I invite the reader to refer to the original PDF for the accurate rendering of the Coptic and Greek characters.

I apologize for posting what is a scientific paper on an arcane subject here. However, given the publicity that the recent discovery of the purported reference to Jesus' wife received, I choose not to wait till the popular media picks up the analysis of the nature of the discovery.

And now we know the mechanics of the set-up.

Isn’t there a warning in the Old Testament about people making up their own gods to suit themselves? And a commandment of some sort?

In the first reports of this 'discovery', the woman made it very clear that this fragment did NOT confirm the existence of a wife for Jesus. She stated clearly that it was a fragment of a larger piece that should not be taken out of context to fit a lager agenda.

Has this part of the story been cast by the wayside now?

So, what the author is saying is that based on a purely linguistic analysis of language and content the fragment is probably a modern forgery. Given that this Harvard professor can give absolutely no provenance for the fragment the probability that this is a fake goes off the charts.

I don’t think this “discovery” was made in order to make up a more suitable Jesus, but rather to obfuscate the knowledge of the real One.

What you are talking about is not a “part of the story” but rather points to the fact that Karen King is a reasonable human being.

The author makes a mention of her disclaimers in the first paragraph of the article, so obviously he is not casting anything by the wayside.

“This is most probably the compositional procedure of a modern author who is not a native speaker of Coptic.”

I don’t understand what is the big deal if Jesus had a wife or not it. He is a Jewish man. Jewish men get married. I don’t see how any of that would change His life or Him being the Redeemer.

There is both truth and falsehood in the world, being as accurate as possible and being satisfied with ‘so what?’.

Since Jesus said his Father must be worshiped ‘in spirit and truth’ then it would follow knowing the truth of the matter is of importance. A married Jesus with the possibility of a family is a different Jesus than one who had no place to lay down his head and no attachments to this world.

I believe Prof. King thinks the text was originally written in Greek and later translated into Coptic. If the author was a Gnostic living in Egypt in the second century, he or she might have imitated other Gnostic texts so having similarities to other Gnostic writings would not necessarily show that it is a modern forgery.

Would there be a way to determine the age of the ink without destroying the papyrus?

I don’t think this “discovery” was made in order to make up a more suitable Jesus, but rather to obfuscate the knowledge of the real One.

Actually, they are attempting to do both. They need a homosexual Jesus, a whore-mongering Jesus. They need him to be a married liar. They need a Jesus who says one thing and does another. All to justify their own sins. In the process of creating their own personal Jesus they work to make the Real One look like a chump. It's a two-fer.

Most men indeed get married, but then most men do not die for the redemption of mankind and succeed, and rise up to sit at the right hand of God the Father. So you cannot argue about Jesus from what commonly was done.

Further, celibacy is an important aspect of Christianity. Consider:

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple ... likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:26,33)

[7]...For I would that all men were even as myself: but every one hath his proper gift from God; one after this manner, and another after that. [8] But I say to the unmarried, and to the widows: It is good for them if they so continue, even as I. [9] But if they do not contain themselves, let them marry. (1 Cor.7:7-9)

It would be inconsistent if the Author of the speech written down by st. Luke, and the teacher of St. Paul who was celibate by conviction and advised celibacy to others, be Himself married.
