A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day 08-06-02
LadyX and Billie

A Few of FR's Finest.....
......Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues;  salute
and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new
word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who
are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which
we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.  I
can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands
of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!

And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

~ ~ FREEDOM'S WORTH IT ! ! ! ~ ~
by LadyX

Those early colonists who established the concept of a land free from England's harsh and restrictive rule surely kept that cry in mind!

From Lexington to Concord -
from Trenton to Valley Forge -
Charleston to Savannah,
and echoing in the halls in Philadephia
where the Continental Congress was shaped;
men who crafted the birth of a Republic
kept the idea foremost in their minds.

More than 200 years later,
we still repeat the cry;
America a bright and shining star
among the nations of the world.

One of our Free Republic members chose that screen name
to denote her own beliefs - that a nation dedicated to God
and His principles could grow and prosper.

It is with enormous pride that today we present
and honor our very own Freedom'sWorthIt !!!

Freedom'sWorthIt

Member since August 7, 1998

Knowing of my long association with Freedom'sWorth it, Billie asked for my help with the lead-in.  Nothing could please me more, being privileged to meet in her in person in November 1998.  In Charlotte, North Carolina we had a gathering of CAROLINA Freepers, FWI traveling from Raleigh, NC and I from South Carolina to attend.

Our friendship grew and deepened through e-mail and Freep mail, both of us Christian and committed to promoting a conservative America.

She was among those who attended the 1998 March of Justice in Washington, D.C.  She is one of THE most compassionate, passionate and well-spoken among our many Freepers.  Her expressions on a broad range of subjects are without fail from the heart and beautifully articulated.

It is with pleasure that I add first my own recognition to you, Freedom'sWorthIt!

My thanks to you, LadyX, for being our Guest Writer today; I knew you would do a beautiful tribute, for I've seen the expressive way you have with words. You know that you'll be called upon again!

My thanks to you, FWI, for all that you do and all that you are.....you are truly one of FR's Finest, and I hope you enjoy your day in the !
~ Billie

Re #27..

I once attended a wedding in Pretty Place, NC and that photo reminds me of it so very much. The wedding was in an open chapel and no matter where you sat you saw those beautiful hills and mountains and flora. It was very aptly named, Pretty Place. I certainly have never been any place prettier. It was in SW NC.

Good morning everyone. Another beautifully done tribute to one of our finest.

Today I switch over from dsl to cable, so I will be off line for awhile. I am hoping to be back soon, blitzing around the internet in warp speed. :-)

God's blessings on all of you. Have a wonderful day!

For some very strange reason, I cannot seem to send you FReep mail this morning. Every time I try to answer yours and hit send, it freezes. I finally have gotten some of my other mail 'sent', but yours won't go yet - short answer, long answer - I can't send one to you.

It must be that figment thingie. :) I wanted you to know I'm trying to answer your mail. : (

Silt-filled turret of USS Monitor raised from Atlantic

By SONJA BARISIC, Associated Press Writer
August 5, 2002   6:10 pm

Excerpt:

HATTERAS, N.C. -- The silt-packed turret of the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor was raised Monday from the Atlantic floor, nearly 140 years after the historic warship sank during a New Year's storm.

The turret, the largest and last retrievable artifact, was raised at the end of a heavy cable attached to a crane on a 300-foot work barge.

A Civil War-era American flag fluttered from the lifting frame and water poured out of the turret as it hung over the ocean before it was lowered onto the barge deck. Workers and divers aboard the barge cheered as the turret was swung to a cradle, and a Navy helicopter carrying military photographers hovered overhead.

The turret-raising was the climax of a multi-year salvage operation run by the U.S. Navy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which controls the underwater sanctuary where the wreckage is located.

I guess Mother Nature preserved this thing in the mud all those 140 years!

Excerpt:

Film producer D. J. Roller takes a look at what it takes to film at a depth of 234 feet in the Atlantic Ocean, where the USS Monitor has rested since she went down in a gale on New Year's Eve, 1862. See also Saving the Monitor, by John Broadwater, manager of the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, who leads an ongoing effort to raise and preserve key parts of the deteriorating ironclad.
