Explaining the miracle at Midway (the great movie is on now_

See story at link; we are celebrating freedom and honoring all those who gave their all. If you have never seen the film, you have no idea what you are missing.

I would bet that not 10% of those in high school could even place the battle as being in WWII. We have raised a nation of idiots thanks to the leftists who have destroyed our education system and any sense of patriotism.

LOL. Just saw Erik Estrada. Even in darkness on ship deck his teeth are so frigging white.

For me, it’s a much more enjoyable movie than Tora! Tora! Tora! :=)

We came very close to losing that battle which would have added at least two years to the war in the Pacific

Notice how they bleep the words “Jap” or “Japs” in most showings? Not that I like derogatory terms but leaving the words in would be an accurate description of the sentiments of that time. PC run amok again.

I don’t know if it was an according to Hoyle miracle, but the US Navy’s position was appropriately named Point Luck.

I would bet that not 10% of those in high school could even place the battle as being in WWII.

When I was in high school five decades ago, I, along with my friends not only knew of the battle and its significance, but most if not all of us could name the four Japanese aircraft carriers which were sunk.

Midway is a great movie. They did a good job, given the movie making craft of the time. A pivotal battle of the war in the Pacific that opened the door to bombings of Japan and the eventual end of the war.

Good article. Great points.

Saw it in the theater as a kid. What does Midway and Battlestar Galactica have in common? Both were done with Sensurround that made the explosions sound like it was destroying the speakers as well. Midway was the 2nd to use it and Battlestar Galactica the 4th.

After the code breakers figured out where the Japs were going to attack, we still had to beat them. It was very close to being a defeat for us but our dive bombers taking advantage of the torpedo bombers drawing the fighters, turned the battle totally around in 10 minutes.

The Japanese kept it from being a shutout by sinking one of ours the next day. While they were doing so we sank their last carrier which left them no place to land.

And if it hadn't been for Japan worrying about invading Alaska, Midway would probably have been lost:

Originally planned to be launched prior to the attack on Midway, on 16 Apr Nagano conceded to Yamamoto that the Aleutian Islands attack was to take place at the same time as the attack on Midway in order to maintain strategic surprise in north and central Pacific. Originally opposing the Aleutian Islands addition to his plan, Yamamoto delegated the entire planning of Aleutian Islands operation to Captain Kameto Kuroshima.

My Dad fought the Japanese in WWII at Attu, Aleutian Islands, Alaska. It was 20- 30 below and most of the Army still had summer uniforms.
Till his dying day they were all Japs.

I saw it in the theater and experienced the special sound effects that made made the audience feel the vibrations from the explosions on the screen. I had been looking forward to the film and mostly enjoyed it, but I didn’t care for the scenes of love and romance, which I thought had no place in the movie.

Too bad Hollywood became what it did.

With all the re-makes and re-boots that they make today that nobody wants, Midway would be a good movie to re-make with today's effects.

The little snowflakes of today would find no safe spaces in the Pacific.

Torable! Torable! Torable! was actually better than the 2001 movie Pearl Harbor.

I was a kid back then. I remember reading about the Battle of Midway.

We usually referred to them as Japs. If we wanted to be a bit more disrespectful, we called them Nips.

It’s not as if they were respectful of us. We certainly treated them better than they treated us.
