What has happened to Free Republic? [What difference at this point can it possibly make?]

Posted on 03/17/2016 3:13:11 PM PDT by katwoman5779

Since Obuma was elected to POTUS, I have been coming to Free Republic to get news, opinions and a few laughs. Most of the serious posts were bemoaning the out of control government and what could be done about it. "Oh Whoa is Me!". Then along comes a constitutional conservative. For the first time since Ronald Reagan, we have a constitutional candidate running for the GOP nomination. This man was elected by conservatives to go to Washington and stand up to the elites that no longer listen to the American people. He didn't go to Washington and "fall in" with the crowd. He went there and stood up to them just like he said it would - calling a spade a spade. I'm sorry, but I don't understand how otherwise intelligent people can fall for the likes of Donald Trump. This man was donating to the same people we were fighting to throw out of office the last eight years. Suddenly he is a conservative after years of joining with the liberals to promote big fat bloated government. He is not an outsider. He has been greasing the palms of the slime bags in Washington for 30 years. He can't even define what conservatism is. Wake up America. You are no better than the sycophants that suck up to Obuma. You can't see that Trump is just pushing your buttons with his rhetoric - just like Obuma pushed his sycophants buttons. The hate I see on Free Republic for Ted Cruz, Mark Levin and all the other great conservative leaders remind me of liberal websites. It is disgusting.

We conservatives are a minority in the Republican Party.

The Majority are Populists.

Happily, the RINO Liberals are the smallest group.

Therefore, it is incumbent upon us relatively few conservatives to take the next several years to inform and encourage our Populist brethren to embrace actual conservatism. That’s a real job. It starts now.

Good luck, and G-d Bless!

I like the way you think, Uncle Miltie. That is a wonderfully positive way to look at things.

Better question: “What has happened to our Free Constitutional Republic?”

IMO, many in the Free Republic have forgotten that the #1 greatest threat to our Free Constitutional Republic is the mostly unconstitutional, illegal, and illegitimate federal government. Our greatest threat is not China, Mexico or even ISIS and the Radical Islam. The greatest threat to our free way of life as we know it is our own federal government.

Historically death and destruction to a society has not been mainly due to invasion from foreign governments but the malevolence of the country’s own government. So it is here.

I love America but hate our government. May God once again save and bless America by setting her free from her own tyrannical government, limiting it once again with the chains of the Constitution. Either our government is a slave to the Constitution or the American People are slaves to the government.

I trust in his ability to negotiate a GOOD deal...

#211 Perhaps it’s because he spent 30+ years funding and supporting Democrat Candidates and their liberal Agendas.

Including but not limited to Hillary Clinton

I have been saying the same things on threads for 6 months but the Trumpeteers are all so snake-fascinated with the carnival barker that it’s like trying to discuss issues with a brick wall. What surprises me even more is that FR admin not only tolerates but even encourages their behavior

Happy to see someone put all my thoughts so briefly and succinctly in a single posting.

Go to your safe space then. Levin and Limbaugh are all talk. They make a bit of a ruckus here and there, but by and large they won't put themselves out for conservatism; it pays too well for them to have an F'd up government and country so they can run their chops about it on their programs. Cruz? Showing himself GOPe more and more everyday; sorry you cannot see it.

I've been here a LOT longer than you, been kicked and banned over the years because I spoke out and got uppity against the "establishment" and this site's owners (who are very "populist" around election times; them donations doncha know). I want Trump in for one thing and one thing only, to WRECK DC. To demolish it. To quite literally bring down politics and watch the country burn because until that is done NONE of us will have freedom away from fedzilla. Its going to be painful going through it but what is much more painful now is watching that idiot obama and his dem cohorts set up an America that will never be again because it won't be AROUND. Let's get the reset underway, get the bull in the China shop and clean out DC. Do you really think Trump want's to lose it all to the FSA? It'll be painful to be true, but it needs done. Cruz, he'll just be snarky and once elected go along to get along. How soon until he starts reaching across the isle? Anyone got a betting pool?

Perhaps you should ask Sarah Palin as she fully supported Cruz for the Senate, but chose to endorse Trump instead? Along with Sheriff Joe, Jeff Sessions, Phyllis Schafley, Ann Coulter, Chris Christie, Ben Carson and many more...

Thanks. I’m getting older. I can see the arc of history, and where I’ll leave it. I’d like to encourage the ideas I hold dear to be promoted well beyond my years.

But I’ve got a few more decades left in me. I’ll be nipping the heels of leftists for some time to come!

> “For the first time since Ronald Reagan, we have a constitutional candidate running for the GOP nomination.”

In 1980, Ronald Reagan was not elected because he was conservative. Conservatism was more a fringe ill-defined political ideology.

Reagan was elected because he was viewed as a hardliner against the Soviets and against terrorists. The awful economic catastrophe of the Carter years together with the awful image of Jimmy Carter made many democrats stay home and the Iranian Hostage Crisis ushered in the hardliner who was Ronald Reagan.

Conservatism had nothing to do with it. It wasn’t until well into 1983 that Ronald Reagan’s class, eloquence, tact, wit, tenacity and optimism took the electorate by storm causing people to wake up to the restored prestige of the United States around the world. People were so proud to be American and proud to have Ronald Reagan as their president that they started talking conservatism, acting conservative, calling themselves conservative. Ronald Reagan won the hearts and minds of Americans and at the same time gave birth to a widespread acceptance of conservatism.

The electorate of 2016 were kids and teenagers when Ronald Reagan left office. They really don’t know how great it was. The came to be politically aware when William Clinton was causing a disgrace in the Oval Office. They became active when George W. Bush was leading America into endless wars and allowing banksters to run roughshod over the American economy.

Some of the new uninformed electorate had welcomed Barack Obama as a breath of fresh air but soon found out he was phony and not to be trusted. They are now wise. They don’t understand or trust liberals but they are also wary of some people that call themselves conservative.

Mitch McConnell says he is conservative. So does Paul Ryan. So did John Boehner. The electorate looks at these so-called conservatives as liars.

In 2010, the percentage of Independents in the electorate was 24%. Today it is 42%. These independents lean conservative but they don’t trust people that say they are conservative and they don’t trust progressives. They are looking for someone they can think should be their President but it has nothing to do with progressivism or conservatism.

Today’s electorate wants to listen to conservatism but it’s not relevant to their lives. They want someone that’s in tune with their values and their struggle. They want someone who understands them and who is smart and practical.

Today’s electorate listen to Ted Cruz and they don’t get him. They listen to Donald Trump and think he will put them first.

Here it is in a nutshell why Ted will not win now. He is not yet liked personally. He can say all the right words and express all the right principles. But he is not yet liked.

Donald Trump is liked but not at first. He turns people off but as they follow him, he grows on his listeners, his viewers. Suddenly his audience will see that he has a genuineness about him that they can identify with. After many views in many situations, they see he is flawed but that he self-corrects or that he is maligned and taken out of context. The viewers become invested in him because he is learning as he goes along and he exposes the hideous corruption of the press and the establishment. Then as he and his viewers learn together, a bond is formed as Donald shows his personal side, his family, his love for America’s vets.

Ted Cruz never did any of the above. Ted Cruz tries to present just about everything as a constitutional plea. He’s a conservative which is great but that’s not enough.

Ronald Reagan was not elected in 1980 because he was a conservative. He was elected because he was feared and liked and by the time 1984 rolled around, the American electorate was in love with all things Ronald Reagan including his ideology known as conservatism.

The bottom-line is the right message has to have the right messenger and the messenger must be liked FIRST before the message persuades. And if the messenger is not liked, they need to work on being liked by showing their humanity including their vulnerability. Because any candidate can order up a message, a script that pushes all the right buttons. There’s a message and there’s a person. They both have to be liked. Ted has concentrated on his message but not his person. He’s so perfect he’s not human so he can never get close to the average voter.

100% agree.

Something terrible is going on here... It really saddens me to see he flat out rejection of all the principles we hold dear so these angry people can “win”...

What the hell is the point of winning if you have to sell yourself out completely to do so?!?!

It’s become more of a Trump Republic. I got the appeal of Trump in the beginning, but once I saw his long history of taking the exact opposite positions, listened closer to his lack of specifics and willingness to bend his positions when challenged (We’ll deport them all...but let them back in!), and saw his thuggish behavior to anyone who criticized him or stood in his way, I realized we were dealing with someone who could not be trusted, especially with real power. Trump is running not on principles, but on a thirst for power. And the more you listen to him, the more you hear a door-to-door salesman on your front porch, willing to promise you anything you want in a desperate plea to close the sale. Trump doesn’t represent a value system, he represents a brand.

Ted Cruz is a true-blue constitutional conservative. His values, beliefs, positions and loyalty to the conservative cause have been entirely consistent not just since he ran for office, but going back years to when he was a kid in college. Cruz is running on the principles that everyone who grew up believing in the Republican party platform and conservatism cherishes. He understands all the history and philosophy that underlines exactly why our government isn’t working and what needs to be changed to bring freedom and prosperity back to the people. Cruz represents something bigger than himself and does it with great intelligence, eloquence and depth.

Though I haven’t “fallen” for him, I’ll likely end up voting for Donald since he’s better than Hillary or Bernie. The discourse this cycle on FR strikes me as mild historically. I’m curious katwoman, what’s happening in 5779?
