Col. David Hackworth just was on H&C, arguing against the pending invasion of Iraq. Claimed that because our chem warfare outfits may not work, that Bush is "sending America's blue collar sons to die", and that it is really about oil.

There's a lot going on with Iraq. It has "oil" as a component, and it's silly to ignore that. With the second largest reserves of any OPEC country, Iraq can't be thought of without this petroleum compenent. Either this oil will push prices down, or lack of it could cause prices to skyrocket. I've been worried how this balancing act could be carried out by George W. and the U.S. after Saddam is out.

For instance, Pakistan is probably as great a terrorist threat as Iraq is. Could we possibly imagine invading Pakistan and trying to occupy and pacify that population. We somehow think that the Iraqis will appreciate us and that this nation-building exercise will be a cakewalk.

I think that the oil-equation makes our power-elite think that this war is worth the risk. The law of unintended consequences predicts that this will be, if not Vietnam, at least 5x Bosnias or 10x Afghanistans--neither of which has an exit strategy yet either.

I admire George W. for being willing to enter this nest of vipers, known as the Islamic Middle East. To plant ourselves squarely among the "vipers" and to forcefully stabilize this region will dramatically change our history, the political future of Islam, and the world.

Hackworth also stated that Saddam couldn't have a nuclear weapon for another five years. That statement is clearly over the top. He has nothing to base that on. Again, he is out of his area of expertise and perhaps over the hill.

Ok, here is my respone to the CL on antoher thread, hate me if you want! :D

I used to like Mr. Hackworth but some of his latest stuff has made me not like him very much. I wont go into it in detail, but I have had people BEG me to go to Washington and say I was sick from the Gulf War. When I told them I was not sick, they said "You will be!"

When I told them I could not in good conscious lie they said that I could get GOvernment benefits and a paycheck to say I was sick, they said I could get a lump sum disability check and collect a monthly allowance, I told them to screw.

I called them thieves and they said "Someday, you WILL come down with cancer and be on our side."

Col. Hackworth agrees with them, perhaps I am cynical but I was instructed by a Congressional Liason to LIE about having "Gulf War Syndrome" and collect benefits. You may not believe me and thats OK but it happened to ME and I will not forget it or forgive it.

You may think I am wrong, but until I FORCEBLY told them to leave me alone, they cam by my store EVERY week to tell me I had GUlf War Syndrome and needed to sue. Col. Hackworth agrees with them hence I think he is an idiot. I have always loved the guy but I can not ignore reality.

Are you depressed? Its GULF WAR SYNDROME!!! Do you have arthritis? Its GULF WAR SYNDROME! Do you have cancer? Its GULF WAR SYNDROME! Do you drink a case of beer a day and have ill effects? GULF WAR SYNDROME!!!

Its a load of bullshit is what it is. I do think that some people became sick because of inhalation of fumes and exposure to negative environments and they have been taken care of.

Of course, some of you will disagree with me and think I am fabricating the truth but ask yourself, what if what I have said happened, really did? Of course, if you dont believe me then it does not matter, but what if what I said, REALLY HAPPENED?

It would change your minds, and it DID happen only I am a normal person and dont tape these meetings.

It is a F'ing travesty and I would go over there again IN A SECOND!!!

What a rant... thats why I dont respect Col. Hackworth anymore.

The message boards at Specialoperations.com are heavily populated with current and former military, particularly Special Operations types. They have nothing good to say about Hackworth.

Has been ever since he was drummed out of the Army 30+ years ago.

Why?

I read his book the title of which escapes me now and thought it was pretty good. I respect what's he's done and does for our military but half the time I don't have a clue about what he's trying to say or the point he's making.

Thier 2.1%(To us.) oil supply would be easier to get if we let them off the hook.

If we ended all the sanctions, we would get more oil. This is NOT about oil. As a mtter of fact, hostilities will HURT oil profits. Just so you know.

" If you don't trust any politician, why do you bother to vote "

Firstly, If I don't vote, then I have no right to complain, so, I vote.

I did not vote for Mr. Bush or al gore because I was not impressed with either one and I do not intend to vote for that clown bill simon. I cannot believe how stupid his campaign has been run. That man had so many issues on his plate against davis and he blew it.

I cannot vote for davis, so, I will pass on the Governor's race. but, I will vote on the other portions of the ballot.

FYI, I am registered as a "declined to state" and hold no party loyalty. I no longer vote for someone who has an r after their name because most of them are RINOs.

I place my faith only in Christ.

Thank you very much for posting that personal account. It speaks volumes about what some people are up to regarding Gulf War Syndrome and the fact that Hackworth is even allied with them speaks volumes about what kind of man he is.

If you don't vote for governor, then please do not complain about whoever is elected. I will keep your comment in mind.

Faith is in Christ, trust is in good leaders. There is a difference.

As much as I respect his past service and heroism... he and his whinny complaining voice and his cute little black turtleneck dicky is getting more than a little tiresome...

Most guys will block out or attempt to forget the painful years of their lives....This guy thrives and supports himself discussing in on TV or in books.

Over and Over and Over

To each his own.

What they're planning definitely won't be expected. Everyone will be surprised. And the outcome will be just as quick and decisive as Afghanistan.

I think hostilities would boost oil profits in the short-run. Everyone who has reserves could charge more for those.

Long-run, a stable Iraq brings prices down though, and helps all. I personally agree with Rush from 10 years ago, that the Gulf War was not only about stopping agression but about maintaining the "free flow of oil at market prices"

Who has more terrorists running around in their country AND has an a-bomb? Pakistan. I am not against the Bush policy on Iraq, but let's not kid ourselves, the US needs the region's oil to flow freely. A democratic Iraq, with US bases located there, makes a big difference in many areas, and not just in stopping terrorism.

http://www.glorywatch.com has articles on this subject.

What is so foregone concluded already is that once America's march on Baghdad begins, Iraq will throw her worse at Israel and Israel will fry Baghdad and other Iraqi cities into the ground. This is not open to debate. You will see it very soon now. There is nothing short of Bush retracting his war talk to stop it. It is as certain as the sun coming up in the morning. Do you realize how certain this is? Do you realize how soon we will see on the news outrageous stories of millions dead? Has it grasped you yet? You cannot debate it. It is already a done deal. The best thing for Bush to do once Israel is struck is pull back all our troops and sit out while Israel does her thing. Anything else will put our troops in harms way of Israeli nukes.

Hack is right. There will be a lot of dead folks to WMD. The problem is, Saddam will survive while his peasants fry.

Bless you for being a person of integrity. Most people would find a way to steal from the government (i.e. the taxpayers) and it is refreshing to know there are still many honest, decent Americans out there. You made my day!

Yes....He tried to take the situation in 'Nam and transpose it to another war. he predicted that US troops were undertrained and ill equipped to play tag with the Republican Guard. He said the sands would be soaked with American blood. This guy is another Colin Powell. I read his book (the first one) and it was a good book on 'Nam but he's living in another world. Thank god for his service.....but it's time to move past the old days.

With respect, placing your trust in mankind is the same as trying to climb a straight ladder without a wall to support you.

Remember what mom and dad told you about strangers, all politicians are strangers unless you know them personally and they are, contrary to popular belief, out for themselves, not us. Don't believe it?, how about the $4,900 increase they gave themselves last year ( in secret), while giving social security recipients a $32.00 increase? A Republican congress I might add.

You are correct. If oil prices rise to high, the consumerism will mandate less oil usage.

Your analysis is dead on and I agree we have oil in mind but I do not think Oil is why we want to take out Saddam.

I hate to get into the Realpolitik of the world but Pakistan has a Military Dictatorship that is friendly to our country. Dont laugh to hard, but they are TRYING to maintain normalcy. I am not happy that they have to maintain it at the threat of violence but as the Libs say, "You have to go for the consensus."

At least Musharaff(Whatever. :D) is attempting to hold on to order. His country is pretty much Pro-Taliban and as we all know thier INtelligence services MADE the TAliban.

We have to look honestly and know that Pakistan will NOT pose an immediate threat. They WILL try to covertly F us over but as a NUclear Power, they are trying to appear as a normal player in the world scheme of things.

IMHO India is a perfect ally and we might have a new cold war on our hands the fact that CHina hovers like a vulture will bring BOTH countries to us.

I am not pr war against Iraq but I think I might have changed my mind. Iraq attempted an assassination of a US PRESIDENT.

Iraqi intel was involved in the first WTC bombing. So, if they were involved in the first, why not the second?

Iraqi intel TRAINED people to hijack planes with simple weapons to crash into US installations. Sure, there is no DIRECT link, but camps to do the exact same thing exist in two places in Iraq.

Of course, there is no DIRECT link to Iraqi intel, but EVERY Intel group uses the same cop-out and while it might be a matter of law, we all know it is BS. Hell, even we use the same excuse..

SO, Iraqi trained Al Queda agents use Iraqi methods to blow us up but there is no PROOF they did so. LOL! Hell, if they train there and develop strategy there to use against us and Iraqi Intel is found to be DIRECTING them... it is no good because they say the agents have been fired. DO you belive that? I dont.

When I first started posting this, I was actually up in the air about attacking Iraq. Now, to hell with it... Lets bring it on!

Just the fact that Sadam ordered the assassination of George Bush is enough to make me want to go kick thier ass.

NO US PRESIDENT SHOULD EVER LET A REGIME THAT ATTEMPTED TO ASSASSINATE THE PRESIDNET TO LIVE!!! PERIOD!!!
