Run Your Own Country (VANITY of VANITIES - it's a game)
Nation States - Jennifer Government ^ | today | Frapster

Posted on 02/07/2003 11:20:01 AM PST by Frapster

A couple of months ago a friend of mine introduced me to a site called NationStates. The creator of the site built this 'game' he created to promote his book. It's not my intention to promote the book but instead to invite other fellow freepers to join me in creating a nation and moving it to the 'Free Republic' region. I have looked to see if a 'Free Republic' already exists but I do not see one.

Simply creation a nation and then once your nation is created you can then change the region you start out in. Once your nation is created and you're in the 'Free Republic' region you're all set.

Once your country is created you'll be presented with 'issues'. As you make your decisions your country's issues will effect the status of your countrie's civil rights, economy and political freedoms. This is what my country looks like. It's a brand new country and I'm the only one in 'Free Republic' at the moment - but join right in.

You can customize your country's flag, it's motto and it's currency. There's no way to wage war and there's limited number of issues. So if you change your settings to display 2 issues per day you'll run through your issues pretty quickly. You have the potential to see the same issue more than once pretty quickly but it will take a little while (a week or two) to run through them all.

The site can load fairly slowly sometimes. When I created Frapsterland it took forever to complete the creation process but it finally did.

You also have the opportunity to join the United Nations and represent Free Republic as the UN Delegate provided you get enough votes.

The reality is this is a huge waste of time but it's kind of fun to see how people's countries evolve. Give it a try.

I'm there! Now, should I resign as a member of the UN?

I vote that we let EvieIsle stay in the UN to keep an eye on them.

We seem to think alike.

I agree - the text is very left leaning. I just assume that my country is like the US. While the 'world' looks in and thinks 'wow - everyone must be so unhappy there' I smugly sit by and allow my people to be, in reality, happy. ;-)

I can't remember if there were 3 positions to take on that issue or not...if I remember correctly, there were. I chose the middle issue and now my little island is being deforested.

The game really is left-leaning but I'm wondering whether we could accomplish anything by using the UN.

This is great! I'm glad to see so many folks joining in. You know - I don't know how to vote for a UN delegate. Do I have to be in the UN to cast a vote? As far as I'm concerned I'll cast my vote for you (if I can) since you were first in for our region!

Naaa. don't resign unless you want to. I believe the impact of UN resolutions is only on those who are members. I could be wrong.

I don't know if we can affect change in the UN or not. There are thousands of nations so we'd have to have a pretty significant number of Freepers join to make that happen.

I just posted on our Nations.net board that I'm not sure whether the countries have to be a member of the UN in order to elect a delegate or not.

Why would you want to poke me anyway? :)

*poke poke poke* I don't know - just seemed like something to do. ;-) I'll have to join the UN and see what's up.

You are correct, three options on this issue.

The Issue: Prospecting company Nukes4U has uncovered a large uranium deposit in Undead Gods's south-west.

The Debate: "This is terrific find!" claims Nukes4U CEO Anne-Marie Trax. "It will provide an enormous stimulus to our economy and create thousands of new jobs. It's win-win! All we need from the government is permission to bulldoze the rainforest that's on top of the deposit."

This is the position your government is preparing to adopt.

"You've got to be kidding," says Green politician Hack Thiesen. "This rainforest is thousands of years old! This country needs more environmental protection, not less. And to destroy the environment in order to mine uranium that then goes into nuclear bombs--well, that really sticks in my craw." [Accept]

"There's no need for an either-or decision," says the government's Minister for Mining, Clear-Felling, and the Environment. "We can preserve most of the rainforest and allow mining of a small part. After all, think of all the good that the money from this uranium deposit can bring to Undead Gods." [Accept]

The Government Position: The government has indicated its intention to follow the recommendations of Option 1.

Here is my nation

I thought there were 3 choices! It will be interesting to see what happens in your country with you choosing the more 'radical' of the three.

I've been there for a while. I play WWIIOnline and a bunch of us created our own location.

Whats strange is I never fund any of those socialist programs yet it shows that I do. I did fund education a while back though. Maybe thats where it came from.

Heres mine:

The Dictatorship of Widgeo "Piss us off and we will stomp on your butt."

UN Category: Inoffensive Centrist Democracy Civil Rights: Average Economy: Very Strong Political Freedoms: Good

Location: Cornered Rat Off Topica

The Dictatorship of Widgeo is a enormous, devout nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 302 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often. There is no government in the normal sense the word; however, a small group of community-minded individuals juggles the competing demands of Education, Law & Order, and Defence. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Book Publishing, Cheese Exports, and Information Technology industries. The alarmingly racist TV show 'Bigtopians Say the Darndest Things' is a hit, a large-scale revitalization of the education system is underway, the tenet of free speech is held dear, and nudity is frowned upon. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Widgeo's national animal is the elephant, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the dollar.

I'm part of the FReeper Alliance. The problem with the game, aside from it's leftist stance, is that I keep getting the same issues over and over. It's just gotten boring!
