The more fundamental question is why is "amassing weapons" considered a crime?

It's not, unless one is a two-time felon.

Beck was a two-time felon.

saying that we do not know, and that others should not be too quick to judge (especially in light of early leo statements that beck may not have killed the deputy), is not 'bilge'. your post is typical, nonthinking silliness from a partisan. even now it's too early to judge, yet you mouth off as if you're god.

no longer applies to the armed bureaucrats. In reality it's worse than that. It is a "special" crime to kill any government employee. Are they better than the rest of us? According to the law - yes they are! This is very reminiscent of the Fascist laws passed in Italy in the 30's (and still on the books) you can go to jail for arguing with a cop there.

Read the whole article. Beck Killed Kuredjian based on analysis of the round, trajectory, eyewitness statements, and Becks own statement to negotiators. All independant. Done. Beck=Cop Killer

Just what is the purpose of a search warrant if its not to search ? Are search warrants invalid if there was nothing there ?

With your background, if anyone can provide confirming references that Beck was a convicted felon, you can.

You would be doing those of us who have been a little disappointed in the truthfulness of the feds in the past a great service to provide a date of conviction, court, judge, defense attorney, sentence, where the sentence was served, or any other details that would help confirm the felony. If he was a felon, this story ends there. If it can not be established that probable cause existed for a "high risk" search warrant(i.e. he was not a convicted felon), then this will go down in history compared to Ruby Ridge.

I am convinced the information on the specifics is an email away for you. If you can provide it and I can confirm it, I will send a $50.00 donation to FreeRepublic in honor of your efforts to find the truth.

Do you think the amount of force used was really needed? The whole thing just reeks of another grandstand play by an agency know to be notorious for high-profile shootouts. I won't argue that maybe Beck was a felon in possession of "a" gun; still why didn't law enforcement stake him out and grab him when he went to the market? They planned this little raid for at least a week. Why stage a major paramilitary operation to try to "corner" the guy in his own house where he may have had many guns? He sure as hell could't carry concealed rifles on a trip to the local supermarket, now could he? Piss-poor police work coupled with trigger-happy BATF cowboys = major snafu, destruction and loss of life. Its not like this kind of crap hasn't happened before. Congress needs to take a close look at the paramiliatry nature of federal law enforcement, tout suite.

The laws allowing enhanced penalties for crimes against law enforcement officials are passed by legislators, whom we elect.

If you don't like the special status, you ought to vote for different legislators.

Good luck at persuading your fellow citizens to think as you do.

Why none, of course. As soon as Beck fired the first shot, the ATF got free reign to burn and destroy the entire block - then remove the evidence before independent verification. They need provide no answers to the American public. If the ATF carpet bombed the neighborhood, it would be Beck's fault and we would be conspiracy nuts for questioning their methods. < /exasperation >

This is a joke right? You actually think that my vote (or anyone else's for that matter) makes any difference? A vote is not input on how the government is run. A vote is merely an illusion that you have some control over the behemoth.

PS I did vote for different legislators, but they never seem to get elected

By 1990, Beck had begun racking up a string of arrests and convictions. He was convicted at least three times and ordered to serve a total of 12 years in
prison, said Supervising Deputy U.S. Marshal William Woolsey, a spokesman for the federal marshals office. It is unclear how many years he served. 

According to law enforcement and court records, Beck's first conviction occurred in 1990, for receiving stolen property--a Remington shotgun and a
.25-caliber Beretta handgun. He was also convicted of grand theft, firearms violations and fraudulent use of someone else's credit card, on which he had
charged more than $1,300. He was sentenced to two years in state prison. 

In the years that followed, Beck was arrested numerous times: on suspicion of possession of firearms, receiving stolen property, carrying firearms in public,
impersonating a police officer and being a felon in possession of an assault weapon. He was again sentenced to prison, this time for four years, records show. 

In late 1992, Beck was...convicted of first-degree residential burglary with the intent to commit larceny. Court documents say he broke into a trailer. That time,
he was sentenced to six years in state prison.

Why should you have to confront someone who is stockpiling guns? Nothing illegal about it as long as the paperwork is complete.

Believe it or not, MOST search warrant services go down quietly. And there are some issues involved in arresting the guy on the street (he DOES get a phone call, gee, might he have a compadre hide the evidence?). Additionally, this guy was probably carrying a pistol all the time. Nabbing him on the street--yeah, then you'd be screaming about the cops recklessly endangering innocent bystanders by "provoking" a gunfight in a crowded area.

Feel free to light your votive candles before your picture of St. Beck and prostrate yourself before his holy image, just don't try to be taken seriously by us grownups.
