A lamp to light the way, and a coin to pay the ferryman on the River Styx. 22 dead soldiers?

That makes sense, I’ll bet you are correct.

BTW anybody else notice the reference to this all taking place in a commune? Geez.

commune

That word is not being used correctly in this context. Windisch is a small town of about 6000 nor very far from where I live. Community or even village would have been much more appropriate.

"The Local" is no the best at translating into english ...

You’re gonna spoil the grant money that would have been used to come to that conclusion.

Communes in Switzerland are political subdivisions like counties in the United States. It’s also true in Italy and other countries.

Switzerland is divided into Cantons which are roughly states which are further redivided into Districts (counties) and then communes - but in the US we don't use that term in the same way - which is why I said community.
Municipality is another way to refer to them. It refers to the “city” level of government (with surrounding areas). County is a bad example as a county contains several cities / villages / communities.

Windisch is a village in the county of Brugg in the state of Aargau in the country of Switzerland. And quite picturesque!

At one time Windisch was the site of a Roman Legion camp. There is a small Roman theater there.

A lamp to light the way, and a coin to pay the ferryman on the River Styx. 22 dead soldiers?

Seems a likely explanation.

That’s the most logical conclusion-a funerary offering for being ferried across the river Styx-doesn’t look mysterious to me...
