Freeper Help Requested- Notebook Computer Purchase
Me | 7/31/02 | Raybob

Posted on 07/31/2002 9:10:17 AM PDT by RayBob

Freepers, your help please.

I am looking to buy a CHEAP notebook/laptop computer that I can cart around in my briefcase. Don't need to have a lot of bells and whistles as I will use it primarily for word processing, but I want to be able to access the internet. Any suggestions for reputable resellers of reconditioned equipment?

Also, I am requesting recommendations for brands/models.

Hard to beat the mail order Dells and Gateways. Both give good value for the buck. Or Frys if you're lucky enough to live near one.

"Cheap" and "Notebook" in the same sentence is rather an oxymoron.

But my niece starts college next month, and we bought her a refurbished one. Search the web for 'Refurbished laptops". You will be surprised to see what that term really means.

If you do not need the latest games, etc. (And who does!?) and you want basic telecomming and word processing and spreadsheets and not the latest dazzle, it is pretty silly to shell out four figures.

And I would take an "obsolete" Pentium II or 3 anytime before the newest, lastest Snaileron.

I bought a Dell, but the hard drive was so terribly loud that I sent it back because I wasn't getting any helpful answers from their support line. It took over two months to get my account credited. Then, I bought a Toshiba Portege, which is wonderful. They have very good support, too. I previously had a Toshiba that lost the hard drive when the Chernobyl virus was going around, and they replaced the whole computer within three days by mail. I don't know why I ever tried Dell.

I've always favored the Timex Sinclair 1000. You could probably pick one up at a used computer store for less than 10 bucks.

The latest Consumer Reports rates Dell highly in terms of service/support/features. Besides you can order your own specs (without the expensive 'bells and whistles').

Usually you can order the specials of the week and then downgrade off the monitor or mouse or keyboard ect to get the actual computer for a great price.

Very pleased with Dell.

"Search the web for 'Refurbished laptops". You will be surprised to see what that term really means."

Why- what does it really mean? What do they do, wipe the harddrive and wash the casing?

I won't play any games on it; have a desk top if I want to do that. I wanted an inexpensive computer to literally toss in my briefcase and cart around with me. (Also to get my FR fix if my wife is on the desktop computer, but that's another story.)

Try the Dell website for lease-returns. I'm writing this on a CSX-500 I've had for 2 years, and I LOVE it!
You can have this same machine for $600 or thereabouts.

The Apple iBook has a great Operating System, has the best word processor available for it and is super simple to get mobile internet connections with it. You can walk into about any Starbucks and get a high speed wireless connection with an AirPort card. For only $1,119, its a pretty good deal. And if you don't want to shell out the $$$ for a Microsoft word processor it comes with Apple Works for free. AppleWorks will do about 99% of what most people need in an office package.

As a bonus, you can edit movies on it from your DV camcorder if you have one, without any special equipment or expensive software.

Go onto Ebay and under Computers and Peripherals, look at the Dell Site for reconditioned computers. I have a Dell Latitude and am very pleased with it.

Good Luck!

10-4 on the iBook, I'm working on one right now. Excellent machine. You won't be disappointed and $1200 is a great price for what you get.

Here is a great deal. These aren't really refurbs, my sales rep told me they bought the whole lot (300 then, only 80 some left)from a failed company.
