Last year the History Channel featured the epic television event, “The Bible Series,” which was produced by Roma Downey and her husband Mark Burnett. This show captivated audiences and became the talk of many churches. Churches even purchased pre-written sermons to go along with the show, which according to outreach.com made it into 180,000 churches.

Roma and Mark were endlessly interviewed in Christian magazines, and on Christian radio. All along saying that they were sold out Christians and believers filled with the Holy Spirit.

And the churches bought it. They promoted it...

I pray the movie does extremely well - for the hearers of course and - for those who have great knowledge of Scripture to see the hunger is there - for the Christian conservatives to see their strength - and for Hollywood to realize that there is money to be made from Christian films.

Since John was a specific type of Jew like Samson, he never cut his hair, and wore camel hair robes. He probably looked worse that this photo shows him.

I found a lot of errors in the original movie that did not match my KJV.

The Bible is full of violence we all know that. Caused by greed, turning from GOD etc.

I'd be more worried about the violent commercials and lead ins.

Cyrene is in present-day Libya. It was founded by the Greeks, later ruled by Egypt and then the Romans. Simon of Cyrene’s race and/or ethnicity are unknown, so quite frankly whether he is portrayed by a black man or any other man is irrelevant.

Have you seen the movie?

No I have not. I have only seen the bits and pieces in promos and several interviews. I never go to movies. No particular reason other than I have other hobbies and enough to keep me busy.

What difference would that make re my comments?

Mar 9:38 John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone using Your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he wasn’t in our group.”
Mar 9:39 “Don’t stop him!” Jesus said. “No one who performs a miracle in My name will soon be able to speak evil of Me.
Mar 9:40 Anyone who is not against us is for us.

Would the lesson from above be that as long as His name is being spoken, God can use that? Yes, may not be the total truth but then we don’t have that either, do we? Something about fuzzy images in a mirror?

I’ll just read the book.... again. In the midwest here -— was watching church closings last night and as I mentioned to Mr. Mercat - no closing of any Catholic Churches. Not to raise any hackles but why do Lutherans close up? Episcopalians? Don’t they also believe that they have the real presence? Just asking. Going to Mass at 10:30. I don’t expect a crowd. I’m guessing most people crowded into last night’s service.

Most, if not all, Protestant churches emphasize the sermon as the most important part of a Sunday service. No audience renders a sermon pointless.

Taking a cue from Jews, Catholics emphasize offering a public ritual without regard to how many are there. Definitely a strength of Catholicism.

“I would suggest we look for opportunities to use this film for witness rather than condemnation.”

How would you know how to use the film to personally witness to someone if you hadn’t seen it. Just asking. . . The movie itself was void of the true salvation message. You will have to fill in the blanks for your unsaved friends.

What are we doing here in this forum? Other than condemn the movie how about we simply tell the lurkers that Christ paid the full price for our sins and by simply relying on Him alone for our salvation we can be assured of eternity with Him? Do we need to see the movie to be able to do that? Do we need to see the movie to discuss salvation through Jesus with someone who has seen the movie and talks about it? Do we have to see the movie to know it’s out there when someone mentions it in conversation?

What? A muti-media presentation with orchestra and chorus isn’t a commandment?

Just stop - you don't need to school ME on scripture.

Indeed I don't; but there may be lurkers who need to understand that lack of a clear call to repentance and salvation in a so-called 'christian' movie, could tend to convince the unlearned that it is not that important.

If you don't understand the need for Christians to extend a little grace and mercy instead of starting out in ATTACK mode, then I feel badly for you, Elsie.

It seems strange to me that some would consider that an emphasis on CORRECT teaching is somehow an ATTACK.

Salt Lake City seems to have figgered it out.

True; but no matter WHICH race was used to portray him, Someone would get upset!!!
