There may be one big difference. The Confederacy could not win diplomatic recognition from any other country. Should California declare its independence, it would probably be granted diplomatic recognition by most countries in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and even some members of the European Union. Russia and China might even put California under their nuclear umbrellas.
No kidding, my California county went for Trump and there are very few illegal aliens here, most of whom keep a very low profile. I have even had visitors to our area tell me that "This is like America in the 1950s!"
I’ve lived in CA since ‘94. It is getting progressively (no pun intended) worse...the Southern Counties used to be red not too long ago...and my county, Kern, used to be DARK red, now a pink...it’s just a matter of time now.
I am currently looking for an escape “route”...there is not enough of us left to carry on the fight. Couldn’t even generate enough signatures on petitions to fight “gunmaggedon”.
CA is toast IMO.

Actually there are at least a dozen refineries here. From Richmond down to Bakersfield, then Carson, Torrance, Harbor City, Wilmington and Long Beach and more.
