Cruz: I'm fine with contested convention
The Hill ^ | 03-09-2016 | Jesse Byrnes

Ted Cruz says he would have no problem with a contested convention over the summer in the event neither he nor Donald Trump secures enough delegates before then to lock up the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump suggested Wednesday morning on "Fox and Friends" that Cruz was making the statement "because he had such a bad night last night."

How do you rectify the fact that Cruz is now contradicting what he said only 3 days ago about about not wanting a contested convention? What happened in the last three days that would make him change his mind enough to publicly contradict himself?

Ted has sold his soul to the GOPe. Everyday that goes by he gets deeper in debt to the GOPe. Sorry thing to see.

Wow, guess he’s not so anti-establishment after all.

Trump needs to make a smock for Cruz to wear to the next debate, emblazoned with all of the logo patches of his donors.....this is actually what the California legislature is proposing for legislators to wear when speaking from the floor......for all the world to see who is sponsoring who.

It is called ‘Nascar Politics’

I like that idea. They could wear a sash and have all their “sponsors” listed.

Simple question. What makes you think that Kasich or Rubio can send their delegates to Cruz? These delegates are pledged to vote for the candidates that their voters selected on the first ballot - Kasich or Rubio’s desires notwithstanding.

Cruz can and I think will win this thing on his own, and can do so whether Rubio and Kasich drop out before or after March 15. But, no question, it is likely to be a close thing.

Maple Leaf Ted has complete taken the ‘conservative outsider’ mask off. Are there any FReepers still believing his crap?

Unfortunately, there are.

Ted will be dumped for Mittens at GOPe alter this summer. Mark my words.

I can explain, but you don’t want to hear it.

Ted was explaining in depth that the electoral system republicans use is well worn and accepted. As a candidate he has no choice but to accept it, but he still, as he has said before, believes that a brokered convention would sow the seeds of contempt within what once was the Grand Old Party. It’s pure common sense..

It’s self explanatory but the Newsies want headlines to push their crud.

Trump seems to be right on track:

However, this assumes that he wins Florida (likely) and Ohio (difficult)

If Cruz thought he could win the primaries he would be insisting that the candidate with the most delegates get the nom. Instead he’s day dreaming about picking up Rubio’s and Kasich’s delegates. It’s not going to happen. Rubio wants a political future in FL and won’t want his finger prints on any part of a convention brawl. He’ll release his delegates and go home to FL.

Technically, Rubio and Kasich’s delegates would be unpledged if they drop out before the convention. However, if Cruz got their endorsement (and considering the #NeverTrump movement), custom dictates that their delegates (at least surely most, if not all) would pledge themselves to the endorsed candidate.

Yes, but I guess what I fail to understand is why just the other day, he said he was not OK with a contested convention.

Contested. That’s what Ted said. I know the difference between the two.

That is most certainly NOT what Cruz is talking about. Cruz will likely have all the delegates he needs by the time of the California primary.

I assume you mean Trump will have all the delegates he needs by then. Probably. But read Cruz's words again, please. He is saying IF Trump doesn't have them (hint: "hat's what "neither he nor Trump secures enough" means).

"...in the event neither he nor Donald Trump secures enough delegates before then..."

Are you saying that if Trump doesn't have enough delegates they ought to dismiss the rule and give it to him anyway? That sounds like a brokered convention to me, and I don't support it whether it goes FOR or AGAINST Trump.

Contested convention means either Trump or Cruz wins.

Brokered convention means Romney/Ryan.

No...there is no incipient ditinction between the terms, except for current semantics...a contested convention opens the door to the Romney/Ryan ticket as easily as a brokered does, because they are the same things...

the question revolves around what level of manipulation becomes necessary to resolve the nomination, not what term is used to describe that manipulation...

These delegates are pledged to vote for the candidates that their voters selected on the first ballot - Kasich or Rubio’s desires notwithstanding.

Typically that is true, until the first ballot produces no winner...I’m not sure, but state parties might rule what happens to the liberty of the state delegates. I think it most likely that a floor fight will release many delegates from their pledges...

Hiring Neil Bush was a stupid, stupid idea but for anyone to suggest that Sen Cruz is “establishment” well, they just don’t know what they are talking about. To quote your hero Mr Trump” everybody hates him in the Senate, he doesn’t have a friend”. Trying to paint Sen Cruz as establishment is as phony as claiming Mr Trump is a bigot.

BTW the only entity responsible for a brokered convention is the voter. If Mr Trump has enough votes to win the nomination outright then bravo, he has my full support as the nominee. If no candidate can achieve that required delegate vote total then it is every man for himself.

The article comes from the Hill...that should be enough to say it’s stretched beyond credibility. I gave you my explanation as I know Ted and what he thinks.

Secondly, it has become patently obvious that nobody is getting out so this leaves Ted with the likelihood of a brokered convention so he’s preparing himself for it and thinking about it which is why his response was picked up by the newsies...it fits trumps Liar, liar, pants on fire campaign tactic.

I think it’s hilarious that more people trust Ted then trump yet vote for trump..just shows you how sick the country is.

A brokered convention will be of no help to ted cruz IMO...he knows that, but because we may well be headed in that direction, you must prepare for it.
