Last iconic 'immigrant crossing sign' disappears (it was stolen)

While politicians are embroiled in a polarized national debate over immigration, an iconic road sign cautioning drivers near the San Diego border to watch for migrants running across the highway has quietly disappeared.

The "immigrant crossing" signs have become obsolete, said Cathryne Bruce-Johnson, a spokeswoman for Caltrans. The transportation department stopped replacing the signs years ago because it constructed fences along medians to deter people from running across highways.

The last sign, which stood on the side of Interstate 5 near the San Ysidro border crossing, vanished in September.

"It's gone," Bruce-Johnson said. "Caltrans crews did not remove it, so it's assumed stolen."

Yeah, those signs were real.
There also use to be a line of border agents sitting on what looked like bar stools in the middle of northbound I-5 right before Camp Pendleton. I guess to look into cars? Or to scare illegals? I always thought it was very very odd.

Fences work? Democrats admit that fences work? Alert the media to toss this down the memory hole.

Yup. Saw them for years as a lad in San Diego (Specifically one on the 805 South near Main St in Chula Vista)

Racist Video Game Incites Anger

May 1, 2006 - By Jonathan Silverstein

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=1910119&page=1

There's a video game making its way around the Internet, and many who have come across it say it crosses a line.

"Border Patrol" is a Flash-based game that lets players shoot at Mexican immigrants as they try to cross the border into the United States. "There's one simple rule," the game's opening screen states, "keep them out ... at any cost!"

The game first surfaced in 2002, but amid the national uproar over illegal immigration, it has reared its ugly head once again.

"This was created by someone who had a racist agenda," said Brian Marcus, director of Internet monitoring for the Anti-Defamation League. "The person who made it intended that the message be racist and meant for it to spread hatred."

"Border Patrol" upsets many immigrants' rights groups, as well as others. But the game is nothing new, as hate groups and those just looking to ruffle some feathers have long used Flash-based games to spread messages of hate.

In "Border Patrol," players are told to target one of three immigrant groups portrayed in a negative, stereotypical way as the figures rush past a sign that reads "Welcome to the United States." The immigrants are caricatured as bandoleer-wearing "Mexican nationalists," tattoo-touting "drug smugglers" and pregnant "breeders" who sprint with children in tow.

The sign contains an American flag on which the stars representing the 50 states have been replaced with a Jewish Star of David, and a small sign that appears below says "Welfare Office" with an arrow.

"Extremist groups are always looking for new ways to get their message out," said Marcus, "and there's a lot of talk about how, when they make these games, they get a lot of attention."

I think so too. I remember the first time I saw one, I did a double take. Thing is, they were there because it is exactly what happened. They would run across the freeways. It was so scary when you would see them hauling butt, knowing some poor schmuck might hit them and it would be the end of their life, the schmuck’s.

In a world with honest journalism the article would read: Last iconic ‘invaders crossing sign’
