PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Church, community and political groups in Oregon and Washington are demanding an end to what they call 'hate radio' and have called on a station owned by billionaire Paul Allen to drop talk show host Michael Savage.

Savage, whose home base is KSFO in San Francisco, is syndicated on more than 350 radio stations nationwide. He is featured on KXL radio in Portland during the key afternoon drive-time slot, 4-7 p.m.

"The content is an unbroken stream of hate and chauvinism directed against women, people of color, liberals, immigrants and in particular people of Middle Eastern heritage and people of the Muslim faith. We condemn this message of hate..." said Tom Nelson, spokesman for the Coalition Against Hate Radio.

The coalition consists of the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, the Interfaith Councils of Greater Seattle and Greater Portland, the Islamic Societies of Southwest Washington and Portland, the Multnomah County Democratic Party, the Muslim Educational Trust, Oregon Friends of the Middle East, Jews for Global Justice, the Catholic Archdiocese of Portland, Centro Cultural and several other churches and groups.

It planned a 10 a.m. Wednesday news conference in Portland. KXL broadcasts news, talk, weather and traffic 24 hours a day to an audience from northern Oregon to southern Washington.

Tim McNamara, the station's general manager, said he had received seven letters of complaint about Savage's show, five of them identically worded. By contrast, he said, he received "hundreds" of letters supporting the station's decision to air the show.

"I have absolutely zero advertiser resistance," he said.

McNamara also said he offered Savage's critics airtime on his station, but they declined.

KXL, founded in 1926, is among billionaire Paul Allen's holdings. Allen also owns the Portland Trail Blazers basketball team, the Seattle Seahawks and the Rose Garden in Portland.

"The message that KXL is sending to communities of color, immigrants, and in particular to all people of Middle Eastern ancestry and to Muslims, is that you are not wanted in this country, that you have no value and that you should not expect any respect here," said Mona Goode, spokeswoman for the newly formed Coalition Against Hate Radio.

"That is a message that we must actively and vocally oppose," Goode said.

Members of the coalition said they will ask corporate advertisers to withhold their support from KXL until the station drops Savage.

"We're going to engage with the corporations that advertise on the radio station and appeal to their sense of corporate responsibility," Goode said.

"In a sense, Michael Savage has done us a favor. He's kind of united the coalition in and of himself," she said.

Michael Nank, a spokesman for Vulcan Inc., Allen's Seattle-based holding company, said Tuesday that Savage's views are his alone, and do not represent the station or its corporate owners.

Other than that, he said, "KXL is the broadcaster, and any day-to-day decisions are addressed by the station there."

I wish I could get him here on the "Other Left Coast"

He's on WABC AM 770 8 til 10 est. If you have a good antenna I'm guessin' you should be able to get him in Ct. If you can't get him in the air, they have a Real stream at www.wabcradio.com. And he's on the www.talkradionetwork.com Windows Media stream at 7p est. and replayed the next day at 2p. Personally, I hate streaming. It's sooo iffy. But if it's all ya got it beats nuthin. He's on KSFO in San Fransicko but I think they don't stream him. Probably because of a conflict with the affiliates I'm guessing.

Uh, Mona? That's why there is a disclaimer at the beginning of the program that the views expressed are not necessarily shared by the station or it's advertisers.

See that knob on the radio, Mona? The one that says "Power"? Push it once for "on", and then another time for "off".

Moron. But then, you're only practicing free speech by attempting to muzzle Savage's right...right? Moron.

Could you please tell me someone who you don't consider a "blowhard"?

Sure. Rush, for one. He does a blowhard imitation on occasion, but there is enough humor and humility behind it to get him off the hook. Bill Wattenburg, on KGO in San Francisco. He approaches blowharditute, but is actually more crotchety. Plus, he really knows stuff. Sean Hannity is a down to earth type. Brian Wilson, on KSFO in S.F.

. . . is actually more crotchety.

Ha-ha! Given the choice, I'll take the "blowhard" over the "crotchety" every time!

Thanks.

I can get 770 WABC in the early mornings in my car but I can't get it in at work (Hartford). I'll try it over the 'net sometime when I get a chance.

LOL! I thought the same thing about when Michael S. talked to them! You just don't want to mess with me or you will regret it! Not a quote, but I got the message loud & clear ... I hope the DNC and hangers-on got it, too!!

It will be interesting to hear what he has to say today (Thursday).

You don't see humor and humility behind Savage? Wow, we must be listening to different shows. Rush is much better now that he isn't talking about golf, cigars and taxes constantly. For awhile it was quite obvious that he was sitting on top of 50 million. I haven't heard Hannity, but I hear he is good...

Suspend the First Amendment until it has been amended to outlaw "hate speech". The Founding Fathers never intended that the First Amendment would permit "hate speech".

An advisory council of politically neutral university presidents, feminist leaders, homosexuals and transvestites, minorities, and child advocates should be chosen to rewrite the First Amendment. ( And recind the Second Amendment).

This is a move that was started by those wonderful Oregon Democrats a couple months ago at their convention.

The closest thing to what you might call "hate radio" that I have ever heard was from a little station that goes by the callsign WWCR, that may or may not still broadcast on what most people call shortwave.

I haven't heard anything else from the right on mainstream talk radio that comes even close, but from the left there have been some that get right up there into those heights.

The northwest leftists have every right to displace those shows they do not like by producing their own shows and getting them played on stations.

I wonder why they don't just do that?????????

I will need to read your post carefully and consider before replying to it specifically... BUT one thing stands out.

Coalition Against the Coalition Against Hate Radio

Clearly this is Ca-ca! LOL Inspiring, and I insist upon being a part of this great new organization! :)
And remember, there is no such thing as hate radio (conservative). It is only Outrage Radio. US being outraged at the left's outrageous, hateful, insane actions.

If these left-wing nutjobs are upset over Savage, he must be doing something right. I listen to him every night here in Houston, he speaks the truth: Language, Borders, Culture!

"Boycotting the sponsors", huh? Sounds like something evil capitalists would do, not these lovely do-gooder liberals. Their plan is to whine and whine until they get their way.

Being a resident of Washington State on the west side of the Cascades, it is invigorating to listen to Savage. I'm surrounded by liberal nuts wearing Birkenstocks, hemp jewelry and chanting new age mantras.

Seattle is a beautiful city, but they are a bunch of PC nuts.

Savage is an Oasis.
