Ag Secretary to America: Stop Wasting Food, Cut Back Portions

WASHINGTON -- Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said America needs to stop wasting food, even if that means teaching people to cut back on the amount of food on their plates.

Speaking at the National Press Club on Monday, the former Iowa governor said long-term food insecurity "is a challenge, because we're going to have to increase food production -- I've seen anywhere from 50 to 70 percent in the next 35 years -- to meet a growing world population."

"But the first step, and the one way the USDA can provide help and assistance to meet this need, is to expand on the -- on the issue of food waste," Vilsack said. "A third of the food that we grow, raise and produce in this country is never consumed the way it was intended. It's wasted."

I agree to an extent. Hearing you say it is fine, hearing a gov’t official say it is NOT fine.

“As for the third message, it referred to a very simple error which could be set right in a couple of minutes. As short a time ago as February, the Ministry of Plenty had issued a promise (a ‘categorical pledge’ were the official words) that there would be no reduction of the chocolate ration during 1984. Actually, as Winston was aware, the chocolate ration was to be reduced from thirty grammes to twenty at the end of the present week. All that was needed was to substitute for the original promise a warning that it would probably be necessary to reduce the ration at some time in April...

And WHO defines: portion?

Usually the doctor of whatever fat bastid needs the help of a doctor to lose weight.

why do we subsidize farmers to grow corn just to burn in our cars?....if the world is so hungry for OUR food resources....

on principle, I agree that we are way too wasteful....I'm all for making good use of our food....

but the rich elites have no business telling we peons how to scarf along....stop their gluttony first, and then you can lecture us...

Are you suggesting that there should be government regulations/mandates as to portion sizes that can be sold in a free market as for restaurants and grocery stores?

Absolutely not. My comments were strictly meant as personal guidelines. Self control. And it was merely an observation that none can deny if they open their eyes. Portion sizes that is.

have you ever tried shopping and cooking for one?

Man it is hard. My kids have moved out and it is me and the Mrs. I cook all the time and my wife loves what I cook. I'll admit, I'm pretty danged good. My chili has won contests. My Chicken Francaise is to die for. But...

I simply cannot cook for 1 or 2. There will ALWAYS be leftovers. It's the way I was raised and the way Mom taught me. I have tried and I tell ya...it is NOT easy.

going to Golden Corral is a test of ones control, no doubt, but I get the impression that a lot of these folks just don't have access to good meals normally...thus, the piling on of food...

besides, just try to tell people at an "all you can eat" place that they can't have all they want...

The low fat low protein modern medical recommendations have been more counterproductive than helpful. I let my pet cats eat dry food to satiation and they don’t become blimps because both the fat and protein content are high.

I go for high protein, high fat at GC, then fill it out with some carbs later in the meal.

Plus, if I paid for it, what difference does it make?

Personally, if I found a restaurant that served half of what most do and charged me less for it, I'd eat out more often. I know the economics and a restaurant that did that would probably lose money. But I'd rather get a smaller portion for less money than lug home whatever is leftover.

“Our needs are the only concerns we should have.”

Not true. We should also be concerned about how our country and citizens can profit from selling that food to hungry foreigners ;)

The problem is not that we don’t have enough food for the poor.

The problem is that the poor don’t have the skills to earn enough to PAY for their own food, and the middle-class is NOT going to be able to be taxed enough to support an ever-larger number of welfare cases.

Contraception without consent: the way Forward to Progress! You are making our dear leader Mrs. Sanger so-o-o proud.

OK. Instead, make food aid conditional upon sterilization. Give them the choice. Want to make as many babies as you want? Then feed them yourself.
