Warning From FOX40 Viewer About Misleading Petitions

FOLSOM -- FOX40 News is looking into a story brought to us by one of you through our Viewer's Voice.

A viewer in Folsom says take a good a look before you sign any petitions.

She almost signed something she was against.

So, was it an honest mistake or is this an example of dirty politics?

Decked in stripes and stars, Aaron Park with the Placer County Republican Assembly handed in 10 thousand Recall Davis signatures to the assistant registrar of voters in Auburn Tuesday evening.

Volunteers say getting the signatures took time but not much energy.

But make sure you're signing what you want to sign.

Belinda Johnson of Folsom says watch out. A petitioner tried to trick her outside a Rancho Cordova Wal-Mart on Sunday.

"I asked him so what's this about and he said we're against raising the tuition at colleges and firing teachers. I said wow, that's important. Have you gotten many signatures? He said, oh yeah and he showed me five pages of signatures," she said.

Johnson took a closer look and noticed the petition she was about to sign was in support of Davis. It was an anti-recall petition.

"I called him a liar and threw the petition at him and stormed out," she said.

Carroll Wills is with the Taxpayers Against The Governor's recall. That means he wants Davis to stay where he is. Wills claims his agency is looking into the Wal-Mart incident but also says it shouldn't surprise anyone.

"The fact of the matter is they are independent contractors collecting the signatures and are being paid for collecting signatures and often they use their own means of getting signatures," he said.

Wills cautions to take a good look before you sign. Those who want the governor out say anti-recall people are simply playing dirty. Copyright © 2003, KTXL

I wouldn't have said a word...I would have gone and commandeered an under-cover policeman an had him investigate and arrest him on the spot...

Besides, the police are mostly conservative anti-Davis folks to begin with. I'm sure there's plenty of them who'd love a chance to pop a lying weasel Davis toady.

Did anyone even complain ti the police?

You wackos are all the same, blame the police for not doing something when they weren't told about it.

I signed the recall petition last week.

Agreed.

Even if you were to accidendally sign that piece of paper it doesn't mean anything. It's just a piece of paper.

If you're concerned about signing a bogus petition, go to www.recallgraydavis.com and download the petition, sign it, and mail it in. The petition can have just one signature and still be counted.

In downtown Sac yesterday, I passed a card table set up to collect "recall" signatures. Now, I hate to stereotype, but the people behind the table were a woman who, quite frankly, looked like a welfare mother, and a slovenly man who looked like a labor organizer. Their sign -- "Recall Davis" -- looked like it had been prepared with a Magic Marker on the inside panel of a cereal box. The whole operation looked sloppy and low-rent. I wouldn't have given the duo much notice, except for reports that there are paid trolls getting people to sign what they think are recall petitions, only to have the petitions thrown away at the end of the day. Of course, anyone who suckers into signing the counterfeit petition now thinks they've signed a legitimate petition, and won't sign another one. The effort will fail, but it's devious, which is why we call him "Gray Devious."

Thanks for the election code cite. I'll cut and paste it, and carry it with me, in case I see the trolls out on the Mall today.

If they are misleading people into signing a recall petition, then they are arguably committing a crime. If they are having people sign the real petition, and then throwing them away, they are also committing a crime.

Be sure to closely scrutinize this stuff. If this is actually happening, we need to insure these people are appropriately punished for subverting the democratic process.

One obvious question, why are we supposed to care what Carroll Wills says about signing the correct petition?

Some jackass on DU was claiming to have recieved petition forms and was going to submit a bunch of bogus names to discredit the recall effort so this doesn't surprise me.

But hey only Republicans do dirty tricks, right?

LOL! This is so predictable. Davis lied to get elected and his followers and he will lie to keep him in. If lying was illegal in politics, Davis would be in jail with many others doing 25 to life on three strikes.

As soon as I heard the Davis team was concocting this pro-Davis petition stuff, I knew they'd be lying to the people signing. I'm not much concerned if people think they're signing a pro-education petition, since the pro-Davis petition has no effect. I'd be more concerned if the lie was that this was the recall petition, which would make people think they'd already signed when they hadn't.

Ran into some Davis supporters last year in LA when we Freeped him at the debate. RonDog, Jessamine, TonyInHawaii, Outraged were among our Freepin' crew. The thugs that carried the Davis signs were all decked out in matching black T-shirts. They were so loud and rude. Obviously paid protestors. They try to intimidate everyone else.

The pro-Davis petition holds no legal weight. A primary purpose is to fool people into believing they have signed the recall petition so that they won't then sign the real one. Please read the following: "Davis reall tactics may be hailed as inventive, ingenius"
http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/Stories/0,1413,206~11851~1439921,00.html

There was a time when this kind of thing was called "dirty tricks" and would quickly bring about resignations. Now in the post-Clinton era an intentional deception of the public is called "ingenius".

The other obvious purpose of the Davis petition will be for public relations -- to wave in front of TV cameras as a counter to the 1,000,000 recall pretition signatures.
