Since there have been repeated messages to become poll workers/watchers in the upcomming Nov. 5 election, I thought it would be useful to have a common point for poll watcher sites and information.

This would be particularly important in the three problematic florida counties. Then of course there is South Dakota's ongoing voter registration fraud investigation...

So for my part, here are some florida links to help stop the fraud:

The most important areas would be what is refered to as "gore country". If your protested in 2000, you can poll watch in 2002.

I have been asked to be a pollwatcher here in So. Ind., 8th District. What would I be doing? What authority, if any do I have, etc.?

A poll watcher is a witness in the event of fraud. Such as you are there to see of any mischeif or box stuffing. You are also there to make sure the ballots do not disappear for any period of time which would allow for tampering.

You can also make sure the poll workers keep candidates and their signs the designated distance AWAY from polling places. (in the event of serious shenanigans you could call the media.)

If you are ambitious you could take a hand counter to count the number of people at your station. If the votes case exceed the people in attending then that is a cause for concern. In the event of a court challenge your testimony could make a case.

Consult your local supervisor of elections to make sure your are an official poll watcher.

Watchers were critical in miami in 2000. They became the eyes of the nation when the doors were closed.

It is vital to have as many as humanly possible.

Thanks for your help. I think I'll be over possibly 4 or 5 different polling locations, all at least 8 miles apart. We live in a rural community. I don't know how it will work out, but I'll give it a shot.

The only thing I have heard about any shenanigans is a Demcratic candidate has turned in 250 or so newly registered voters. There's just barely that many in our area. I have brought up the idea they need to check these newly registered voters with cemetery records and recent deaths.

make sure that your county allows video cammeras. Some places limit what you can have in a polling place.

I would suggest makeing sure the local Supervisor of Elections knows you are a poll watcher. This way if there is a law suit from EITHER side. (ala algore) you name will be provided as law suit discovery and will be interviewed as to what you saw.

Also, consistency is key, take a note pad and pen. Keep a log with time notiation for what you see and note any discrepency. Even your notes could be crucial.


Also also, if possible keep to one precinct.

I'd like to be an election judge. Who do I contact?
Contact either the Republican or Democrat Party chairman (depending on your party affiliation). These can be found in the 2001 County Officials Book. The counties are listed alphabetically. Several offices are listed for each county. The last two entries are the Republican and Democrat County Chairmen (i.e. their name and telephone number) for that specific county. All the information that I am giving you here is for the State of Florida. First off, the poll-watcher, is a person who is designated by the Supervisor of Elections to be able to watch over the election polling place for either a political party or an individual candidate to insure that nothing wrong goes on during election day.

To become a poll-watcher in Florida, you must be a registered voter in the State and county in which you live. You must submit (in Writing to the SOE) your wish to become a poll-watcher. This must be submitted before 12 NOON, October 22, 2002. If you are approved to be a poll-watcher. You will be notified before the election.

On election day, when you report as a poll-watcher, your name will be checked-off by a poll-worker. A list of all designated poll-watches for each individual precinct is giving to the precinct poll-workers.

No candidate, sheriff, deputy sheriff, policeman, or other law enforcement officer may be designated as a poll-watcher.

Poll-watchers are allowed inside the polling room as observers, BUT SHALL NOT OBSTRUCT THE ORDERLY CONDUCT OF THE ELECTION.

Now, as a poll-watcher you must furnish you own materials and necessities. IMOHO, you should have (as a minimum) the following: Voter Complaint Forms, (get either from the SOE office or over the internet); Proper knowledge of how the Voting Machine works; If posible, a listing the voters in the precinct(as a precinct committeeman I am allowed this list); I feel that any poll-watcher should at least go to the poll-worker classes to get the working knowledge for the proper procedures that they must follow.

Please remember, you are the second line of defense from voter fraud inside the polling place. But, you are the first line of defense for voting fraud OUTSIDE the polling place. And believe me, I have seen, complained and have had removed (and sometimes arrested) people that have tried to commit voter fraud.
