, tRumps “approach” is much better. Call everybody liars, while lying yourself, and accuse George W. Bush of lying about weapons of mass destruction.

That sure makes me want to vote for him. He’s so “special”.
