Sesame Street to introduce HIV-positive Muppet by Bernie Woodall

New York (Reuters) - Sesame Street will soon introduce its first HIV-positive Muppet character...(snip)

OMED: This approach is heterophobic in nature and is also biased with respect to other diseases. Congress should immediately pass legislation which requires Sesame Street to include in their cast puppets with diseases predominantly suffered by heterosexuals. There should be a diabetic puppet with a bad heart....(snip)

An anti-smoking puppet with lung cance...and a psychotic mommie puppet who forgets to take her meds and drowns her five puppet children in her bathtub, then flushes a rubber duckie down the toilet.

He he. How about A radical muslim muppet who yells Jihad and blows Israelis and Americans to bits so we can educate people that Islam is a religion of peace

Why not have a Muppet with leukemia, or diabetes, or asthma? These are diseases children are much more likely to have than AIDS and should be addressed far more often than AIDS. This smacks strongly of a political agenda.

It is relevant to mention that this is in South Africa, not here, and their AIDS issue is quite a bit different than ours...
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sesame Street will soon introduce its first HIV-positive Muppet character to children of South Africa, where one in nine people have the virus that can lead to AIDS

The upbeat female Muppet will join "Takalani Sesame" on September 30 for its third season on the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

The rest of the op/ed piece is a riot "There must be a puppet named "Sniffles" that has a temperature of 101, diarrhea and a runny nose. While on camera, it should vomit every few minutes."

Yes, but the article goes on to say that the Muppet will eventually be brought to the US as well as 8 other countries.

Oooooooooh. Good point.

The last Sesame Street character I remember dying was Mr. Hooper. They did a good job handling it then, from what I remember. Wonder what will happen with this character.

"Schneider said talks are under way to introduce an HIV-positive character to U.S. viewers."

Although you are right that this does not set anything in stone, it sounds to me like the decision has pretty much been made already by those who control the show.

You are correct in what you said concerning Africa's AIDS epidemic. I agree that having a character with AIDS in S. Africa and other African countries would help those in that continent. However, here in the US it's different.

I just wanted to make sure it was known up front what we are talking about - South Africa - since the poster didn't include that very important bit of info. Folk have a tendency to go off half-cocked around here! [gasp] myself included if the moment is right!
