On the day of July 8, 1838 -- 175 years ago tomorrow -- the original "prophet" of the Church of Mormon, Joseph Smith, made up four "revelations" from the Mormon god: These are recorded in Doctrine & Covenants (numbers 117, 118, 119, & 120). Let's look at some of the verses in these: 117:12: I say unto you, I remember my servant Oliver Granger; behold, verily I say unto him that his name shall be had in sacred remembrance from generation to generation, forever and ever, saith the Lord."Of course, you all know Oliver Granger, right? ....Uh, right? Well, surely,...

And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads… And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden...

WASHINGTON, Feb. 22, 2011 – Somali pirates killed all four Americans they had held hostage aboard a sailing vessel in the Indian Ocean this morning, U.S. Central Command officials announced. U.S. officials were negotiating with the pirates for the safe return of the captured Americans when the murders took place, officials said. Centcom officials said that in the midst of negotiations, U.S. forces responded to gunfire aboard the S/V Quest. When the forces reached the boat, officials said, they discovered all four hostages had been shot by their captors. Despite immediate steps to provide life-saving care, all four hostages ultimately...

In last night’s Athletics-Indians game, the A’s trailed by one run with two outs in the ninth inning. Up came shortstop Adam Rosales to face Indians closer Chris Perez. On a 1-1 pitch, Rosales blasted a 93 mile per hour fastball to left center field for a game tying home run. Only the umps didn’t see it that way. They ruled the ball had hit the outfield wall, giving Rosales a double. After a brief protest from A’s manager Bob Melvin, the umpire crew headed for the replay room to make sure of their call. Replays definitively showed the ball...

We have already followed the development of God estranged humanity, through the line of Cain. The primary characteristics of that part of Adam’s family, was the attempt to mitigate the Curse of God ,without repentance; by means of the development of agriculture, animal husbandry, metallurgy and of music and the arts . In spite of the remarkably swift cultural, agricultural and technological advances in Cain’s seed, we see also the steady spiritual and moral disintegration of marriage, the family, and human culture in the brief view given in Genesis 4. Lamech boasts to his two wives, in the first recorded...

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth: And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred...

In the hours and days following the Newtown massacre, the media reported a metric sh*tload of what were later discovered to be incorrect details, including the identity of the shooter, his mom's connection to the school, where she was killed, how Adam Lanza got into the building, and the weapons he used. Now we can add another one to the list: Adam Lanza was not wearing body armor, but "a fishing type vest, a jacket with a lot of pockets," according to a Connecticut state police spokesman.

During a special cameo appearance at the 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief, comedian Adam Sandler paid tribute to the resilience of the NY/NJ metropolitan residents affected by Hurricane Sandy. Set to the tune of Leonard Cohen‘s oft-covered classic “Hallelujah,” Sandler and David Letterman‘s long-time sidekick Paul Shaffer performed a parody titled “Sandy, Screw Ya!” Name-dropping every famous New Yorker under the sun from Mayor Michael Bloomberg to Alex Rodriguez to Donald Trump‘s combover, the lyrics were as follows: “The terror of the hurricane / The unforgiving wind and rain / New York, the world held its breath as the storm...

Adam Carolla wants to set the record straight. The broadcaster who once boastfully told "Loveline" listeners he was "literally" a millionaire isn't rich. He's successful. There's a difference, and it's one lost in the current debate over Democrats trying to increase taxes on the wealthiest Americans. Carolla shared his thoughts on the matter with "The O'Reilly Factor" viewers last night.

STERLING, Va. (AP) - A senior Pentagon official is apologizing to Washington-area Muslims for the burning of Qurans at a military base in Afghanistan. Peter Lavoy, acting assistant secretary of defense for Asia and Pacific security affairs, says the military is investigating and that all troops are being retrained in the handling of religious materials. Lavoy's remarks were Friday at a mosque in suburban Washington, D.C. They come after protests across Afghanistan over the burning of several Qurans at a U.S. military base. Military officials say 20 people have died in the protests, including two U.S. soldiers.

In recent years, several self-proclaimed evangelicals, or those associated with evangelical institutions, have called into question the historicity of Adam and Eve. It is said that because of genomic research we can no longer believe in a first man called Adam from whom the entire human race has descended. I'll point to some books at the end which deal with the science end of the question, but the most important question is what does the Bible teach. Without detailing a complete answer to that question, let me suggest ten reasons why we should believe that Adam was a true historical...

Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. (Genesis 3:21)Remember that when Adam and Eve sinned they immediately perceived that they were naked? The nakedness of our first father and mother was a spiritual condition as well as a physical one. Now that they had broken away from God, they deeply sensed that they were vulnerable , uncovered, and exposed as sinful beings in the presence of holiness. This sense of nakedness has passed down unto all of the children of Adam. All of us feel the need for some...

And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.(Genesis 3:20)Genesis three is a primal chapter of scripture. It is essential to any true understanding of the plight of man, death in the world, the nature of sin, Satan’s wiles, and most importantly, God’s salvation. Every detail of this foundational chapter is set in place by the Holy Spirit of God, that we might benefit by this unique revelation of why the world is as it is. Therefore the naming of Eve, who up to this point is referred to as “Ishah”, (the woman), is...

Bar Vanunu, Mayor of the Binyamin community of Adam, formerly known as Geva Binyamin and situated 4 kilometers northeast of Jerusalem, told Arutz Sheva the decision to allow Arabs to work land at the entrance to the community is "outrageous." "This is very disturbing to the residents and presents a security hazard," Vanunu said. "It is a plot by the left to steal our land on behalf of the Arabs. Not to be immodest, but if I had been mayor three years ago, this never would have happened." According to Vanunu, the Civil Administration sends soldiers with the Arabs every...

And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and...

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.(Genesis 3:15)The gloom of judgment and wrath at the sinners in the garden, has been penetrated by this mysterious pronouncement of God, addressed to the serpent, and not to the guilty man and woman who had already refused accountability to God. Adam and Eve overhear in the sentence passed upon the serpent, the possibility of a reversal. Evidently even in judgment, the Lord remembers mercy to the fallen couple, for the woman shall...

And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the...

For the last several months there has been a flurry of discussion—mostly online, of course—about the impossibility of a literal Adam & Eve (see, e.g., here and here and here). This ruling-out has been accomplished recently by the Human Genome Project, which indicates that anatomically modern humans emerged from primate ancestors about 100,000 years ago, from a population of something like 10,000. In short, science has confirmed what many of us already knew: there was not a literal first couple. So what else can we learn from this story? Plenty, it turns out. Peter Enns, a biblical scholar who blogs...

And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. (Genesis 3:7-8)Immediately after they transgressed, we are told that Adam and Eve became painfully aware of it. Their eyes were indeed opened, but not in the way that they had expected. Upon acting out their rejection...
