There is more at stake than just the race for President and vice-President. All 435 members of the House of Representatives, one third of the Senate, plus many state and local elections.
The act of 1947 Act of Succession specifies that the office shall go first to the Speaker of the House and then the President pro tempore of the Senate should there be no speaker.

Elections being stopped or delayed is not an uncommon event in countries run by Africans.

Not true.
Carnahan died three weeks BEFORE the election. The governor said that Carnahan should remain on the ballot, and if his name wins the governor would appoint his wife to fill the seat.
Many of us said this was illegal and unconstitutional, as the candidate must be a living resident of the state, but he was a Democrat and his opponent John Ashcroft was too much the gentleman, so what can you do?
Just to poke the eye further, Jean Carnahan voted AGAINST confirming Ashcroft for Attorney General, so this goes to show that Republican shows of good faith are never returned by Democrats. This is why it is so infuriating when the likes of Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, Orrin Hatch, and John McCain can't seem to confirm Democrats fast enough.
