Israeli Cities Ordered To Ready Bomb Shelters

By Mazal Mualem

Ha'aretz Daily Correspondent

The Union of Local Authorities (ULA) on Thursday ordered the heads of the local municipalities to prepare public bomb shelters. The move came following re-assessment talks with security forces, which were held in light of the current tension between the United States and Iraq, and the possibility that Israel will be the target of an Iraqi retaliatory strike in response to an American invasion. ULA Chairman Adi Eldar sent a letter to municipality heads, requesting that they hold tutorial sessions with Home Front command officers, and they check the operational level of the shelters in their municipality. The municpalities were also ordered to ensure that they have adequate gasoline reserves, that the backup systems are in working order and that they had adequate numbers of staff.

They would but one of the rubber bands on their GIANT slingshot broke during testing last week so they have to settle for the medium one and that'll only reach as far as Israel.

"They can't strike us"

Somethings may have changed over the past 10-12 years. We'll just have to wait and see.

I must agree. I love the Bush policy against Iraq, but we have to strike when saddamn doesn't expect it. Otherwise, he'll(saddamn) develop the use'm or lose'm mentality, hide in Saudi Arabia while his double gets nuked and he initiates the worst nightmare of all. Granted that's the worse case scenario, but realistic in this new world we live in.

and the possibility that Israel will be the target of an Iraqi retaliatory strike in response to an American invasion. Will someone please explain the logic in this? If we bomb Irac shouldn't they in return try to strike us?

Several responses:

First, you make the mistake of using "logic" and "Iraq" in the same thought. They have a history of illogical warfare.

Second, Iraq can hit Israel (and wants to), but not us.

Third, Iraq knows they'll lose if we do invade (which I don't think will happen, but let's run with it). They'd launch on Israel exactly because they hate Israel so badly, and before we can get to their missiles.

Fourth, anybody's attack on Israel will be seen as a green light for all other Arab states to attack Israel. It might well ignite a regional war against Israel.

Fifth, an attack on Israel, coupled with the likelihood of U.S. assistance to Israel, causes a cessation of regional oil exports to the U.S.

Sixth, it's a wedge between us and Europe. They get to choose between Middle-East oil, and support of the U.S. France, for one, has not been shy about thumbing their noses at the Iraq embargo.

There's more -- but you see that it makes sense.

Seems like a pretty ominous signal. Any bets on when the first sorties run?

Afghanistan will look like a "bump in the road" as we continue our mission. Iraq and Iran will be a tougher assignment, but necessary to get the the heart of all this "rubbish". Lebanon has been a God forsaken haven for the worst of the worst....We've got to hit them, and hit them hard, again and again........hoo-rah!......

You do have a valid point.I don't believe they have missles that can reach us however they may have some sleepers around. This is truley interesting that they arrested the ex iraqui soldier living in salt lake as a precaution about him being a danger to the US.hmmm, should we read into that further or just watch and see.

Reminds me of that scene...

...in any western where the good guy shows up in the saloon doors and all the patrons scatter except for the villian.

i think israel=USA is more like it (as opposed to USA=israel)there is a subtle difference. israel is our representative/surrogate in the mideast. our stories are forever one because we have the same values...religious freedom and independence for each and every one of our citizens.

If it were up to me, and it's not, and that's probably a good thing, but if it were up to me I would establish a policy that said,

Any attack on Israel will be considered an attack on the United States and will be treated accordingly. If the state which attacks Israel is already in a state of hostility with the United States, we will increase our military campaign an order of magnitude.

On the other hand, anyone who wishes to negotiate with Israel in good faith on valid issues affecting their respective states can count on the United States to help. We believe in peaceful negotiation and will do everything we can to support the same.

That's what I'd do.

It's probably too simple, though.

Shalom.
