Should a convenience store robber get a lighter sentence because he is struggling with an addiction?

Convenience store robbers shouldn't be prosecuted atr all.

Have you seen what 7-11 charges for a bottle of aspirin?

The robber is just following their example, is all.

Most people who quit don't quit on their first try. That's just the way it is.

Roger that. It took me several fits and starts before it finally (seems to have) took.

Try to explain that to a non-user and they'll usually say you are justifying.

Drug users who are hopelessly addicted need help, not prison sentences.

Agreed, from a formerly-hopeless addict.

tasteless, classless

Who was the last MA politician for whom those two words did not apply? Surely there was someone since Coolidge that had taste and class.

solitas, you are wrong, vengeful and are going to have your fall someday.

I'm gonna have my fall when summer ends.

Oh wait. That's right. I'm in the South now. We don't have seasons.

No, people on this thread are intelligent enough to see a difference between someone who is in pain that becomes addicted to painkillers and someone who uses drugs recreational. Only an idiot wouldn't make that distinction.

Of course, the problem is that Rush is a Jew! Right. Another racist, anti-semitic pig joining the attempt to pile on Rush.

What, now the National Enquirer is golden?

Ever since they revealed the saga of Batboy.

If you want to help them have a shot at reintegrating into society, an unnecessary police record is not the answer!

He is a dope addict, pure and simple. He risked everything for dope. His freedom, reputation, health, and possibly lost his hearing. At this point he is no different than a street addict as far as addiction goes. If he thinks he is, he is toast.

Of course, the problem is that Rush is a Jew! Right. Another racist, anti-semitic pig joining the attempt to pile on Rush.

Here is my statement:

"Shortly you will find out that all Rush (a Jew) has to do to beat this is figure out which church he is going to handle snakes at! Run down the aisle and BOOM saved!"

If anything that statement is anti-Christian. Do you work with Jesse Jackson perchance? He can drag racist intent out of anything like you! DU may be more to your liking.

Irrelevant about where the crime happened. And don't tell me crack, coke, weed, and prescription drugs don't flow VERY freely in Hollywood. It's actually become chic to doctor shop and be on something!

Congratulations on being free of cocaine for nearly a year!

Can't wait until I get the glow-in-dark keytag.

NA rewards drug-free time with key tags of different colors. At first I was ashamed to have the key tag actually on my keys, cuz what if my employer saw that distinctive NA logo?

Then I realized: Those of them who knew that logo would understand and appreciate. Those who didn't would never even know.

LOL. Y'want some 'fall'? :) I'm not looking forward to the approx 25 cubic yards of (ground-up) leaves I'll be collecting (3'x3'x3' bag and blower on tractor) this fall.

Guess that makes Nov3 an idiot. Nov, you seem a nice person, but on this issue you are extremely stiff-necked.

I am too.

Addicts have to be stiff-necked about this stuff. Our sobriety depends on our honesty and our self-scrutiny.

If Rush doesn't get honest with himself -- that he is no better or worse than the rest of us addicts -- he won't stay clean. And then he will be toast.

The only perfect man to ever walk the earth was a Jewish carpenter 2,000 years ago

Great response Michael and thanks for the ping. This same Jewish carpenter also taught that only those who are completely without sin are permitted to cast stones at others. Certainly no one on this list or anywhere else on the planet meets that criteria. Then or now.

Our own President Bush admitted having difficulty with the substance alcohol and eliminated it from his life. Many many high profile and famous people have developed, admitted to and overcome addictions. Some never do like the late US President John F. Kennedy who's drug useage while in office is now common knowlege. (My, how the media protected certain presidents in those days!)

Treatment is the first step. Limbaugh will be in my prayers.

People are trying to dismiss this issue like Rush is different. Rush is not different. He is a drug addict. When I quit drinking I had to be serious about it. I hadn't suffered the extreme consequences others had even though I made a utter and complete mess of my life. Was I different than a gutter drunk? No! I was an alcoholic pure and simple. As bad as the gutter drunk. If I believed I was different, if I believed I was better than, had more control than, etc the end is almost certain. An alcoholic (or addict) must reach a bottom where they realize this or they must go to further extremes. Here is what I said:

He is a dope addict, pure and simple. He risked everything for dope. His freedom, reputation, health, and possibly lost his hearing. At this point he is no different than a street addict as far as addiction goes. If he thinks he is, he is toast.

It is true. Others here may have a problem with that but it is true. Drugs were worth more than Rush's values, reputation, freedom and he possibly lost his hearing to this addiction. That is junkie behavior whether you will admit it or not. Most people around here think alcoholics and addicts are bad people. MOST aren't. They have a horrible affliction. Rush has it.

You better hope he sees it that way. It is his only chance.

IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW HE GOT THERE, HE IS THERE.

Rush was allegedly buying them off the street, with no doctor oversight

What I meant was that the drugs are "clean", not tainted with impurities that might blow out a part of your neural circuit or otherwise poison the user.

There was a book published a few years back, "The Case of the Frozen Junkies." These dopers turned up stiff as boards, though alive. They found out later that they were fully conscious but could not move because their Substantia Nigra in their brain stem no longer manufactured dopamine, necessary for voluntary muscle movement. This was one of the first stem cell implant cases; stem cells were placed in the substantia nigra in hopes that dopamine production would come back.

Imagine the hell of being frozen, while fully awake. But that's what you risk with home-made drugs.

>>I no longer consider those who are addicted to be the lawbreakers--they have illnesses and can't stop themselves. The lawbreakers are those who provide the drugs. <<

Well at least we agree on something. I agree that addicts should not be treated as criminals, they should be treated as medical patients. If our laws allowed doctors to treat them per a medical model, the drug war would be largely over. Addicts consume a very large percentage of the illegal drugs consumed in this country. If they were taken out of the equation, it would deal a major blow to the drug underworld.

If you feel this way, then help us fight to get these laws changed. Join DRCNet or other organizations dedicated to changing these laws for the better.

Help minimize the damage that drugs do to us all.
