New strategy for "DumpDAVIS" FReeps: multiple "eGray in a garbage can" MOBILE STRIKE FORCE teams
"Dump DAVIS" FReep ideas: statewide "Super SIMON" street theater puts Davis-in-a-Dumpster, NEW logo ^ | September 1, 2002 | RonDog

Posted on 09/08/2002 1:21:44 PM PDT by RonDog

In my PREVIOUS thread, I promoted the concept of "DumpDAVIS" street theater FReeps.

I am now proposing that we modify this concept to form a "Minuteman-style" MOBILE STRIKE FORCE that we can deploy on a moment’s notice – as soon as we find out where Gray Davis will be.

The heart of these mini-FReeps will be the "eGray Davis" prostitute costume, which can be worn by ANY (preferably male) FReeper. Everything else is secondary, IMHO. Nice to have, but not vital.

Davis
.
WILL WORK
FOR...
Bribe$!!!

www.eGray.org
www.FreeRepublic.com

Our message is:

"Gray Davis is for sale to the highest bidder – so you cannot TRUST him."
As we learned from the anti-Bush/Simon rally in Los Angeles last month, ONE good powerful visual image may be all that is necessary to break through the media clutter. The RAT opposition may be able to out-NUMBER us, but we can out-THINK them!

I now have TWO (2) "Beavis" rubber masks, and should have two (2) "eGray Davis" costumes ready in about a week, which could be worn by virtually ANY male FReeper. I will also soon have printed two (2) big professionally designed 2-foot by 3-foot signs that say "eGray Davis… Will Work for Bribe$" and two big "Hazardous Waste" garbage cans, for the prostitute characters to stand inside.
Voila. Instant FReep! (In duplicate - or MORE!)

We will also soon have a dozen 3-foot by 4-foot "Davis-in-a-Dumpster" Styrofoam cutouts, plus two complete Superman costumes - to promote "S is for SIMON," at least one "GRAY Reaper" costume - to promote "Dioxin Dumpers for Davis," and MANY other anti-Davis signs – all of which would be a good complement to the "eGray" character, so that we can ADD to the overall effectiveness of our "DumpDAVIS" FReeps with as many warm bodies that show up.

But all that we NEED for a successful "DumpDAVIS" mini-FReep is a little advance notice.
Here is a list of some possible "DumpDAVIS" FReep dates and venues:
Tuesday (9/17) – noon to 2 pm – Simon/Camejo debate at the Beverly Hilton
Saturday (9/21) – 11 am to 1 pm – "Latino Summit" at the Westin Bonaventure (L.A.)
Saturday (9/28) - to be determined - California GOP Convention in Orange County
Monday (9/30) – 10 am to noon – Bill Simon speech at the Nixon Library

Saturday (10/5 or 10/12 - ?) - proposed statewide Sacramento FReep

"Dump DAVIS!"
If you hear of ANY public event where Bill Simon - or preferably Gray Davis - is scheduled to attend, please PING me ASAP!

It appears that now the Green Party MAY NOT be protesting Gray Davis on TUESDAY (9/17) from noon to 2 pm at the Beverly Hilton. The Green Party campaign manager is trying to notify HIS troops to instead be at a protest on SATURDAY (9/21) morning from 11am to 1pm for a “Latino Summit” at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown L.A.– where both Simon AND Davis are scheduled to appear.

See my post #141 from:
"Dump DAVIS" FReep ideas:
statewide "Super SIMON" street theater puts Davis-in-a-Dumpster, NEW logo

As I understand it though, 2-3,000 members of the NCM media expo will still be there on TUESDAY, the debate between Bill Simon and Peter Camejo will still be there, and SOME protesters from the Greens and RATs may still be there, so **I** still plan to be there.

While this Beverly Hilton FReep may be lightly attended, it will be a good DRESS REHEARSAL - IMHO - for the concept, and an excellent opportunity to get some "live action" photos to use in promoting FUTURE "DumpDAVIS" FReeps – on FR and to the press.

Spoof site no joke for eBay

A parody Web site called "eGray," which takes aim at California gubernatorial incumbent Gray Davis, has drawn the attention of auction giant eBay--and its lawyers.

The "Gray Reaper" is certainly welcome!!

I plan to arrive before noon at the Beverly Hilton, on TUESDAY, September 17.
The debate between Bill Simon and Green Party candidate Peter Camejo starts at 2 pm, so that will be the END od the FReep.

Parking is expensive ($6) but SAFE, in a covered, guarded facilities - at either the Hilton or the adjacent Robinsons/MAY department store paking lots.

I have checked out the venue, and suggest that we meet on the NORTH side of Wilshire, in a small park on either side of the intersection of Wilshire with Trenton Drive.

From USA Today, at:http://www.usatoday.com/tech/webguide/hotsites/2002-09-05-hotsites.htm:

California's rough-and-tumble gubernatorial race is getting ugly, especially online. EGray, a parody of the popular online auction site eBay, paints Gov. Gray Davis as a public official selling his political favors to the highest bidder. The 'BribePal' button actually takes you to Davis' contribution site. (There's a cease-and-desist order in here somewhere.)

Where these slogans say "auction prices and bargain prices, I would like to suggest that they be Xed out and Southeby's prices added. EGray should also list founders as Willie Brown and David Roberti. They perfected the shakedown while they were respectively, Speaker and President Pro Tem of the California Assembly. Not coincidentally, Gray was then Chief of Staff to Governor Brown, the younger.

A researcher could find an interesting Sacremento Bee article if they used key words, Continental airlines employees/Roberti/Willie Brown/Gray Davis/bankruptcy. Hopefully those key words will reveal an early 1980s story.

DESIGN CALIFORNIA'S NEW 25-CENT COIN!
THE NEW CALIFORNIA QUARTER!As Slate.com points out today, the new state quarters are horribly ugly. And guess what? The state of California is now soliciting design ideas for its own butt-ugly quarter. The common complaint about these unattractive coins is that taste-blind bureaucrats just throw together a bunch of elements -- a trumpet, music notes, a pelican and a map of the Louisiana Purchase in this horrid example. So let's keep it simple, for the sake of art. The staff of LA Examiner humbly offers our own design.

California: Davis-Simon debates stall.
Only a pair of meetings scheduled for television.

Sacramento Bee via Oakland Tribune ^ | September 8, 2002
Posted on 09/08/2002 6:16 PM Pacific by John Jorsett
SACRAMENTO -- Chances are dimming that California voters will see much of Gov. Gray Davis and Republican challenger Bill Simon in live televised debates before the Nov. 5 election, at least not in prime time or in English.

The two campaigns have not discussed specific debate terms directly, and the Democratic governor appears ready to agree to only a pair of face-offs, one at noon in early October and another on the Spanish-language network Univision at a time to be determined.

"That's going to be a disservice to just countless numbers of voters in most regions of the state who will never get a chance to see Mr. Simon and Gov. Davis side-by-side, live and in person in their living room," said Stan Statham, president of the California Broadcasters Association, which has helped stage past gubernatorial debates. Four years ago, candidates Davis and Dan Lungren met four times on television between July and October, an unprecedented number of debates for a gubernatorial election.

But the governor's race featured no incumbent that year. This year, Davis has a lead in the polls, millions of dollars of campaign cash for paid television advertisements and presumably less incentive to offer the challenger free shots at him on the tube.

Davis campaign spokesman Roger Salazar said the governor has less time to meet an ambitious debate schedule this year compared to 1998 because of his official duties. Davis must act on nearly 1,000 bills before a Sept. 30 deadline, and then has but five weeks to spend on the campaign trail, Salazar said.

Simon's campaign has suggested up to six televised debates staged throughout the state, with specific, predetermined issues to be discussed at each. It also has called for the inclusion of Green Party candidate Peter Camejo. The Davis campaign has rejected both notions.

California Republican Party adviser Sean Walsh said Davis is ducking debates generally and avoiding a live joint appearance in the early evening, when the most viewers would tune in.

"Davis is not a good debater," Walsh said. "Davis' problem is the more you see him on TV, the less you like him."

Salazar suggested that it is Simon who should duck the debates.

"He wants the exposure, but given how weak his grasp is of the issues, I'm not really sure that when he gets into it that he's going to want more of what we have to deliver," Salazar said.

Including Camejo or any other third-party candidate is "out of the question," Salazar said, noting that none of the minor-party candidates has come close to achieving the 15 percent rating in public polls that serves as a threshold for presidential debates.

"Camejo from our perspective is just a Republican pipe dream," he said.

"They're trying to build him up because they know they can't win on their own."

Statham said it is important that the debates be carried live, and be broadcast in the early evening hours -- not at noon on Oct. 7 (a Monday), as Davis has proposed.

"If you're between 'Days of Our Lives' and 'The Young and the Restless,' two things happen to gubernatorial debates: you don't get as large an audience as you would hope, and the audience you do get is not the audience that goes to the polls and votes," he said.

Candidates would speak English in the proposed Univision debate, but their voices would be largely dubbed over by Spanish translations.

Despite the four debates held in 1998, subsequent analysis showed that they may not have been as helpful to voters as hoped. Only in San Diego and Sacramento did viewers see all four meetings live on broadcast television. No Los Angeles station -- broadcast or cable -- carried the campaign's last two debates in September and October.

A May 1998 poll by the Public Policy Institute of California showed 85 percent of voters believed debates would help them evaluate candidates. But in a follow up survey taken after the third 1998 debate, three out of four voters said the televised match-ups had little or no effect on them...

You are welcome!

FReepers may have been aware of www.eGray.org for quite some time, but it is only now breaking through into the mainstream media.

Here is a short quip from http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/news/local/4029750.htm:

Posted on Sun, Sep. 08, 2002
Simon has a deal for highest bidder on eGray,
Web site parody of Davis
Going once, going twice . . . a little campaign humor. Seeking to liven up a governor's race where both candidates are turning off prospective voters in droves, Republican Bill Simon's camp last week launched eGray, a knockoff of the popular auction Web site eBay. The site (www.e-gray.com) spoofs Gov. Gray Davis as a craven fundraiser, willing to let donors bid on public policy. It lists 10 ``California Laws for Sale'' to the highest bidder.

``EBay and eGray have something in common -- their products go to the highest bidder,'' said Simon campaign spokesman Mark Miner. ``It's a fun way to keep the public informed of the pay-to-play tactics of the administration.''

The Davis camp, which has sent out more than a few faxes spoofing Simon, denies that campaign contributions affect the governor's policy decisions.

Speaking of craven fundraising, eGray isn't above it. The site links to pages where one can donate to the Simon campaign.

IMHO, the lefties in the media cannot HELP themselves: they HAVE to write about this!
The eGray parody website is TOO GOOD to ignore!

They are limited to throwing in such digs as:

Speaking of craven fundraising, eGray isn't above it. The site links to pages where one can donate to the Simon campaign.
The DIFFERENCE, as those bozos certainly know, is that Davis is solicting campaign contributions IN EXCHANGE FOR political favors.

Giving to a politician is not inherently wrong.

Still, they say that ANY press is good press, as long as they spell your name right.

Which they SHOULD do - soon, if enough of us contact to let them know that the PROPER SPELLING of the www.eGray.org url is:

Thanks!

From ANOTHER liberal media outlet, the San Francisco Examiner, at: http://www.examiner.com/frank_gallagher/default.jsp?story=n.gallagher.0906w

To the highest bidder?
With two months to go, the governor's race is getting vicious.

Republican challenger Bill Simon this week unveiled a Web site -- www.egray.org -- that hits incumbent Gov. Gray Davis where it hurts.

Surfers who pull up the site are greeted with a dead-on parody of Ebay.com, offering undue political influence for sale at auction prices. Clicking on the various links takes viewers to the texts of news articles documenting what Simons says are examples of Davis' pay-to-play style of government.

"This site clearly illustrates the many instances of pay to play," said campaign manager Rob Lapsley.

"Gray Davis is selling the state to the highest bidder, and we thought we'd have a little fun with it."

Ebay.com's senior director of communications said the on-line auction behemoth wasn't exactly enamored of the Simon site, but had little recourse available.

"I think our legal team has looked at it and determined that there's not much we can do," the director said.

The Davis campaign did not return phone calls from the Examiner.

E-mail: fgallagher@sfexaminer.com

Frank Gallagher's political column appears every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in The Examiner.

eGray is vicious?
LOL!

I like the classic and cheap tactic of placing people in trees and on balconies near Davis when he speaks and dumping bags of Monopoly money at him. Even better if you have someone in a Davis costume running around grabbing up all the "money."

I think theater and parody work really well in California. I remember the Senate race in 1986 when Alan Cranston was dead in the water against Ed Zschau, and then ran those hilarious "Wolfman Jack" parody ads poking fun at Zschau's flip-flops on many issues. Those ads were killer. This kind of stuff would be especially good in this race, because Davis is such a stiff and would look even more ridiculous trying to respond in kind.

The "eGray" site is just beyond brilliant. I've emailed it to dozens of people all over America. It may be the best campaign move I have seen in 30 years of politics. It is going to generate reams of positive free media for Simon, while highlighting Davis' pay-for-play administration. It takes off on a California icon in eBay too, but in a respectful way that should actually please the folks at eBay. Great, great work!!

LOL again. Thanks RonDog. Looks like you all are having a pretty good time in this race. And high time our side learned about drama - the media is desperate to not fall asleep and any "theater" almost guarantees coverage. However, the slip on the site URL probably is not accidental. Reproters may want the fun of reporting, but they certainly don't want the public masses "sharing" the joke. (on them :)

"I like the classic and cheap tactic of placing people in trees and on balconies near Davis when he speaks and dumping bags of Monopoly money at him.
Even better if you have someone in a Davis costume running around grabbing up all the "money." - Dems_R_Losers
EXCELLENT idea!!!
Thank you!

To: RonDog; All
the three urls that work are

http://egray.org
http://e-gray.org
http://e-gray.com

egray.com takes you somewhere else. The above three are the ones that were available when the site went up -- according to the Simon people.

Great... that makes two of us so far. I suspect Ron is looking for us to set the date. Is the Capitol the best bet ya think? Guess I could volunteer to wear a costume if someone can get it up here. Gotta pass on the hooker outfit however... don't have the legs for it :)

Looks like we have a full plate for September, that's for sure.

Definitely the capitol area! I have a megaphone and I know how to use it. I can also make a few cute signs. For example: "Gray Davis is a WHORE!" How's that? For victory & freedom!!!

Ya gotta excuse me.... I live down wind from the Capitol by a few blocks... intoxicating!

Do you propose a Dump Davis Freep STATEWIDE on the same day? Or are we talking progressive Freeps? Sounds to me like you'll need to set the dates in either case.

On behalf of the Sacto Area folks, I would urge each FreepFest to include a Voter Reg table as part of the state-wide challenge put forward by Saundra Duffy. Because of Voter Reg deadlines, the second or third Saturdays (12th or 19th) would work.

Considering the Sawgrass Rebellion rally is September 30th, a Monday, the October dates might be better for us up here. I have to agree, Saturday is a day we can get people out and we have all week to promote it on talk radio.

Bottom line, I think you need to be the one setting the date(s) and who might come to support the efforts?

I am still pondering the particulars myself. :o)
What I would LIKE to see is two-fold:
1 - FReepers from all across the state gather together for one massive "DumpDAVIS" FReep in Sacramento, ideally on a Saturday, some time in October.
(We are at the "request tor comment" stage now....)

2 - FReepers form all across the state hold their OWN local mini-FREeps, perhaps with someone dressed as the "eGray Hooker."
(This could be in conjunction with voter registration efforts, but it is primarily directed at getting media attention anytime Gray Davis appears anywhere...)

My immediate goal is Tuesday (9/17) at the Beverly Hilton.

Next up is Bill Simon's speech at noon on Monday (9/30) at the Nixon Library.

Also important will be a FReep of the proposed L.A.Times-sponsored debate between Davis and Simon - perhaps the ONLY such debate - tentatively set for Monday afternoon (10/7).

After THAT, I am open to a Sacto FReep.

It would be nice to set the date as soon as possible, though. Working........

From the Sacramento Bee, http://www.sacbee.com/content/politics/story/4329318p-5351592c.html:

The buzz: Parody Web site may be going, going, gone

By Kevin Yamamura -- Bee Capitol Bureau
Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Monday, September 9, 2002

Politicians love to parody.
Gov. Gray Davis, for instance, is known for his video productions shown at the annual legislative roast that include parodies of the television shows "Behind the Music" and "The Sopranos."

And now GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon has a parody of his own, a Web site called eGray that parodies the online auction site eBay. The site, www.e-gray.org, links several of the Democratic governor's policy decisions to past campaign contributions.

But this parody may come to an end.

Officials at eBay Inc. are reviewing the site for possible trademark infringement. "We're concerned with any attempt to play off of eBay's reputation or eBay's look and feel," said company spokesman Kevin Pursglove.

He said there have been numerous parodies of eBay's site before, but most have lasted for only a few days.

The site does contain a small disclaimer at the bottom, explaining that it "is in no way connected with eBay Inc." Still, Pursglove said, "we're reviewing what all our options are, including our legal options."

From KXTV (News10) in Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto http://www.kxtv10.com/storyfull.asp?id=2486:
Simon Campaign Website Draws Ire of Online Auction House
Bill Simon's campaign could be in trouble over a web site that takes potshots at Governor Gray Davis. It's called eGray, and the online auction site eBay isn't too happy about it.

The site, which closely mirrors the graphic look of eBay, claims Governor Gray Davis is selling his influence to the highest bidder. The site offers mock auctions of political favors by Davis.

A spokesman for eBay said the Simon website infringes the company's copyright, and noted that the Simon campaign never asked for permission to duplicate the look and feel of eBay.

The online auction house is currently looking into whether or not it can take legal action against the Simon campaign.

OUCH!

The Washington ComPOST weigh in with THEIR spin, in the excerpt from the FULL TEXT at Bill Simon's Online Bid For Governor Backfires:

A dark cloud seems to be dogging Bill Simon, the California GOP nominee for governor. Already beset with questions about his business dealings and campaign acumen, Simon now is threatened with a possible lawsuit by -- of all groups -- the Internet company eBay.

The company says the Simon campaign's new Web site -- E-Gray.com -- may violate trademarks it holds on its online auction site, and it's contemplating legal action. The site, launched last week, is modeled after eBay but it parodies Democratic Gov. Gray Davis's prodigious fundraising and alleged tendency to favor big donors...

Their SPIN CYCLE is on "maximum," but playing this as a negative for SIMON (!) will not fly. :o)

Politics makes strange bedfellows

Can Greens and Freeps do a quicky coalition?

Freeps are a cheerfully manic bunch of loony right wingers who hang out at FreeRepublic.org.  Lo and behold, when checking the logs for this blog, I see they've linked to me.  Huh?  So, I investigate.

Turns out the California Freeps despise Gray Davis, Democratic Gov. of California, and will happily do whatever it takes to defeat him in November.  So, they posted info from here about Green plans to protest Gray Davis' refusal to debate Green Party candidate Peter Camejo, thinking, heck, maybe we should join those wacky Greens in protesting Gray Davis.

Works for me.  We no doubt think the other side is wacko, however we agree that Gray Davis is for sale to whoever the highest bidder is that day.

Hey Freeps!

"Q. How do you get Gray Davis to change his position on an issue?

A. Tell him the check bounced."

Peter Camejo, Green party candidate for Calif Governor, as quoted by Steve Lopez in the LA Times.

LOL!

Actually, it appears that the FReepers will be doing this anti-Davis protest WITHOUT the Greens!

As reported here previously, under pressure from the folks at the "New" California media (just like the "OLD" California Media) not to make their boy Gray look bad in public, the CA Greens have WIMPED OUT of their protest of Gray Davis at this Simon/Camejo debate.
Thank you, "bob - at - polizeros dot com" for posting the original information about this event, though.
The NCM folks were apparently going to run this as a "stealth" debate - for the oddball indy-media members only.

No press release, no fanfare.
They do not even announce the debate on THEIR OWN website!

Side note: I had to convince the Events staff at the Beverly Hilton that it really WAS going to be held at their facility.
It is. In the Whittier Room. Capacity 160. From 2 pm to 3 pm.
What kind of "media" group ARE these guys???
Not to worry, though. Gray Davis WILL be protested on 9/17.
BTW, bob - the url here is www.FreeRepublic.COM - not .org, but thanks for the plug!
