Hijacker Crashed Flight 93 on 9/11

WASHINGTON - U.S. investigators now believe that a hijacker in the cockpit aboard United Airlines Flight 93 instructed terrorist-pilot Ziad Jarrah to crash the jetliner into a Pennsylvania field because of a passenger uprising in the cabin.

This theory, based on the government's analysis of cockpit recordings, discounts the popular perception of insurgent passengers grappling with terrorists to seize the plane's controls.

The government's findings — laid out deep within the report on the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that was sent to Congress last month — aim to resolve one of the enduring mysteries of the deadliest terror attacks in U.S. history: What happened in the final minutes aboard Flight 93?

The FBI strenuously maintains that its analysis does not diminish the heroism of passengers who — with the words "Let's roll" — apparently rushed down the airliner's narrow aisle to try to overtake the hijackers.

President Bush and Attorney General John Ashcroft have regularly praised the courage of those aboard Flight 93, some of whom told family members by telephone they were planning to storm the cockpit.

"While no one will ever know exactly what transpired in the final minutes of Flight 93, every shred of evidence indicates this plane crashed because of the heroic actions of the passengers," FBI spokeswoman Susan Whitson said Thursday.

Thirty-three passengers, seven crew members and the four hijackers died.

Citing transcripts of the still-secret cockpit recordings, FBI Director Robert Mueller told congressional investigators in a closed briefing last year that, minutes before Flight 93 hit the ground, one of the hijackers "advised Jarrah to crash the plane and end the passengers' attempt to retake the airplane."

Jarrah is thought to have been the terrorist-pilot because he was the only of the four hijackers aboard known to have a pilot's license.

Mueller's description was disclosed in a brief passage far into the 858-page report to Congress. Previous statements by FBI and other government officials have been ambiguous about what occurred in the cockpit.

Mueller's explanation was based on the FBI's efforts to decipher the cacophonous sounds on the cockpit recorder and produce a comprehensive transcript, said one official, speaking only on condition of anonymity.

The FBI is convinced it may never know for certain what transpired in those final moments, but Mueller represented the information as the FBI's leading theory, this official said.

The same cockpit recording was played privately in April 2002 for family members of victims aboard Flight 93, and the FBI also provided them with its best effort at producing an understandable transcript.

Some family members indicated afterward they were led to believe that passengers used a food cart as a shield and successfully broke into the cockpit.

The FBI has been loath to publicly put forward a contradictory theory out of sensitivity to the families and because of uncertainty about what happened.

People who have heard the recording describe it as nearly indecipherable, containing static noises, cockpit alarms and wind interspersed with cries in English and Arabic. Near the end of the tape, sounds can be heard of breaking glass and crashing dishes — lending credence to the theory that passengers used the food cart to rush the jetliner's narrow aisle.

Separately, the data recorder showed the plane's wings rocking violently as the jet flew too low and too fast for safe flight.

Intelligence officials believe the likely target for Flight 93 was the White House, based on information from Abu Zubaydah, a senior al-Qaida terrorist leader in U.S. custody who is believed to have played a key role in organizing the Sept. 11 attacks.

Prosecutors have sought a U.S. judge's permission to play recordings from Flight 93 during the terrorism trial of Zacarias Moussaoui, the only defendant in a U.S. case prosecutors have directly tied to the attacks. Moussaoui is accused of conspiring with the hijackers.

The government has said it can link Moussaoui to Jarrah, using a telephone number found on a business card recovered at the Shanksville, Pa., crash site. Prosecutors believe the card belonged to Jarrah and that Moussaoui had called the same number.

Moussaoui has acknowledged allegiance to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida but says he was not involved in the attacks.

I listened to the original news reports live on 9/11 and they never reported that the plane was shot down. There certainly was a lot of confusion those first few hours. The plane was not shot down. The passengers may or may not have entered the cockpit, but their attempt to take back the plane undoubtedly resulted in the plane crashing into an empty field instead of a significant target as was planned.

Not unlike the stuff they did with Jessica Lynch's rescue, and the "the Iraqis tried to return her in an ambulance" bit. I know what you mean.

Nobody saw an air to air missle strike at 30,000 feet in the middle of nowhere? Does that tell us anything?

Silas, the plane wasn't at 30,000 feet. It was much closer to the ground.

Consider this: had the plane been struck by a missile while flying at a low altitude, the wreckage would have been scattered for at least a mile. It wasn't.

Had the plane been hit by a missile at 30,000 feet, the wreckage would have been scattered over half of Somerset County. It wasn't.

The wreckage was contained in a very small area. The profile most closely resembles what is politely known as "CFIT," or Controlled Flight Into Terrain.

That plane crashed with an Islamic hijacker at the wheel. It did not crash with a gang of passengers pouring into the cockpit. It did not crash with Wesley Snipes throwing a hijacker out the door. It did not crash as a result of a passenger named MacGyver making a hand grenade out of his airline meal utensils and throwing it in the cockpit.

I don't ever recall hearing that they gained control of the plane. My impression always was that they caused enough of a disturbance so as to cause the plane to crash. So I guess I'm behind on this one, because what is said to have happened in the article is exactly what I thought happened.

But you never told us what that "other reason" might be.

I agree with you. But of the three scenarios you list, the hijacker bomb is the only one confirmed by the passengers in their phone calls.

Why there? Why then? The fact of the matter is the barbarians were at the gate making for a major distraction. It was only a matter of time before the terrorists guarding the door were overwhelmed and the terrorists inside the cockpit knew it.

Yea, that you don't know what you are talking about. The plane flying much lower than that.

Also, if it had taken a missle hit, there would have been visible damage to the airplane before it hit. All the witnesses reported an intact plane hit the ground.

Sentence 2 contradicts sentence 1.

Not at all. The first sentence says the passengers were taking action. Sentence two says they did not make it into the cockpit. In any case they caused the aborted attempt to hit Washington.

Two Thoughts:

#1- These people gave their lives in stopping the terrorist mission this plane was on, therefore they ARE Heroes.

I am tired of this scum breathing American air. The Mumia-Abdul-Jamal-Kabooki dance he plays from his jail cell bores me.

He's guilty and Ashcroft is incompetent for NOT putting him before a military tribunal.

There are two plausible explanations: The terrorists had a bomb, or the plane was shot down. Everything else requires Costco-size rolls of tinfoil and denial of reality.

The man from mars might have been helping the terrorists, too, but it is pretty damn unlikely, just as all the things you think might be the case are unlikely and totally unnecessary, given what we know about the modus operandi of the other three planes.

Um, hello? Am I reading the same story as you folks? It looks to me like the story says that a passenger uprising ("let's roll") caused the hijackers to abort their mission and suicide the plane into a field. OF COURSE, the passengers were heroic....what am I missing here?

The thing you are missing is that some people are not able to understand what they read.

Then you must also admit to being incredibly ignorant.
The men "rolling" on flight 93 knew the hi-jacked plane was now a weapon aimed at causing mass casualties.They knew they were dead anyway, and while I am sure they also tried to save their own lives, they had obviously decided not to allow even more lives to be forfeited by what they knew was a flying bomb.
The passengers on Flight 93 did not want to die.They knew they would die anyway if they did nothing.They choose to fight for life,their own first, and if not theirs, others who were not already doomed.
I doubt all of them actively participated, but that is, and should remain a subject not open to spurious,casual debate.I have put myself mentally on that flight, and I can honestly say I dont know what I would have done.I wish I could state that I would have joined in the "rolling", but I was not there, and I can not be sure of how I would have reacted in that situation.
Enough heroic people did react, that the murderous terrorists failed to reach their target.
I was alone, online, and reduced to internet and radio reports that day,and I remember what happened, and the timeline and it sickens me that people would dare to spit on the memory of the people of Fliht 93.
I am also ex USAF, and if the USAF had actually shot down a civilian airliner on the CONUS on 91101,it is not possible for that fact to remain a secret, sick conspirancy theory jerks be damned!

So, if the passengers sat in their seats passively the plane would have crashed in the White House or the Capitold Building.

Instead, the passengers did rise up and the plane did not crash in DC.

This does not diminish what the passengers did at all. The hijackers could not complete their plan. Success for the passengers!
