STUDENTS EXPRESS LOVE FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT

By MARTI TAYLOR-DN Staff Writer

Students from Red Bluff High School joined in downtown Red Bluff today to show support and compassion to local law enforcement following the tragic death of Red Bluff Police Officer David Mobilio earlier this week.

Students from the sophomore leadership classes, student government and peer partners organized the event that included leaving fresh flowers on the bell outside the police department, as well as congregating on the four corners of Main Street, Oak Street and Antelope Boulevard. The carnations were a donation from the Gazebo Floral and Gift Shoppe in Red Bluff.

Those involved carried signs supporting all local branches of law enforcement and event wore buttons that read RBHS loves RBPD and CHP. The buttons were a, "symbolic gesture with a heart surrounding the green and gold writing."

"The kids wanted a way that they could show their support and love to the law enforcement of Tehama County, this is what they came up with," said Cindy Haase.

Several officials also attended the gathering including RBHS principal Patrick Gleason, RBUHS Superintendent Kathy Wheeler and Red Bluff City Council member Larry Stevens. Stevens thanked several organizers of the event for the positive display of solidarity towards the officers that protect Tehama County.

Haase also remembered Mobilio on a personal level, as a family friend. "This is such a tragic and horrible thing to happen, especially in Red Bluff." said Haase. "Dave was a fun, caring and generous man. I am truly saddened by his loss as is my entire family."

When asked what Mobilio would have thought of the outpouring of affection, Haase said that he would have liked being remembered as a, "wonderful, giving and fun friend."

"I don't think Dave would have wanted us to sit around being sad for him. He would have wanted us to catch whoever did this and we that's where we need to focus our energy," said Haase.

Students also spent another day of mourning at the Butte College campus in Chico. Flags at the college have been flying at half mast on the campus since the incident. Mobilio was a, fall 1995, graduate of the 91st basic law enforcement academy offered at the college.

Lisa DeLaby a representative of the program said that students in the program have been in shock since hearing the news. "They just can't believe that one of their own is gone," said DeLaby.

Residents are still being asked to replace their porch or outside lights with blue bulbs as a symbol of support to Tehama County law enforcement and to the Mobilio family. Blue bulbs can be purchased at most hardware, home improvement stores and some grocery stores.

This is a follow-up, and request for assistance. Without going into details, even though I am in Arizona, I am involved in the ongoing investigation of the death of this young officer. Please read these stories, and print out the composite drawing of the "witness", particularly if you live on the left coast, with attention to Seattle area.

Also, please check your local papers for news of any assaults or murders of Police Officers, Judges or Prosecutors in your local area, and post any information here, or email me.

I once worked at that gas station where Mobilio was ambushed and murdered.

I hope they catch the poisonous reptile that did this...

Looks similar to the guy they were looking for in NC for the abortion clinic bombings , ect. Always thought he was probably far out west when they were scouring the woods for him out east. More wilderness out there.......

We in Sacrmento have gotten our BOL for this Witness. Red Bluff is a small town and is unacustomed to this kind of mayhem, also heard he was the D.A.R.E. officer in the town. Thanks Neil for the heads-up.

BUMP

For those who don't know, Red Bluff is a fairly small city about 30 miles South of Redding In N. California, and about 90 miles North of Sacramento. Redding is about ten miles South of Lake Shasta,

aware of the killing here in Eureka since a few hours after it happened. Our local news covers it and the ABC TV station here is a sister station to ABC in Redding.

BTW...let me offer my congratulations on your low FR registration number...

I meant to add that there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of square miles of near wilderness around Red Bluff for someone to hide in. I say thousands because the nearest metro area to the East is the Northern Salt Lake City Metro area, 600 miles away. Medford in Oregon is some 200 miles north, Sacramento metro area is 90 miles south, the CA coast is, what, 100 miles west?

In all of that area there are only only a few cities of any size, and the tourists and skiers beginning this time of year far outnumber the residents.

Thanks for the info. I wish people would identify the locale on stories from places that people aren't familiar with.

Hiya Travis ... thanks for the bump. Once this investigation is over I'll post the relevant portions of my small contributions to it. It has been an interesting weekend, to say the least. I thought I left all this behind when I resigned my commission from the OHP in the mid 80's .... :)

For JimTorr: thanks for letting people know WHERE Red Bluff is .... as I said in my comments at #1 .... I'm in Arizona and don't know the area .... :)

for tubebender: Thanks for the congrats .... but my LOW number has WHAT to do with anything???? :) .... Actually, I was posting on this forum BEFORE registration was required, almost from it's inception, in fact. But I do thank you for the BUMP up!!!!!! :)
