Like Ike? A Trump presidency could mirror Eisenhower
The Washington Times ^ | September 19, 2016 | Ralph Z. Hallow

With swing-state polls reportedly driving some nervous Hillary Clinton supporters to check out housing prices in Canada, attention is turning to what many in both parties thought the impossible -- a Donald Trump presidency and what it might look like.

Though the temperament and personality hardly match, there are enough parallels between the high-energy business tycoon and Dwight D. Eisenhower to make the avuncular Ike's Oval Office tenure six decades ago a predictor of a Trump presidency's features.

The World War II hero and five-star Army general credited with winning the war in Europe wasn't rigidly ideological any more than Mr. Trump. Neither man had dipped a toe in the choppy water of U.S. politics before running for president. Both were highly successful at their chosen lines of work.

"Trump has staked out positions that do not allow him to be pigeonholed ideologically -- that makes him more akin to an Ike figure certainly," said Eric Hargan, who was Health and Human Services Department COO under President George W. Bush.

Frankly, I’m not satisfied with the conservative idolization of Ronald Reagan. I appreciate your points about Eisenhower. I was born during his administration so did not “live thru” it. One must study history but living in a time gives more information. As a youth I heard from my dad about his thoughts on current events to him under Eisenhower, Truman and just the end of FDR’s dynasty. Daddy mostly approves of Ike on military matters but he has a big issue over McCarthy. Daddy sees McCarthy as a hero. In today’s world the equivalent would be fighting terrorism and/or illegal immigration. Dad hates to this day what the media did to Sen. McCarthy and blames other politicians and Ike for not giving him more backing in the end.

I saw terrorism begin under Carter and yeah the Iranians released hostages the day Reagan took office but we continued to have terror attacks from Muslims under his watch. He also instituted a huge amnesty for illegals that I find fault with.

I don’t want Reagan or Nixon or Eisenhower. I want someone MORE conservative. Right now, I think Donald Trump is talking the right talk. I pray he gets elected and that he’s not just all talk.

Bill Clinton was the luckiest SOB on the planet. There’s no other way to explain his Presidency.

Mr. Trump and Eisenhower share a budget-cutting penchant and a skepticism about how business sells to government and how government buys from business.

I don't see that in Trump. He's talked about increases in defense spending, increases in infrastructure spending, increases in Social Security and Medicare. He has not identified any meaningful spending cuts he would pursue.

As for Eisenhower, his first budget was $71 billion and his last one was $106 billion. Federal spending as a percentage of GDP went up almost every year. Again, not sounding like a budget cutter.

Exactly.

And even at that, he never got 50% of the popular vote and was impeached.

I like Ike.

I was born during Ike’s term.

I remember watching the Republican convention on TV in '56. We did not have TV in '52, so missed that one.

I’ll second Charles Martel. Exactly what we need today. I worked on Eisenhower’s reelection campaign but have never been sold on the man. He was more of a politician than he was soldier and I’ll never forgive him for siding with Montgomery over Patton. In the end he sold Patton down the river and that cost thousands of American lives.

God Bless!

“...and I’ll never forgive him for siding with Montgomery over Patton. In the end he sold >>Patton<< down the river and that cost thousands of American lives.”

Including Patton’s own life. He was assassinated.

Trump reminds me of Patton in many ways. It is easy to see he regards Patton (and MacArthur) as a hero. Show me a man’s heroes and I’ll show you the man. Go TRUMP!

Trump will be unique in many ways—Some elements of IKE true, some of JFK, Some of Reagan, and a bit of Truman. He is his own man—for all his weak spots his leadership skills will win the day. 1. He will build the wall. 2.He will reform taxes. 3. He will rebuild the Navy and army. 4. He will solve the immigration crisis. 5. He will crush ISIS and end the war on Terrorism. 6. He will end the racism/BLM movement. 7. He will re-stimulate the economy-—all in the face of unrelentingly opposition of the Media and Hollywood, The Democrats and colleges, and the international one worlders.

Ike was a disappointment, didn’t like Kennedy at all, and Truman only did one good thing. Ike’s best were the road network and Operation Wetback. Reagan was great. Agree Trump is his own man but he doesn’t have a lot of weak spots. I love his loud mouth. Time we did away with all the garbage called “politically correct”. I grew up saying what I think and don’t intend on changing my tune. Am sick and tired of Americans being turned into WIMPS!

He has not identified any meaningful spending cuts he would pursue.

Um, for starters, how about abolishing the DOE and significantly scaling back the scope and regulatory powers of the EPA?

And how about repealing 0bamacare?

President Trump will cut plenty of government spending, and the investment on things like infrastructure will at least be under Constitutional auspices.

Vote Trump!

Um, for starters, how about abolishing the DOE and significantly scaling back the scope and regulatory powers of the EPA?

You call that "meaningful"? Even if Trump did call for eliminating the Department of Energy completely and eliminating the EPA completely you would save about $16 billion a year. The increase in infrastructure spending alone that Trump is calling for is $200 billion a year. Defense is probably more than that.

And how about repealing 0bamacare?

It's not the repeal that scares me. It's the replace part.

President Trump will cut plenty of government spending, and the investment on things like infrastructure will at least be under Constitutional auspices.

So you say. When is he going to say that?

Patton is the one who should’ve become President in 1948. He would’ve stopped the Communist infiltration of our government dead in its tracks. Too many in power needed him dead, and they got their wish.
