Mormon and Christian
Grig

Posted on 01/08/2011 6:43:59 PM PST by Grig

400 years ago Catholics looked on Protestantism as a cult of Christianity that lead people to hell, and looked on Protestants as not really being Christians. Clearly they've changed their minds a bit over the years on that.

In time, the same thing will happen with respect to Mormons IMHO. In fact it largely has already. While there are still some who speak of Mormons the same way that Catholics spoke of Protestants centuries ago, society in general recognizes The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as a Christian group.

For example:

Beliefnet.com lists Latter-Day Saints as a part of Christianity: http://www.beliefnet.com/Faiths/Christianity/Latter-Day-Saints/index.aspx

Wikipedia: "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (abbreviated as the LDS Church, and colloquially referred to as the Mormon Church) is a restorationist Christian religion" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Church_of_Jesus_Christ_of_Latter-day_Saints

Likewise the definition of 'Christian' at dictionary.com doesn't require adherence to orthodox dogma. Nor am I aware of any reputable dictionary or encyclopedia that says otherwise.

Here on FR when you go to post to the Religion forum you have the option of checking off what denomination(s) the post applies to. In there it lists the category of "Other Christian" as being specifically for "7th Day Adventist, Churches of God, Messianic Christians, Unitarian, LDS, etc."

This of course is separate from the question of what set of teachings is actually correct. Christ taught that not all who lay claim to his name will have a legitimate claim, and in the end He will be the judge. That's fine with me.

“protestantism leads to atheism.” I’m paraphrasing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In europe it appears to be true for the last 50 years anyway.
The LDS does not consider Baptists/Presbyterians/Methodists/Catholics/Pentecostals to be Mormons. Why should Christianity consider LDS to be Christian?
I like your screen name. I read what you wrote about it on your profile. Very good and very apt!
No, I’m just a straight Bible-believing Christian, no denomination. All I have is what is written in the Bible, with no man-made “extras” to pervert the meaning.
It’s very educational to look at Western Europe versus Poland. Catholic Poland still has its faith, protestant W Europe is largely atheist. Maybe Poland will send missionaries to its neighbors.
French are catholic though. They aren’t hanging on to their religion too good. So that means there’s more to the atheism spread than just protestantism.
Organized religion is a bit confusing.
Jesus was a man.
Now he is God.
Works for Him.
But it won’t work for me.
People were created to be what?
Lapdogs?
Put a person on an altar and cut their heart out to make some god happy.
Bad, Bad, Bad.
Torture and kill a person by crucifixion to make God happy.
Good. Good. Good.
Cannibalism is bad, bad, bad.
Consuming the flesh and blood of Jesus is good, good, good.
I’m sure glad there are people out there who understand the concepts of eternity and infinity.
And the Will of God.
I sure don’t.
But I try.
You heard wrong.
What got into a mess was a post with a headline that Smith is the 13th Appostle. Jim made it “breaking news.” When the poster got all victim about it, Jim said it is not okay to promote that nonsense on Free Republic.
Given Jim is not a Morom maybe revising Christianity with that nutty headline news was a tad radical? You couldn’t have just been happy talking amongst yourselves about your 13th appostle - the poster had to make it headline news on Jim’s website?
How about I go to a Mormon website and make a headline - Joseph Smith is a lying SOB... How would that go over? We have much we agree on - Mormons and Christians on Free Republic and there is no need to come on here headlining the thorn - Joseph Smith’s god status. I love the Mormons on Free Republic.
I won’t mention Romney...
I still cannot figure out why these apologists keep trying to claim they are the proper Christians after all the decades their leadership didn't want to be called Christains. ... Sure smells like stealth Romney prep of conservatives, preparing to dismantle the Christian conservative opposition to the rino Romney. I mean, what fool would claim to be The Christians when they believe jesus was sired in a 'pre-existence' by the union of the mormon god and goddess who were once merely men and women who had to earn godhood and be appointed god and goddess over earth?
Deadhead, Jesus was always God, if you happen to believe the Bible. Try reading John chapter one then get back to us with your favorite heresies.
That’s sad.
Jesus always was, and still is, God. That’s a truth you’re missing by a mile. Why Jesus gave His life for us is another truth you’re missing by a mile. We were not created to be “lapdogs,” another concept you miss by a mile. The blood of Jesus? We don’t actually consume it physically, but it covers those of us who trust Him nonetheless.
You say you “try” to understand. If you really wanted to know the truth, you would. I hope one day you do.
You have a good point and I acknowledge it. What to do with the French? Maybe they’re just hopeless.
I visited Poland in October 2010 (I’m half Polish), and I thought to myself, the Poles have survived the brutality of the Nazis and the Soviets. I worry more about them now that they have “prosperity”. I think they’ll lose their faith, my 100% Polish Catholic mother laughs at that. I hope she’s right.
You claim that you try to understand Christianity and yet your description of it is utterly false and wrongheaded.
I don’t think that you have really tried.
I totally agree with post #9; and also what I write below are not my words, but summarized from God’s words. I am a Christian evangelist in the same way as the Apostle Paul (but Paul is greater than I: but I like Paul do not lie about the Bible doctrines).
To start with, God clearly tells us that Christians are those who are named inside the book of life: whose names are written in the book of life (Philipians 4:3).
God Word clearly communicates to us Christians that in these last days, deception will be widespread, and MOST people will be deceived by doctrines of demons and Satan: forbidding men to marry, forbidding the freedom to eat meats on certain days of the week, observing certain days as holy-days which were not specified in the Bible...etc...
And clearly the Word of God demonstrates that there is ONLY ONE GOD: Mormonism believe that there are many gods and claim that individual Mormons become gods - this not Christianity
And the belief in Purgatory, veneration of dead saints, neither is Christianity: there is ONLY TWO DOMAINS - Heaven and Hell - and Christ Jesus is the ONLY Mediator between God and Man and Christ Jesus is the HEAD of the invisible Church (Colossians 1:18).
Islam rejects Christ Jesus and continues to persecute the true Church of GOD: Christians. Islam also contineues to teach false statement about the ONLY TRUE Prophet: Christ Jesus; who is the FINAL prophet and is ONE with God Almighty and the only Savior.
All these false religions are the result of the single handedness of ONE of worlds greatest deceivers: Satan - the Devil - Liar from the Beginning.
Satan has been very successful in creating false “religions” to deceive billions of people. Those that follow false "religions" risk the pit of hell by God's righteous judgment.
The Word of God is clear in communicating that only a remnant of people will be faithful to the doctrines of the Bible and not add false doctrines, nor take away words from the Bible (Rev 22:19), nor add words to the Bible (Proverbs 30:6, Rev 22:18), nor change the words of the Bible.
The faithful Christians are those who are of the faith OF Christ (Romans 3:22, Galatians 2:16, Philippians 3:9), and these know that God calls each and every Christian believer before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). Even in the Book of Revelation God clearly says that the Christians that believe in Christ via the faith OF Christ have their names written in the BOOK OF LIFE of the LAMB: Revelation 3:5, 13:8, 17:9, 20:15, 21:27.
Oh, I get it all right. I got it a long time ago.
Some hang to the left.
Some hang to the right.
Some hang in the middle.
It is sad.
Ah, but they don’t, you see. Not now. Nothing can.
Place an image in your mind of an event at Golgotha roughly 2,000 years ago.
3 people were “hung” up on crosses.
One to the left.
One to the right.
One in the middle.
Read my tagline.
Think about it.
Um, actually, it is likely that five were crucified that day. I can give you a link to learn about the particulars, if you’re actually interested.
