It seems that most of their advertising comes from the Ad Council and PSAs with a few local ads thrown in. And they run the same PSAs/Ad Council ads over and over and over — ad nauseum — each commercial break.

Laura probably gets paid atleast $10 million to $15 million a year for her FOX News show, I would probably just quit my radio show too

Some talk hosts retiring because of age and a shrinking talk radio market (Imus, etc). Cumulus and iHeart declared bankruptcy. A few talk hosts passed away—on the left, Alan Colmes and Ed Schultz; on the right, Jerry Doyle.

Streaming can lead listeners to some good shows, like Howie Carr, afternoons.

Progressive talk really went away (mostly).Soon the few stations left switched to sports, oldies, etc because there weren’t enough syndicated hosts for liberal talk to fill a lineup (plus bad ratings). So prog talk fans listen to podcasts or streaming of Stephanie Miller and Norman Goldman.

In many places it’s migrating back to the way it was in the pre-Limbaugh days, with talk radio and news dominating the format and all the talk radio hosts being local personalities.

All too often those local hosts are lawyers. Small market stations these days all run automation or all-syndicated schedules. There is no farm team to produce the next crop of hosts. No place for the next Rush Limbaugh to get his start.

Could be that any money
these companies make are from music stations they also own (and even that can be drying up).
Shows like Rush are good buys for national advertisers, even if ratings are down. Premiere/Clear Channel (now iHeart) paid Rush $50M per year for 8 years.

But when renewed a couple years ago, the figure and length of contract was not revealed. He’s had to have lost quite a bit from the $50M per year.

“I don’t like Ingraham’s smugness or sarcasm.”

When I listened to her on radio 10 years ago, I was shocked at how ultra bitchy she was sometimes — and to her own staff. Nasty, nasty, nasty. I think she toned it down the last few years.

I heard Michael Medved is leaving the Salem radio network, and will continue his show online somewhere.

It does make you wonder, will AM radio survive longer term.

re: “It does make you wonder, will AM radio survive longer term.”

Why pick on “AM”?

You guys probably don’t know that in some of the bigger markers, like DFW (Dallas-Ft. Worth) the AM flame-throwers also have ‘outlets’ on the FM band in form of Ibiquity’s digital ‘IBOC’ over-the-air protocol or format.

Probably links on her web site.
As it stands now her show is on a “Laura 365” deal for $6 per month or $50 per year but maybe certain segments of recent shows are free.

http://www.lauraingraham.com/

Indeed on the page just now they have one “freebie” segment. (I don’t know if she’d make the whole show free as a podcast. No ads...but need to pay...)

from her site:
Wednesday, November 14, 2018
Guest Lineup
Newt Gingrich - 50th Speaker of the House of Representatives and historian. Author of the NYT Best Seller Trump’s America (2018) and Is American Democracy in Crisis? (November 6, 2018).
Roger Stone - Republican strategist, opposition researcher, and author of Stone’s Rules (2018).
Richard DeNapoli - Former Broward County GOP Chairman and current State Committeeman.
Freebies
‘Democrats Don’t Care Whether Votes Are Legal Or Illegal’ - Newt Gingrich joins Laura to discuss the midterms and voting problems in Florida and Georgia
JOIN LAURA 365 TO ACCESS THE FULL SHOW COMMERCIAL-FREE

No I didn’t know that.

But clearly there are changes with technology changing, internet, podcasts etc entering the mix .

Also I’ve heard younger people just don’t listen to AM stations, and their listening to FM music stations is well below listenership from years ago.

The radio business seems to be in a transition right now.

The radio business seems to be in a transition right now.

As the news director of a big AM station once told me "we lose ten listeners a day through the obituary column."

Doesn’t she adopt a foreign kid about once a week?

I think radio is being impacted by the cord cutting that TV is suffering.

I can’t listen to Rush during work hours. And during the commute hours I can catch a few minutes of a show. But, if you put it on Podcast, I can listen to it whenever and I can binge listen if that suits me better.

And, I don’t think I have Laura OTA in this area. Give me a podcast, and I can listen. Drive up her numbers.

Well, with people passing on, and new listeners not tuning in, how do radio stations survive? Their main revenue source is selling commercial time. If audience declines, income goes down.

Maybe radio will survive by going online and the subscription model.

But then again, I can think of certain hosts I listen to know, for free on AM, that I would never pay to hear in another format.

re: “The radio business seems to be in a transition right now.”

I made this ‘prediction’ years ago now, that regular ‘broadcast’ was doomed because of the proliferation of LTE/4G/5G/wireless broadband and the wider choice a listener audience has over the standard over-the-air broadcasts ... in fact, I do my own ‘broadcast’ via a low-power FM unit to a Sony Walkman and listen while doing outside yard work. Some of the Youtube talent I subscribe to is mainly ‘talk’ so it is an easy fit to listen-only versus listen/view.

Meh... Never cared for her anyway.

I’ll never forget hearing her and Ann Coulter, on air, talking sh!t about Sarah Palin during the 2008 election.

I was done with the both of them at that very moment.

I wondered how long anyone could keep up that breakneck pace. If her TV show panned out, I knew it wouldn’t be long before the radio show would simply have to end. She replaced Brian Kilmeade here a few years back, and I really grew to admire her brainpower and quick wit. Who will be available now? It is all Sports otherwise, except for Glenn Beck, no thanks.

I’ve quit watching her show because she is too friendly with the swamp. I am angry at the dems and she’s telling them how she loves them. Too many smug dems without her smugness. She is part of the swamp if you ask me.
