The Enfield school board says it voted to hold services June 23 and 24 at The First Cathedral in Bloomfield because it had enough space at the right price. But two students and three of their parents sued. The judge says Enfield had unconstitutionally entangled itself with religion by agreeing to cover much of the church's religious imagery. She also says the town coerced the plaintiffs to support religion by forcing them to enter the church for graduation.

When President O'Donnell asked me to give this address, I expressed one concern: "Will there be a protest? And will you prosecute the protestors? Or at least 88 of them?" He made no commitment. I accepted anyway. So what can I tell you? This is a time of crises. The economy is a mess, the culture is a mess, the government is out of control. And, in the last three years, Notre Dame lost 21 football games. But this is a great time for us to be here, especially you graduates of this superbly Catholic college. This is so because...

The Drudge Report has a teaser headline about the very reserved response Barack Obama got from the 2010 graduating class at West Point yesterday:Tepid applause from cadets: Cuts 'That's a lot of cheering' line from prepared remarks...Here is the prepared version followed by the transcript of the passage noted by Drudge:To the United States Corps of Cadets, and most of all, the Class of 2010 – it is an honor to serve as your Commander-in-Chief. Under our constitutional system, my power as President is wisely limited. But there are some areas where my power is absolute. And so, as your...

Glenn Beck is a darling of Fox News viewers and a must-see for legions of religious conservatives. So given his profile and right-of-center views, it was no surprise when it was announced that Beck would be a featured speaker at this Sunday's commencement at Baptist-run Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., the brainchild of the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, founder of the Moral Majority. Falwell's son, Jerry Jr., is the current president of Liberty. In a statement explaining the invitation, he called Beck "one of the few courageous voices in the national media standing up for the principles upon which this...

CampusReform.org released a list this month revealing a strong liberal bias among undergraduate universities’ commencement speakers. The data shows that for every four liberal commencement speakers this spring, there is one conservative speaker. The study looked at 160 universities. Liberal names on the speaking list include Vice President Al Gore, President Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama, Alec Baldwin, Nancy Pelosi, Sonia Sotomayor, Rachel Maddow, David Brooks and First Lady Michelle Obama. “With the Obama administration being in power, obviously more high government officials are liberal,” CampusReform.org Communications Director Bonnie Kristian said. “Yet there are an abundance of conservative and libertarian...

Fox News commentator Glenn Beck will deliver the commencement address at Liberty University's May 15 graduation. “Beck is one of the few courageous voices in the national media standing up for the principles upon which this nation was founded,” Jerry Falwell Jr., chancellor of Liberty University, said in the school newspaper's story. The baccalaureate address will be delivered by Paige Patterson, president of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, whom Falwell called one of the “patriarchs of Christian higher education." SNIP In 2008, Focus on the Family pulled an interview with Beck over concerns with his Mormon faith. Christianity Today did...

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A central Indiana district isn't calling off a planned high school graduation prayer unless a federal judge orders it. Greenwood School Board president Joe Farley says the district wants the judge to decide the merits of a lawsuit filed by the school's top-ranked senior. Greenwood High School student Eric Workman is asking a federal judge to stop a student-led prayer that the senior class voted to approve. The lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana on the 18-year-old's behalf claims that the prayer and class vote unconstitutionally subject students to religious practice.

"I've come to you this morning with a topic that probably in an earlier age would have sounded a little bit absurd. And that’s the question of whether character matters, whether it has anything to do with public service. Now even as recently as a generation ago, probably no one would give a commencement talk on that address to educated people -- people getting their degree -- because education was considered to be not only the acquisition of knowledge, but the formation of moral character. That’s what education was all about." ..."Twenty-five years ago this summer, I was converted to...
