WASHINGTON A federal judge sharply rebuked the National Security Agency in 2011 for repeatedly misleading the court that oversees its surveillance on domestic soil, including a program that is collecting tens of thousands of domestic e-mails and other Internet communications of Americans each year, according to a secret ruling made public on Wednesday.
The 85-page ruling by Judge John D. Bates, then serving as chief judge on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, involved an N.S.A. program that systematically searches the contents of Americans international Internet communications, without a warrant, in a hunt for discussions about foreigners who have been targeted for surveillance.
The Justice Department had told Judge Bates that N.S.A. officials had discovered that the program had also been gathering domestic messages for three years. Judge Bates found that the agency had violated the Constitution and declared the problems part of a pattern of misrepresentation by agency officials in submissions to the secret court.
The release of the ruling, the subject of a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, was the latest effort by the Obama administration to gain control over revelations about N.S.A. surveillance prompted by leaks by the former agency contractor Edward J. Snowden.
The collection is part of a broader program under a 2008 law that allows warrantless surveillance on domestic networks as long as it is targeted at noncitizens abroad. The purely domestic messages collected in the hunt for discussions about targeted foreigners represent a relatively small percentage of what the ruling said were 250 million communications intercepted each year in that broader program.

Is this a tacit admission from the NY Times that todays FISA memo is dead on accurate?
Yes. They’re like Pravda you have to learn to read between the lines.
The real headline is:
Our Law and Order Firewall is Made of Crate Paper.
Yep, if the next Democrat presidential candidate ever traveled to a hostile country, that would raise grave concerns about possible collusion. We will need to get the entire IC on that candidate as soon as the Dem primaries are over. The integrity of our system is at stake!
Something else to keep in mind: presumably their Elliot Ness’s did everything but give candidate Trump a prostate exam.
If they had found anything substantive you can be sure it would have been trumpeted across the alphabet news and by Her Heinous.
From what I remember, all we heard about are his complicated taxes, and I imagine most billionaires don’t short form, and his appreciation of the fair sex, and what red blooded American male doesn’t?
So all that trouble and law breaking and they shot blanks.
They have to be punished. They have broken one window after another with impunity and practically dared federal LEOs to do something about it. LEOs, you know: the Effa Bee Eye?
Aw, cmon! Everybody does this all the tahm! Where you guys been?
Interesting question.
Sometimes when I want to find an old post (years old), I search Eddie01 and come text string.
It comes up at the top of the search.
“Heres a court that decides whether or not its OK for the govt to spy on its citizens and it almost always says yes?”
Just wondering who FISA refused to investigate — any moehammedan-Americans in that select group?
“Heres a court that decides whether or not its OK for the govt to spy on its citizens and it almost always says yes?”
And worse yet, the “Just Us” department uses information to get the secret warrants to spy on us that’s a political Party’s Opposition Research.
If Trump fails to fix this, his Presidency is at risk!
For context: article date is 08/22/2013.

BINGO - "everybody does it" so it's a nothingburger AND we should pick up liberal elite's concerns on the issue and take care of those - since they're the only one's who matter... You're right dragnet... the New York Times stay true to form.
Perhaps we the people should form our own secret court. Star chamber?
If W eventually gets caught up in this, I can’t say I’d shed too many tears.
Give a beaurocrat an inch they will abuse it to the max. They can’t even stop at the 1 mile marker. FISA should have been shutdown in 2011. Oh, wait, who was Pres., who was Sec of State? Never mind.
Time for real judges to do their duty and order charges brought against the people who lied to the court. Arrest now, their names are a matter of record. Stuff and cuff, the songbirds will sing.
Even our maximum security prisoners love their country and support the military. They did wrong and are being punished, freely admitting this they still love America and hope to be free one day to return to a life as a freeworlder. Put these traitors in the general population at the max closest to them, won’t take long for them to start talking.
This is a great opportunity, as we know. In the past those like this judge, and the IGs who tried to expose the corruption were suppressed. Now our government should be giving green lights to all of these investigations. My God, it’s hard to remember now how crushed, as a White Male, I felt by the life enforced on me by the foreign (Marxist) junta that ruled us for 8 years. Except I still feel pretty crushed. I’m not the man I was before the catastrophe. I pray God that I may be renewed.
BTW, if I get to live long enough to see this corrupt revolution falter and fail, it will be worth it to have lived through it. I just feel bad for our comrades who fell when it looked like there was no hope.
I’ve long thought that the US and the Russian and Eastern European people have been suffering under our own brands of political, largely Marxist domination. Russia (Soviet Union) cratered in 1990. I’ve wondered, what will be OUR crash, to get rid of the Marxist parasite? US and Russia are locked in an historical dance. We should be better friends with them.
I have absolutely NO proof, but I believe that the 2012 Presidential Election against Romney was a trial run for 2016.
My guess on Mueller is that this may be the escape hatch that saves his reputation and hide. He should disband the investigation and drop the charges against all parties. Taking another road will only lead to an external investigation of his team which is obviously corrupted. He can lay this at the feet of Comey/McCabe and others and walk away a hero.
A lot of these judges just might be in the coup.
