Good for the government they intended to govern, more than can be said about our current mess.

Great article. Thank you for posting it.

Over the last 20 to 50 years some good history has been written on what really happened during those years in England. Relying mostly on state records a picture has emerged which contradicts the common opinion.

For example, the civilized world was absolutely shocked when Henry VIII had Thomas More, John Fisher and the Carthusian monks executed. They were known to be innocent and holy men. For anyone to say anything or write anything contrary to the king, or Elizabeth meant they would be accused of high treason. So everyone got to be quite mum about stuff. That is the reason why Shakespeare seems to be so mysterious.

But out of the morass emerged the people who fought for the truth - Catholics and Protestant alike - and they paid the price for their opinions.

I have read the true descriptions of the executions from the witnesses and it is amazing that anyone would continue to fight after seeing a hanging, drawing and quartering preceded by an emasculation done on a fully conscious person.

And yet the Catholic Popes and others in authority murdered millions of protestants for believing in the Bible as the final authority.

See the Huguenots.

At that time the Catholic church was as violent against the Protestants. Both sides were busy fighting religious wars.

And yet, Protestant ENGLAND went on to become the major power in the world as Catholic SPAIN melted away slowly, slowly. Then it was Catholic France which began to melt away quickly after their secular revolution.

“On the eve of the Reformation, there is no doubt there were small groups in England pressing for reforms. Then, as now, such perspectives were nothing new - John Wycliffe, the Oxford theologian, had been a prominent advocate for radical reforms two centuries earlier.”

Would that be the John Wycliffe whose remains were dug up, burned, and the ashes cast into the river Swift at the command of Pope Martin V?

This might be worth your time to listen to: ITunes U, Westminster Seminary, Carl Trueman, The Reformation.

Upshot, yes, the English Reformation was a mess.
