I’ve actually done, not merely know how to do— but DONE, all but three of these (including survive bear attack; he was a smallish one, but it still counts). The three I haven’t actually done are: #19 CPR (certified, but never had to do), #76 Whistle with fingers, #80 Ride a horse

And the sub-items for your #1: Know how to arc-weld using a standard electric welder (not the MIG/TIG stuff) and know how to oxy-acetylene weld.

I would add to that list “Sharpen a knife and your tools.”

Changing a tire and changing your own oil are quickly becoming skills hard to master.

I can do so on my Dad's truck but my wife's new car didn't even have a spare tire and I am told changing oil on some new cars is an exercise in frustration due to design features that make it a real chore.

That just reminded me - Whistle with fingers, never could do. Surviving bear attack - Haven’t had to yet, but there have been plenty of bear sightings in the area. Hope I never have the opportunity to try.

Agree with the list except for two:

Sew a button (that’s what a tailor, or your wife, is for), and calm a crying baby (for the wife again).

Tried my hand at both, and i can truthfully say that they are not manly skills. If they were, I would have mastered them.

Lots of great reads at artofmanliness.com

I’m lacking the Y-chrom and I have trouble with #3, hanging a picture. Got some very heavy paintings and no drywall, just old plaster. I’ve noticed it doesn’t appreciate hammer activity and I can’t locate the studs.

Then if I do get the nails in, I need help lifting the painting anyway.

#1 should be “Pray”.

OK, I can’t play a guitar. Or whistle with my fingers. Oh well, 98% ain’t bad.

My daughters can all do at least 80+ of these.

I’m 95 out of 100 on these. Basically a young man should join the Army, as that’s where I learned most of them. Boy’s Life magazine and shop classes in middle and high school filled in the rest. Though my father was (is) a wonderful man, I didn’t learn much from him on “manly” things. Perhaps some small engine repair tricks and how to throw a curve ball.

will praying change a tire?

will praying provide the warmth of a fire?

will praying provide the sewn on button to make the coat warm?

rather than depend on God for every little thing, there is first self reliance

They are flat out wrong on Kitchen Knives and sharpening them. In their article on that, they state the following:

Steel – a tool used to sharpen knives.

A Steel is not used to sharpen a knife, it is used to “de-burr” a knife after sharpening it properly. A Steel will never properly sharpen a knife unless it is not a steel, but a hone made to look like a steel. Their technique for usage is wrong as well.

I did like some of the other videos, but was hoping to find more useful info on knife sharpening as I always like to see another take on it.

Check, check and check.

All except that "Whistle with your fingers".

I never have been able to figure that one out...

Why isn’t killing indoor pests on that list? Bugs, flies, spiders, mice.

I would think that’s one of the top male missions.

Some things on the list could also be condensed into “All Things Car.”

Well, there is a reason we were issued a little pocket size sewing kit on Parris Island. And yes, I had to use mine a couple of times. It can also be used to suture wounds, if needed.

Crying babies? Well, I'm good with kids, but I'd rather not be around them.

Good list. I enjoy this website; my oldest son does as well.

Hubby and I have tried to raise our boys to be able to do all the things on this list, and for the most part, I think we’ve succeeded. I see downthread that someone quoted Heinlein. Heinlein was right way back then, and he’s right now.

Thanks for posting.

Regards,

101. Know how to properly secure your perimeter.

1. Cleared and interconnecting fields of fire.

2. Double apron barbed wire, and triple concertina, with tangle-foot encircling entire perimeter.

3. Phu-gas covering likely avenues of approach.
