Trump: GOP tax bill 'essentially' repeals ObamaCare
The Hill ^ | 12/20/2017 | Jordan Fabian

President Trump on Wednesday claimed the Republican tax plan “essentially” repeals former President Obama’s signature health-care law.

“When the individual mandate is being repealed, that means ObamaCare is being repealed,” Trump said during a Cabinet meeting at the White House. “We have essentially repealed ObamaCare and we will come up with something much better.”

The GOP tax overhaul gets rid of the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate, which requires almost all Americans to purchase health insurance or pay a fine.

Trump said he refrained from playing up that measure because he was worried about how the news media would report it, but added “now that it’s approved, I can say that.”

Despite Trump’s claim, the tax bill does not repeal ObamaCare entirely.

People will still be able to purchase insurance through individual marketplaces, Medicaid expansion is preserved and consumer protections remain in place.

It sets it to $0. The individual mandate is still in effect, just with no penalty.

Bastards. They've created a back door route for a future Congress to resurrect the beast.

We shall see if removing this linchpin actually destroys ObamaCare. I'm not convinced that it will.

So tell me again how it's repealed?

It was unsustainable in the first place. The unsustainability has been sped up. The nice part is, your premiums may go up, but you aren't being forced to pay them.

To me the weird part of this is that the IRS already said, very clearly, at the start of 2017 that they had no intention of enforcing the Obamacare fines, and indeed had no reliable method for doing so other than withholding refunds, and since not all taxpayers GET refunds, that would be inequitable.

SO basically as of that moment, the individual mandate no longer existed. I don’t really see in practical terms what else needed to be changed. It’s like those arcane laws they find on the books, “you can’t walk your goat on Wednesday in Tuscaloosa.” If it’s not being enforced, is it really even a law?

Alternatives to health insurance schemes, which provide fee-for-service -

Non-traditional practitioners, essentially herbalists and “wellness” clinics.

Mutual support societies, in which an affiliated group all pay into a common fund, and services are paid for out of their pooled resources.

Pay out of pocket, negotiating with the service provider directly, discount for cash.

Or go to the old standby, Health maintenance organizations, which were despised and loathed by everybody.

Obamacare did not outlaw health insurance sales directly, only demanding that certain services must be provided by all insurers. Once this mandate is removed, free market health insurance plans will abound.

Apparently the author of this article in The Hill, Jordan Fabian, either lacks reading comprehension or else is a lying partisan idiot. (OK, I'll admit that both could be true.)

Does Jordan Fabian not understand that "We have essentially repealed ObamaCare" does not mean the same thing as "We have entirely repealed ObamaCare"?

Or else he, like many other so-called 'journalists', decided to intentionally lie about what President Trump actually said, preferring instead to falsely put words into the President's mouth.

I kind of wish he wouldn’t say it this way.

It repeals the mandate, but does not repeal the odious and onerous coverage requirements that cause the extremely high prices.

As a 50+ year old man, why would I need coverage for obstetrics for myself?

My question is if this also repeals all of the provisions mandated by ObamaCare or just reduces the penalty to $0?

Will I now be able to buy a high deductible, catastrophic plan now, with reasonable premiums, or will I still be forced to purchase a “comprehensive” policy that covers dozens of things which I will never use that costs thousands of dollars a year?

From a friend of a friend:

..”In addition, like ObamaCare this tax package will be very difficult to undo even when the GOP loses its majority at some point in the future. The Dems would need a Democratic president and both houses of Congress, something unlikely to happen for a while. And even if they did hold such majorities, they would have trouble getting moderate Democrats to go along (similar to how moderate Republicans scuttled each ObamaCare repeal vote.)

Speaking of ObamaCare, although not officially repealed, as recently noted by Fox News, it is instead being repealed by stealth. For instance, this tax package just passed removes the ObamaCare mandate to purchase health insurance. Additionally, Trump has refused so far to bail out the insurance companies, who are losing huge sums of money from the ObamaCare markets, further eroding what’s left of that hapless legislation.

Ironically, the BS reason accepted by Chief Justice Roberts in 2012, that the ObamaCare mandate is actually a tax, is what allowed Trump to add its repeal to the tax package. Love it. As usual, what goes around, comes around, especially in politics. “

Thank you President Trump and Ajit Pai for saving America from Soros’ communist net neutrality, obamacare etc.

Trump saved America in several ways by stopping several democrat plans any of which alone would have destroyed America ..
.
1.Trump stopped Obama’s policy of adding 97,000 pages of government regulations per year

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/12/30/obama-oversees-record-year-regulation-97000-pages/

3. Hillary was planning on dissolving the USA border and letting millions of Muslims and illegals in and giving them all amnesty and hillary care to have a voting army for full socialism.
http://www.breitbart.com/2016-presidential-race/2016/05/25/clinton-releases-plan-dissolve-us-border-within-100-days/

4. Trump and Pia destroyed Soros’ and Obama’s net neutrality
5. Net Neutrality was just one move in a sequence of events to completely take over the internet. A sequence that happened so slowly none of you noticed it happening at all: This lays it all out :
http://boards.4chan.org/pol/thread/152760068/the-globalist-takeover-of-the-internet

6.Soros funded and is behind this “net neutrality”
http://ijr.com/2015/03/270555-soros-groups-dropped-82-million-push-net-neutrality-interesting-thing-happened-placeholder/

99% of Americans are not even aware of even 1 of these links that show that democrats would have destroyed America in a few years with. Yet every American should read these links to see the threat we are under.

And these are just things that I am aware of . There could be other plots and threats from democrats. As these prove America and Freedom last as long as Trump is president and not much longer after that 3 years at most .

OK, a question - is it REALLY possible to drop Obamacare now and pick it up when one is sick? I had cancer last year and dont want to play with fire, but my premiums with two kids is over 3k a month (only one provider in my area).

I dont mind paying out of pocket for small stuff but want to be covered if things get bad, and I want to do it legally. I thought that the time to get 2018 insurance closed on 2017-12-15.

Appreciate any thoughts!

-—”It sets it to $0. The individual mandate is still in effect, just with no penalty.”

Doesn’t that seem to leave it as a “placeholder” for future use, no?

I suppose that’s the most they could do in order to get the whole thing passed?

Repealing the Individual Mandate turns Obamacare into a voluntary federal program. The vast majority of Americans will choose not to enter Obamacare, which means they won’t pay into it. So while Obamacare has not been repealed, it has been greatly weakened.
