Cruz is an establishment sitting Senator who argued in front of the Supreme Court a number of times. It is appropriate for a US Senator to attend the funeral. For President Obama not to attend the funeral that is highly inappropriate.

Look, one of his mentors and good friends (Bill Ayers) declared decades ago that 25 million Americans may have to be killed to implement their plans.. so with just one IMO possible murder many of those plans are virtually in place.

Frankly, Trump bears no resemblance to the hypothetical Tyrant of your imagination. No medals, no uniform, no ideological touchstone.

He is an anti-hero - not a crusading knight on a dancing charger, but a janitor with a broom, bucket and shovel.

It's probably better if Obama doesn't go to state funerals. The security arrangements incidental to an appearance by the President are such that they would completely overshadow the occasion, which is supposed to be a funeral for a Supreme Court justice. It would become "The Obama Show" instead of the Scalia funeral Mass. Anybody who has been in a public venue where the President is expected to make an appearance is well aware of the security apparatus that must accompany him, and how intrusive the whole thing gets.

I'm not one to leap to the defense of Obama on policy or protocol matters, but here, he's probably right. Obama did issue a respectful statement of condolence to the Scalia family, which is the proper thing for a President to do. Other than that, the best thing he can do is to stay away so as to avoid creating a massive distraction from the proceedings with his presence.
