Tomb of Apostle Philip Found
Bible History Daily ^ | 1/4/12

Amid the remains of a fourth or fifth century church at Hierapolis, one of the most significant Christian sites in Turkey, Francesco D’Andria found this first-century Roman tomb that he believes once held the remains of the apostle Philip.

At about the same time as the July/August 2011 issue of Biblical Archaeology Review was hitting the newsstands, containing an article about St. Philip’s Martyrium,* author and excavation director Francesco D’Andria was making an exciting new discovery in the field at Hierapolis, one of the most significant sites in Christian Turkey. A month later he announced it: They had finally found the tomb of the martyred apostle Philip.

The tomb wasn’t discovered at the center of the octagonal hilltop martyrium as long expected, however, but in a newly excavated church about 40 yards away. D’Andria’s team found a first-century Roman tomb located at the center of the new church, which he says originally contained Philip’s remains. This early church of Christian Turkey was built around the tomb in the fourth or fifth century, and the nearby martyrium was built around the same time, in the early fifth century.

That’s really cool if true.

Just grab Philip’s skull and ask him.

If he says, “yes”, run.

The article said the tomb “once held Phillip’s remains.” I took that to mean there aren’t even any remains in the tomb at present. So that makes it hard for me to figure how they knew Phil’s old dry bones were once in that hole.

These guys have to find something to justify their big fat paychecks.

So they found an empty tomb and speculated that it was Phil's final residence?? Good grief!! What a bunch of scam artists.

Poorly written article; there’s probably an inscription or carvings of some kind.

Having said that.......and while I’m a fervent believer, I’m always just a bit skeptical about these type finds. I mean, really, what are the odds? But......we can hope.

They probably knew a church had been built around his tomb from ancient writings. The problem was that they had searched the domed church and found no tomb in its center. Recently they found the other church and discovered the tomb in its center. Hence, since the coin showed two churches, and only one of them had a tomb in its center, the deduction was that this was the original resting place for Saint Phillip.

Previous discovered writings stated that his remains had been moved.

Not what are the odds....What is the point??

Rest in Peace is supposed to mean something.

Disturbing gravesites is just soooooo wrong.

Science?? Or money??

Much speculation, little evidence.

Or just plain archeological curiosity I suppose. Everyone’s hoping to find something definitive.

Just Phil? Shouldn't that be "Mister Phil" or "Saint Phil" or something? ;') Thanks Kenny Bunk. It's amusing and bemusing that some people haven't read the actual topic post, in which it notes that this *used to* contain his remains, and doesn't now.

Just adding to the catalog, not sending a general distribution.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.
